How scary is Splash Mountain?

I say if you're on the fence go ahead and try it! It is a great Disney experience and there's nothing horrible about it at all.

That being said, I don't go on it anymore. A couple of times in my life was enough. I hate big drops (or, more accurately, the anticipation right before big drops), so I happily skip Splash Mountain now.

My 3-year-old gleefully rode Splash twice with DH on our recent trip. DH said DS wasn't scared at all except maybe a bit during that up-and-down-and-up part shortly before the big drop. I'm glad DH has someone to go on Splash Mountain with him now!

My two DDs (7 & 4) have some ride anxiety and we're getting them primed for our upcoming trip.

I really believe if we can get them on Splash Mountain they'll enjoy it, but on our trip planning video the big drop looks a lot steeper than it actually is. That has them quite concerned!

You will really like the ride. There is a story being told along the way. Good ole briar Rabbit is being chased by Briar Fox and Briar Bear. The end of the ride isn't even the drop. We got to ride it three times without getting off during MNSSHP on Oct. 5th. The drop does get your heart going ( or stopping) though. I did not ride and roller coaster at the parks but would ride Splash Mountion again.

The scariest thing I ever saw at Splash Mountain was one of the birds at the end DIDN'T HAVE EYES! I guess they had somehow fallen back into it's head or something, I don't know...but it sure scared the heck out of me to see one of the singing fishing birds with black holes in it's head (They since fixed it...it was a long, long time ago)

I am a ride sissy.... I do not do rollercoasters at all, but can do Splash Mountain.. there are couple little drops, which I am not terribly fond of but the ride is so cute, I can get through them..
I actually like the big drop at the end better than the little ones.. if I can do it.. you can..

I don't like the way it's so slow at the beginning because I know what's ahead.

This is what makes it scary for me, the slow anticipation.

This past trip I got to ride it during E-night, the first time at night, and it was a different experience than in the daylight. I like it so much better at night, not scarier, just more exciting.

We did a number of parks up north this summer and every picture taken on the splash mountain type of ride shows the same thing. My mouth is open wide and I'm screaming uncontrollably while my 4 and 5 yr old are smiling. After the 6th or so time my 4 yr old had the presence of mind to stick her fingers in her ears and stick her tongue out at the camera while I'm still screaming away!

Well, I got up the courage to ride it. The worst part was the fear of the unknown the first time I rode it. But I did twice more so it wasn't that bad. Everyone is right--it looks worse than it is.

Actually, Splash Mountain is VERY sneaky! they lull you into a nice happy stupor and then...POW! down you go! JUST KIDDING! it's a really fun ride and the drop is not really as bad as some people say it is. I hate roller coaster rides and it's nothing like that. I actually have fun every time I ride it so don't let anything scare you away because I'm a real whimp. HAVE FUN!

No, no one could pay me to do something with ANY drops. I won’t even try it. Not even if you gave my a lottery ticket with the winning numbers on them. NOPE NOP E NOPE!!! I know my limits! I don’t even enjoy the drop feeling from the Pirates Of The Carribean Ride or when a Car goes down roads.

Nope, not doing Space Mountain either. I don’t do any roller coasters period. Not even willing to try one.

I have an EXTREME fear of heights, speed and darkness and I am not willing to even try to overcome them because I feel that fears only need to be faced and conquered when they interfere with something mandatory such as working a job, going to the doctor and dentist etc.

There’s no reason why fears involving any sort of entertainment and amusement needs to be challenged or overcome.

I’ll just do what I already like and enjoy instead.

I’m not down for and have no interest in new experiences, people or foods etc.

I’m not willing to ever leave my comfort zone for anyone or anything.

I LOATHE all forms of adrenaline and excitement.

The ONLY rides I like and am willing to go on are the slow ones such as Never Land, Snow White, etc. The ones that just slowly move around and recap the movies.

Not wasting my money and time on stuff I hate and will just ruin the rest of my day and sour my mood.

And I would never make or even encourage a child to do anything they don’t want to do if it’s not a necessary thing.

I don’t even like the small drop in Pirates Of The Carribean and when a car goes down a road that dips.

No one could pay me to ride this. Not even for a winning lottery ticket. NOP NOPE NOPE!!!

Aside from the drop, there's nothing scary about Splash Mountain (and even that is over relatively quickly!). The rest of it is fairly calm, although there's a small drop or two - nothing at all severe. The rest finds you floating through some unique and really incredibly rendered settings.

Never fear, just enjoy!

I do *not* like roller coasters. I do not like big drops.

I do like Splash Mtn. I think because you're in water, it does not "drop" as fast as a coster.

The rest of the ride is not scary at all, just a couple "little" drops inside (no more than 1 story).

My mom is not a coaster fan at all, but she will ride Splash Mountain. I think there's something about the water not being as bad!!

My 10 year old daughter loves it. I would suggest you download the movie file of Splash Mountain that is located on The DIS homepage.

I rode SM twice this last trip. The only part I really didn't like the first time was "The Laughing Place" part of the ride. It's a bit like the drop in Pirates, in the dark. But the second time I knew what to expect so it was fun......what a laughing place
However, I will say that the large drop looks much worse than it is. I really enjoyed SM and would ride it again and again

My five year old DD rides SM with her hands up in the air...practically the whole time, lol!! It's a great ride!

I disagree w/everyone here.

I ride Splash Mountain to appease my 8-yo daughter, but I'm gritting my teeth, closing my eyes and white-knuckled during the drop. I don't like the way it's so slow at the beginning because I know what's ahead.

I guess the fear gets worse w/age (46 years). What makes it worse is DH and DD are laughing the whole time! At me!!!!

Wish me luck when we visit again November 8th-15th.

TECHNIQUE FOR RIDING SM THAT HAS WORKED FOR ME AND MY FRIENDS (I'm moderately nervous about rides --- didn't go on Space Mountain for 10 years and screamed so much my 1st time on BTM that a 6 y/o kid turned around and looked at me and my knees were shaking when I got off. Now I do them all):

Sit back in your seat and put your arms straight up as you're getting ready for the big drop.
When you reach the top, look straight ahead and focus on how beautiful the castle is (especially gorgeous at night).
This forces you to look up and out. DO NOT look down. It might make you feel like you're falling.
Remember that the drop is less than 2 seconds, so ---- no matter what --- it will be over incredibly quickly.
And SMILE AND LAUGH. Attitude is half the battle. Plus, it makes a great picture.

Splash Mt ride last about 10 minutes, mostly gentle floating thru fun scenaries. Don't miss it for a 3 seconds not-that-scary drop.

The ride is so quiet that the logs don't have a seat-belt or a restraint, only a bar you can hold with your hands.

It's wonderful. I was wondering the same thing, but it was fine. It was a gentle smoth ride and then the end is over before you know it. Don't worry about it and have fun.

You can stand outside & watch the boats drop. I promise that it's much easier than it looks. They build it up to scare you, especially that last lift hill, but really, it's a cute ride with one good splash-down at the end. You will get wet though!

Nope not like a roller coaster. More like you go up slowly then you go down.

As you go through the mountain the drops become "deeper". Amazingly its not the last drop that gets me it's the one right before the last drop.

This one has a double dip up down up down. Sort of like a mini roller coaster feeling.

But at that point I know that I'm almost to the big drop. Sitting in the log boat at the top and looking out at the park is way cool.

Now if I could just keep my eyes open all the way down.

I love Splash Mountain. It is one of my favorite rides. It is not scary at all. You will definitely regret it if you skip this ride.

If you can get the very front seat, the sight below you is awesome and really makes the ride. Take off your hats first as I have lost two on SM

I made myself ride Splash Mountain on a recent trip and it was the second drop (in the dark) that got to me. I agree that the final drop wasn't as bad as that one. I did enjoy the beginning and am glad I did it once - but that was enough. It isn't worth the anxiety for me!! I was shaking when I got off.

I absolutely love Splash Mt. It is one of the highlights of my trip. My kids love it too! (8,8,12,14) They've been going on this ride for several years now. My dh doesn't do this ride because of his back.

As mentioned above, the ride is very tame and gets a little wilder as you go. The last drop is not as bad as it looks to people watching on the bridge. You do get some very cool views of the park (especially at night) from the ride.

For an older child or adult the big drop at the end is the only potentially scary thing.................and that is over quick. Otherwise it is a fairly slow floating ride through wonderful scenes, with a couple of smaller drops here and there.

For a young child it can be a little scarrier. There is the big drop, and the slow climb up the dark hill with the vultures red beady eyes which can be frightening. The smaller drops aren't that bad for young kids, but one of them leads to the Laughing Place, which is a fairly dark part of the ride and can be a little scary for young kids.

You should try it at least once. It's a great ride, definitive Disney stuff. Millions have survived, and even if you don't like it, you can at least say that you gave it a shot!

No it's not closed. They're just chaning the theme, characters and story cuz of some accusations of something to do with racism. It's going to be the same darn ride, and no one is going to make me ride it or any roller coasters or any rides I don't want to at Disney nor is anyone going to convince me otherwise or guilt me into going by calling me a coward or whatever, and being like, no it's not that bad, trust me, like I just do not care about the fun other people think it is, I'm wired differently. I do NOT LIKE RIDES!!!
