How strict are they? Teen eat a kids menu item?

I have a dd who will be 13 on our trip. She is a very picky eater and won't eat most of the adult items on the dinner menus. For instance, at WCC there is not a hamburger on the adult dinner menu but there is one on the kids menu. Can teens order something from the kids menu...I would be willing to pay more for that item if necessary. We won't be on the Dining Plan.
Thanks!

If you are not on the DDP can they tell what you can eat?
Thanks

I'm an adult and I've ordered off the kids menu at several WDW TS restaurants without a problem. As long as you ask nicely they will most likely let her order whatever she wants.

My 13 year old daughter is the same way...last March they pretty much let her order off the kids menu when ever she wanted.

My 18yo ordered off the kid's menu in March at Coral Reef and a couple of other places. No problem.

Glad to see they've relaxed this! DS and I last went right after they changed the age for kids' menus and we were told he could not have the kids' menu (he was 11) at three different restaurants. He didn't really care, but he wasn't in the growth spurts he is now, so I felt like I had wasted money (and more importantly, food) on those occasions.

Why exactly would they care? I mean, they are giving a smaller portion, so it should be cheaper no? Also, why would it matter if it was DDP or not? Is there anywhere it says that adults HAVE to order off the adult menu? All it says is kids have to.. I've just never understood the big deal with ordering off the kids meal if it has something you like on it. Heck I'm picky, and I have to do that sometimes so my wife can go somewhere wierd and eat together.

Now if I ordered off the kids meal then complained about the serving size I got or something like that, then that's an issue..

I'm just confused on what the big deal is..:confused3

From the responses, it isn't a big deal.

Yea, true on this thread sorry. Will have to dig up another thread if I can where it wasnt so positive..

Or heck, maybe I was confused and it was folks buying an adult DDP for their 5 year old and ordering off the adult menu for them.

There was one of them recently that confused me..

Just ignore me this AM must still have cobwebs in the brain from not being awake so long yet :)

I've seen some people get nasty about it here for some reason... and I don't get it. I'm an adult and I do order off of the kids meal now and then at sit downs as well as counter service. I've been doing this all my life (been going to WDW since I was 5) and never had a problem. I just nicely ask "Is it possible for me to order off of the kids meal?" and sometimes I'll just say "I'm not too hungry" or the like, but not always. No one has told me no yet.

Believe it or not this also works at almost all the chain restaurants we have here as well (Applebee's, TGIFridays, Brio etc).

Thanks for all of the positive responses! I was thinking I would have to limit our meals to places with the traditional items (burgers, chicken fingers, etc) just to please the dd13. Glad to hear we can be more flexible!

A couple of thoughts ---

(1) Just because an item isn't on the adult menu doesn't mean that it cannot be prepared. Particularly something like a hamburger, which is probably on the lunch menu. So, look at the lunch menu as well. If it's on the lunch menu, then it is probably in the kitchen. All you have to say is, "I'd like a hamburger, if that's possible, please." My son (age 20, and picky) does that quite often both here at home and at Disney.

(2) If there's something on the kid's menu that she wants, just ask. If they say that she can't order from the kid's menu, then I'd suggest saying something like, "May I please have an adult portion of chicken nuggets?"

My experience and observation with Disney TS restaurants is that the chefs and kitchens are flexible -- the printed menus are not set in stone. If they have it in the kitchen, then they are probably willing to prepare it for you, and they will work up the appropriate price. However, if I request something off-menu, then I am prepared to pay what they say. If they won't let us order from the kid's menu at the kid's price, then that is their prerogative.
