How soon before our trip do I need to customize our MBs?

Our trip is in July and we (my family of 10) have not customized our Magic Bands. How soon do they need to be customized before Disney issues us the dreaded gray bands?

Reportedly:
If you customize them more than 30 days prior to check-in, they will ship at 30 days.
If you customize them less than 30 days prior, but more than 10, they will ship shortly after you customize them.
If you customize them less than 10 days, but more than 5, they will ship to the resort.
Less than 5 days, you will receive un-customized (no names) grey bands at check-in.

Shipping to your home requires a US address. Non US addresses will pick up customized bands at resort.

on MDE there's usually a 'do it by' date that is about 30 days out. I've always considered that to be the deadline - but then again we always customize as soon as we can and then have to wait for the bands to finally ship!

Is the name actually visual on the band (if so outside or inside?). Or is it an assignment of band number to a particular person?

The name is printed on the underside of the MagicBand.

This ^^^ and I believe it pulls up for the CM to see when they scan the band. So, if I put Princess Consuela Banana Hammock that's what the CM will see.

The CM actually sees the "reservation" name and not the nickname. You are free to put whatever name you choose on the band, it's just to identify them within your group especially if everyone wants blue bands.

exactly - for the ride CMs they only see your actual first name - so they see "Karen" even though the inside of my band says W.Explorer . I think the ipad CMs can see your whole name (as in last name too)

Unfortunately, they limit you to maybe 10 or so letters. I tried doing something cute for my son's MB and it wouldn't let me because of the limit.

You can use numbers, but you only have 9 characters to work with, so there isn't enough room for a full phone number.
