HI Dis friends, :flower:

I'm a wee concerned about my 3.5 son. He's 38" tall, 3 years and 9 months and has only grown 1/3 of an inch in about 8 months.

He's many friends are younger and taller than him.

My other son was in the 95 percentile and very tall.

I may want to call the doctor about this.

Any input, I appreciate.

Thanks.

My dd who is 3 years and 10 months is exactly 3 feet tall, as is her "little" brother who is 2 years and 3 months. Are you or your child's other parent short? I mentioned my dd's height and the pediatrician told me that it's nothing to worry about for my dd because I'm small and she's getting it from me.;)

My DS is 3yr 8mos and he is 43". He has always been 95% or higher. DH and I are tall too, as well as our girls.

If he's in the "normal" range, even if it's only the 5th percentile for his age/sex, then I wouldn't worry at all.

Our oldest son, who is now 6.5 years old, is now right in the 50th percentile for his age/sex, but from birth until he turned 5, he was in the 5th percentile for height and weight. He was soooooo small! And I mean SMALL! When he was 3 years old, he wore 24 month or 2T sizes. When he was 4, he wore 3T. AND, his dad is 6'5" tall!

Finally, in kindergarten at age 5.5 he started a growth spurt, which he's still experiencing (playing catch up I guess) and now he's right in the middle. Some kids are taller than him, some shorter. He looks like your typical 1st grader. We thought he'd be the littlest guy forever, but I guess he was just a late bloomer. :flower:

On the flip side of the coin, our youngest son, who's 2.5 years old, is in the 95th percentile in height and weight. He's a big guy and TALL. He wears shirts that his older brother was wearing last year in kindergarten! :earseek:
I'm assuming that he'll slow down in growth before too long, because otherwise he's going to be a 5ft tall kindergartener! :rotfl:

:goodvibes My dd is 3 years and 5 months and is only 36-37 inches tall. She's always been small/short though - in the 5th percentile - and I am short as well.

disney-super-mom, my dd is still wearing 24 m/2T stuff although some of it is starting to get too small now. I have been buying 3T tops for her this winter figuring I'd rather them be a little big, but the pants I still need 2T. The 3T pants are just too long! Maybe my dd will have a growth spurt later on too!

OP - I don't think I'd worry at all about him. What percentile was he on when he was younger? Kids just don't grow much very quickly after they are 2 I think. :goodvibes

I wouldn't worry. My DD is 28 mo and is only 32". She doesn't make any height or weight curve but the slope of her "special" curves matches those of more typical kids. We have spoken to our pediatrician at length and he just thinks she is petite. I would call your pediatrician though, since some metabolic disorders or other problems may cause growth issues.

my DS is 3 yrs 9 months and is 38" tall. He's my last one so I dont mind him staying little for me. :earsboy: I'm sure one day he will shoot up.

I wouldn't be concerned about his height right now, but I'd be sure to note his growth from his 3 year checkup to his 4 year checkup. Bring it to the attention of the doctor and get his/her advice as to whether it is adequate growth or not.

He is probably fine. IMO, any parental concern is a valid one and should be discussed with the pediatrician. More than likely, your ped. will just reassure you that it's all good :flower:

My DD is 3 yr 10 months and is 41 or 42" tall. She has always been in the 95% until last year when she dropped down to th 80th. But my neice is 5 and 2 months and is just barely 40" Actually she may be only 39 1/2". Everyone always thinks my DD is older and she always corrects them that her cousin is bigger but she is 5!!!!!!

My DD is almost 5 years old ( she will turn 5 in March) and she is about 37 inches tall and weighs about 26 lbs. The ped. has always told us that as long as she is developmentally on target the height and weight is not a concern but if she sees her having problems hitting her targets as far as development she will take the next step. So I would say as long as he is developmentally doing well I would not worry but it never hurts to ask at your next appointment.

Hi,

I would not worry to much. All children are different. My dd is 3 yrs and 2 1/2 months. She is 39" and 40lbs. Last year she was really little ( had only grown 1/2" in 6 months, then she shot up over night) Now she is getting on the heavy side- with out getting taller. The pedi told me that her body is storing fat, then she will grow agian.

So, my dd gets chunky..(LOL Love my chunky baby). Then she grows three inches or so.

Don't worry! We've gone the whole endocrinologist route with our dd because when we switched dr's, they were "concerned". She is not on the chart. She turned 9 in Sept and we just had her wellness appt on 1/3 and here are her stats - she is 47 1/4 inches tall and weighs 53 lbs - but that is all muscle. She is a competitive gymnast, so actually her height is an advantage for her. The endocrinologist basically said that she is healthy - she has genetic short stature - you come from short parents, you will probably end up short. She will be happy if dd reaches 5 ft, but could possibly end up shorter than that. She also said that the most important thing is to make sure that her self-esteem is high, don't let her height get her self-esteem down. Being a gymnast has certainly improved her self-esteem. Her size has also helped by pocket book. She can wear clothes for years - literally. She has about a size 5 waist, but needs size 6 length, so we tuck the waist and her shoe size is now a whopping size 12. My problem now is finding clothes and shoes that appeal to her age and not to someone who is 4. We are beyond princesses and anything "baby/toddler" girl looking. I keep telling her she will be envied as a teenager with her tiny little body!

My daughter is 3 yrs and 8 months and she's 40 inches and 30 lbs. I don't think I'd worry yet about you DS's height, but bring it up at his next appt. He might surprise you and have a growth spurt soon, so watch how his pants fit.

My daughter must have grown overnight because her pants are highwater now. Time to go shopping and buy some 3T's as her 2T's are too short. LOL!

DD is 3 1/2 and 34", 26 lbs. She is on the small side, but has always been so. The ped is not concerned since she is steady in being 5-10 percentile. Now one of my other dd's is 7yrs 7 mos old, and is 44" tall. At the most. She is still in sz 5 clothes. She is almost always below the growth chart (just barely) although she sometimes creeps to about 3rd percentile. If your child has always been low on the percentile charts, this might be "normal" for him. Talk to the ped when you see them. They can plot his growth and check the pattern.

We we at WDW in November. Our son was 3 years 6 months when were were there. He was 39 inches, which made him one inch short for a good number of rides he desparately wanted to go on. He and his two sisters were all about the same height at that age. I don't think you have too much to worry about but for YOUR piece of mind you might want to consult your family doctor.

My 3 1/2 year old son is 44'' tall and about 47 lbs. He's a big boy, but not fat in any way. I am 5'8 and my hubby is 6'4 so that's why he is so tall. I wouldn't worry about your son though--as long as he is acting healthy and eating fine. Everyone is different :)
