How old were you when you bought your first home?

I've been seeing a lot of threads recently about buying new homes (congratulations to you all!) and other related topics. Here in Hawaii, homes are pretty expensive, on average $350,000 or even $400,000 for an average 3 bedroom/2 bath home. I am almost 32 and do not own my own home, and only a handful of my friends my age own their own home. Most rent or live with their parents. I am almost certain that if I moved to Las Vegas (BF and I frequently consider it since his dad lives there and he has an extra home we could rent from him until we could afford our own) we would be able to afford a home within a few years.

So I was just wondering how old some of you DISers were when you purchased your first home?

My husband and I were 27 and we cought a condo for cash. Bought our second home, a 3 bedroom 1 bath house at 32. Meanwhile we kept the condo and rented it to help pay for the house.

We just bought our first house earlier this year. I was 26 at the time.

Around here we were actually probably in the last group of our friends to buy a house.

I live in Fairfield County, CT where the homes are also very expensive. We bought our house in 1989, when I was 23 years old and DH was 24. We probably couldnt afford to live in this town if we had to buy now. We were lucky we bought when we did.

I was 19 when we were having our house built, I was 20 and DH was 22 when we moved in. We are still in the same house and love it!

I was 26 when I we bought our first home which was a half of a duplex, lived there for 5 yrs then bought our single 3 bedroom 2 bathroom home then after 13 yrs here we got divorced, I was very lucky I could swing the house on my own so I bought my X out. Now i am a single homeowner at 45 and loving it.

Don't despair!...My DH and I come from sunny Ca. where homes are so expensive most of the people we know had family help them out to get into their homes here.....It was hard but we did it...we were 36 and 40....Within a year we bought our second home in Fl...who would have guessed!

Hawaii is so beautiful!...We were just there in May...are you sure you could adapt to the desert climate?....It is so HOT! there are you willing to give up so much just for a home?

I was 26 when we bought our home. It was right before the real estate in Boston went through the roof, we were lucky. We just refinanced again today at 5.3% fixed for 15 years YAY!! I love saving money

we rented from a relative for 8 yrs and that was becoming an increasingly bad situation
We are so much happier now
It has only been 6 weeks but it feels like forever

I was 23, DH was 22. We built a home while we were engaged. We sold that one after 4 1/2 years and are now in our second home that we built. The next one will be the last, my dream home. Hopefully in about 3-4 years, I'll be 33 then!

We live in Central Illinois. I was 24 and DH was 25. We had been married since 19, 20.

We lived in that house for 3.5 yrs. Then moved the house we presently live in!

I was 21 and single when I bought my first home. Tired of paying rent for an apartment. Sold that 1-1/2 months later and bought another. Lived there for 8 years before getting married. Put DH through rest of his college. Had two kids and then my DH and I moved to a larger home where we are today.

We bought our first house when I was 20 years old. Fortunately DH and I had parents that talked about the benefits of owning a home rather than renting for a long time. We did live in an apartment for our first year of marriage, but then before our first anniversary we bought our first house That was 21 years and 3 houses ago

Made settlement in May of 1980, I was 19 years old. It was a townhouse in surburban Philadelphia.

We got married that October.

Five years later, we sold it for twice the amount we paid for it!

1978 when we got married. I was 23, DH 26. It cost $45,000.00!! That was right before real estate went sky high here. It was more than we wanted to pay, our limit was $42,000.00!! LOL

I was 24 and hub was 27 when we bought a 3 bedroom ranch in Fairfield Cty, CT. At 35 and 38 we built a 5 bedroom home in the same town. Just recently refinanced and appraisal was almost double from what we paid.

Gotta love this country....
