The Summer 2008 Disney Files listed the number of members by state. For instance - my state of Alabama has 800 members.

Someone mentioned in an earlier posting that it would be interesting to see which states had the most members, taking population into account. I have figured the odds for each state, and will be happy to post if anyone is interested. However, for now, I have just listed the states in order of DVC density, and gave approximations of the odds for a few to give you an idea.

Chances are...if you live in NJ, you are either a DVC member, or you know one. There are some interesting figures in here. You are much more likely to own DVC in Louisiana (19) than you are if you are in neighboring Mississippi (39) or Arkansas (46).

Here are the rankings! Enjoy!

1. NJ 1 in 695
2. RI
3. MA
4. NH
5. CT
6. DE
7. FL 1 in 1300
8. NY
9. PA

Based on 2000 Census figures.

Checking in from "Little Rhody"....I was surprised that RI had so many members because it's, well, so small. I think NJ and then RI are the most densely populated states in the U.S. (at least they used to hold the #1 & #2 spots) so it's not surprising they're at the top of the list. It's interesting to see your breakdown.

It's too bad they chose not to include the international owners:rolleyes:

I too would love to see the breakdown for countries other than the USA, as this breakdown information for USA states has been published before (but never breakdowns for other countries).

Very interesting.

When I saw the figures in Disney Files, I wondered how much Doorway to Dreams had increased membership in Illinois. Seeing your figures, I bet it has increased membership in IN and WI as well.

What a cool list! In DE which is 6th on your list I bet the vast majority of owners in DVC are from one county - New Castle. Okay, so we only have three counties in the whole state, but I'm always surprised at how many DVC stickers I see on the road!!

Quick FYI, the numbers were not number of members, but rather number of member households (not that it really makes a difference)...

Very interesting. I told DH when I saw this in the "Disney Files", that I was surprised WA had as many members as it did. I figured we'd be way down at the bottom. :)

That is true. I think that makes the Northeast numbers even that more incredible.

The Alabama ranking seemed right on target, by the way. Why do you think DVC is less popular in Alabama? We are an adjoining state.

My guess is...

1) Many Alabamians vacation either in the mountains or on the gulf coast
2) Disney is too expensive for many Southerners
3) Too many people became leary of timeshares back in the 80s
or...
4) We start getting withdrawl symptoms if we can't get Mt. Dew for more than 5 days. (He He)
5) There are no Disney characters named Big Al, and some Disney visitors have never heard of Bear Bryant.

Another Rhody Islander checking in ! Just bought this last trip down

That would be hard to say. Most Tide fans stay in Fantasyland.

BTW, Wisconsin is a great state. You guys should think about getting your own pro team.

;)

OK, back to the regularly scheduled conversation about DVC per capita.

Bump!!

I'm not ready to let this one go yet.

Are you surprised at the # of DVCers in your state? Do you think its on target? Why do you think DVC IS or IS NOT so popular in your state?

I am from #13 Maine and I really enjoyed your list! What are our odds???

I was surprised that we were #13. I am not sure why we ranked so high except that we Mainers/ New Englanders get sick and tired of the cold and we long to be in sunny, warm Florida!

Hi higienejean!

Maine is ranked #13, has a state population of 1,275,000 and has 600 DVC memberships. That averages out to 1 DVC membership for every 2125 people.

1:2125

FYI, #12 VT averaged 1:2029, while #14 - Michigan averaged 1:2208. Your neighbor's in NH really like DVC. They ranked #4, with a 1:883 ratio.

Thank you for asking!

Not many owners in Missouri. Something like 1100, I think, and those are mostly clustered around St. Louis and Kansas City. Most people in the Ozarks just go to Branson. We're the lonely owners in our area (roughly the rural middle of nowhere). Anyone in Springfield?
