How Scary Is Everest???

Can anyone who has been on this ride please tell us how scary it really is? We are going next month and my 7 year old son is excited about it but I am not sure if this is something he (we) should ride. It is not the Yeti I am concerned with, it is the actual ride itself. We go on Big Thunder in MK with no problem but he will not go on Splash Mtn. or Space Mtn. I can go on both of these, but I am terrified of the mainstream type rollercoasters like at Universal (ie: Hulk, Dueling Dragons, etc.). We have never been on the Rockin' coaster at Studios either. Is is more like Big Thunder or more like a regular rollercoaster in terms of scariness? Please, any info helps........Thanks!!

I would say if he doesn't like Splash or Space, he's not ready for Everest! It is not scary (to me) but it is intense. At one point the cars go backward, and that can be very disorienting.

I love the ride but doesn't sound like it's a good choice for your 7 year old.

I'm a chicken. I hate Roller Coasters. Loved EE. It is more like GTMR than a traditional coaster. No loops. No stomach churning. No wobbling after I got off.

EE is great. Rode it 3 times back in February.

I can't wait to try, was hoping I could talk my DS10 to go on. Right now he is saying no, so I probably won't ask again until we get there and if still no, leave it alone.

He use to love Splash Mountain when he was 6, next trips at 8 and 9 he refused to go on it. Will do Space Mountain in a heart beat. No RnR though either. Guess we'll be doing the old "family members taking turns" to go on, but that's fine-better to have a good trip and take a bit longer to get on rides then make him feel like he should be riding it.

My 7yo daughter's "big" ride status (for comparison):

Splash Mountain: yes, since age 4, loves it
Big Thunder Mountain: yes, since age 4, thinks it is "not her thing" (not thrilling enough)
Test Track: yes, since age 4, likes it
Star Tours: yes, but hasn't ridden it since age 4.
Kali River Rapids: yes, since age 4, but doesn't like getting soaked

Mission SPACE: yes, since age 5, enjoys it

Soarin': yes, since age 6, enjoys it
Rock n' Roller Coaster: yes, since age 6, was very nervous about it but likes it now
Primeval Whirl: yes, since age 6, loves it
Expedition Everest: yes, since age 6, enjoys it - especially the view from the top

Space Mountain: nope (parental ban - single file seating)
Dinosaur: nope (parental ban - scaryness)
Tower of Terror: not yet - scaryness, but will be tested within a year
Stitch's Great Escape: nope (no interest whatsoever)

She's also REALLY apprehensive about the Haunted Mansion and the Maelstrom.
She does still get nervous before going on some of the bigger rides, especially ones she hasn't been on in a while, but we usually reassure her successfully that she'll do fine on it. If she just really doesn't want to do it or gets too scared, we skip it for the day.

Everest is not a scary coaster, although it is a lot more intense than Big Thunder Mountain. But if your son doesn't like the drop on Splash Mountain, it's probably a safe bet that he won't enjoy Everest.

You did not mention the number of people in your party. But if you have someone to watch the youngster, I would recommend that you hop onto the single rider line and experience the ride yourself. Then you can decide if your child would like the ride. EE is smooth, and a great experience in my opinion.

Enjoy.

I am glad that someone mentioned that EE is smooth. I know my 5 yr old DS will be interested in riding it the next visit(June 2007). He will be 6 then. I would worry a little if it was like a rocky wooden roller coaster.

I would highly suggest that when you get there, you go to the Expedition Everest viewing area which is to the right of the entrance area. It gives you a fantastic view of the "scariest" part of the attraction - the drop. With anybody who isn't sure if they want to ride this, that will be the make or break point. I watched this attraction being built for three years and figured I'd have to be drugged to get on it. I don't like roller coasters that have a long climb to start out. But after watching the action from the viewing area, I figured people were surviving the drop and having a good time so I went on it. And loved it. So much, I made a quick one day trip down there just to ride the darn thing again!

I haven't been on it but am REALLY excited to go. How scary is the Yeti?

wdwguide~ GOOD JOB on the "parent ban" for Dinosaur- I'm 23 and that thing scares the bejeezus out of me! :rotfl:

For anyone going before September 30th- there's a link on the budget board to play a game to get a free pic of yourself on Expedition Everest. OP- you could catch your DS on it for the first time! ;)

copied from buzz2400:This was posted on the freebie post. go to www.disneyeverest.com, download game, play the three levels and you will get a coupon to hand in at guest relations at AK to get a free picture of you on expedition everest. It is relatively easy to play.

It's actually a really fun game. Took me a while to get to level three though- you can't "die" on it though, so as long as you keep going, you'll get the coupon to print out. Make sure you exchange it at guest relations for a real coupon to take to the picture place!

Dude. Its WAY scary.

My daughters (ages 13, 11 and 8) rode EE six times when we were there last week! We love it -- it is smooth, but it is intense. The yeti is pretty scary at the end, too. My feeling is that if you don't do Space Mountain, you won't do EE. No, there are no inversions like Rock n Roller Coaster, but it is fast, unpredictable (the backwards part is a lot faster and longer than I had expected) and the yeti is huge and swings at you as you end the ride.

You can also have an adult in your group ride and report back to anyone unsure of going exactly what it is like. And the previous poster is correct; you can see some of the fast part of the coaster (but not the yeti stuff) by watching outside, particularly on the pathway between Asia and the Theatre in the Wild.

We rode EE in March during EMH...went thru the line so fast I barely had time to glance at the museum exhibits and thus do not think I had enough time to mentally prepare myself. I rode with my 8 yr old son who loves Thunder Mtn but will not do Splash because of the drop. We had just been on Primeval Whirl about 7 times in a row(thought I was smart building him up for the EE, waiting until EMH began...perhaps that is what contributed to my headache immediately following EE!!)

We liked everything except the backwards thru the dark part...even the drop was tolerable(we were busy looking for family to wave at). Even though we had the chance to got right on again, he was hesitant and I did not push it(see above for reasons why).

I agree you might want to go thru the single rider line and decide for yourself if your child should go...but sometimes you just never know 'til you try! :)

My 6 year old daughter rode everything she was tall enough too ride, including space, splash and big thunder (10 times). BUT, EE is much more intense than all of these! Remember you go BACKWARDS IN THE DARK! That put my daughter over the edge. Also, it is much faster that the others as well. Definitely go on first and try it yourself...you are the best judge of what he will like. That being said, as an adult, I LOVED IT!!!!! Good luck! :thumbsup2
