How revealing are the suits on the beach and pools...

It's kind of hard not to look. That makes no sense. It's in front of us. We see it. I dont appreciate having to see your bare ***. Just like I dont appreciate seeing your underwear (for those who like to wear their pants half way down their legs). Mind you, Ive never seen anyone wearing their pants down their legs at disney but I have seen it elsewhere and Im just trying to make a point. It's not like a show on tv that if I dont like I can switch the channel. It's in front of me, where I am. Inappropriate is inappropriate whether you like it or not. With your logic then I should be able to just walk into a park naked and if you dont like then look away! Really??! give me a break!

You can change seats. You can actually watch your children in the pool. You can read a book. There are a zillion ways to not see something - especially something that could well be considered "family appropriate" for other cultures.

And no, I don't wear thong bathing suits. I'm not even a fan of them, but I don't let it ruin my cruise. Like men's speedo suits. If I see it as I'm walking by or settling in, I see it. But I'm not going to stare at it. I have other things to do and to occupy myself with. I don't get so fixated on it that it's all I can see.

mans opinion. like the 1 piece better.but im a 1 piece guy.i say leave something to the imagination.
flash back to our first cruise wife and i sitting on serenity beach and a non English adult family camps out right beside us.
the older gen.sat in the back but the 20ish/30ish age group grabbed chairs beside us.and you guessed it the female of the group had on one of the smallest suits ive seen.
now dont get me wrong she wore it WELL.here i sit on the beach with my bride for 25 years and this woman plops down 5 ft away. it was all i could do to keep my wife from slapping me in the back of the head all morning.

What you think is inappropriate by your standards or culture, may or not be by my standards, and it really is wrong to be so judgmental. If someone wears a thong, or I see their underwear, which I have only seen in America, or if someone wants to go topless, it really isn't a big deal. We were on the beach in Egypt when DS was 9, and he came up to me and whispered that a woman was bathing topless, I explained to him, while I don't do it, there were many woman around the world that did. He understood that was THEIR culture, he said, "oh, ok." and went on playing. It is my job as a parent to teach him to tolerate, understand and care about the people and the world he lives in. There are worse things that are happening in the world that bother me a lot than if I see thong or someone topless.

I also might have a bit of a different perspective. We are lucky enough to be living in another country that in not our home country. You become very humble when you don't understand the language, have to try to communicate, find food at the grocery store, and then be able to find your way home from the store. Now almost two years of living here, I don't worry when someone asks me a question and it is not in English. We have traveled throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa, and find that people are people and want to share their lives and culture with you. I have learned so much in these two years, and DS, well I could write a book about how much he has grown and matured over the last two years. We are also lucky that we live in a very International community. We have friends from all over the world now, and can't imagine my life if we hadn't moved here. When we have a get together, woman from around the world bring what is part of there culture. Imagine you are sitting at a table eating sushi made by a Japanese woman, Italian cookies by an Italian, curry from an Indian woman, and buffalo chicken dip by an American woman, but in the end we figure out we are all in the same boat, mom's with kids, living in another culture, sharing a meal and some laughs talking about our families and kids. :)

Yes, cultures differ and I would not dream of going into another culture and telling them to change or to do things my way. However, a Disney cruise is based in American culture, like it or not. As such, I think people should try to conform to the general culture of the ship. Excessive skin is not a norm in American family-oriented culture and should be respected.

Wow! I bet the OP didn't realize a simple question about her cute 50s swimsuit would spark such controversy and provoke others to feel the need to convince everyone that their opinion is the right opinion. Reading these comments and watching others try to justify that if something doesn't bother them, it shouldn't bother anyone or if something isn't a big deal to them, it shouldn't be a big deal to anyone else is rather interesting.

I think the difference between "well, other cultures wear thongs and we shouldn't judge" and "I don't want to see someone's naked butt" is the comfort level each culture has with nudity. Maybe in Europe (or Egypt!) people are more relaxed about nudity and don't feel like it's such a big deal, but here, in the US where the idealized body form is hyper-sexualized, our outlook is more puritanical than others. I'm not sure why, since you can't drive anywhere or walk through a mall without seeing butts and boobs on advertisements. But I think the expectation on a US-based Disney cruise is more modest swimwear than say, on the beach in Rio. It's a matter of degree, and expectation.

To address the main point: the polka dot swimsuit is ADORABLE! The one-piece is great, too. Very 50's bombshell, which was very risqué for that time. Perhaps if DCL had been cruising in the 50's, this suit would have been regarded in the same way some are regarding thongs!
