It's not just changing fares. They have a limited number of seats in each fare category and when they sellout, they move up to the next fare category. They monitor inventory, if they see a flight isn't selling, they may move more seats to a lower fare category. Or there maybe a sale, I got an e-mail today for a sale 2/21 to 6/6.

Thanks for the heads up on the fares from BDL. We were booked on Southwest (first time using) for our Aug. 9-16 trip and I just checked and the fares for the flights both ways have gone down so I just saved $200 for the 4of us. Does anyone know, does Southwest offer upgrades to Business Select on the day of online check-in if there are seats that haven't been booked. We were able to upgrade on our trip last Aug. on Delta and it was really great. Thanks for any help.

Southwest does not have Business Select seating, they have one class of seating, that's it. It is called "open seating". They do, however, have three classes of fares. Business select, anytime and I wanna get away. For information on those different classes, go to SWA.com

Southwest GA will sometimes offer business select upgrades. They'll promote the free drink and extra RR credit. Not a big discount over the price of BS if you originally booked it. It might make sense if you're already paying a fully refundable fare, didn't do OLCI and wound up with a C BP at the airport. I don't think any of us would pay the $$$ to "upgrade" to business select from the deeply discounted fares we book to MCO.

The seats are the same. The first 10 BPs go to passengers who booked business select.

Thanks Lewis, for that info. But, I was responding to her question and it involved seating and since she mentioned a different airline that possibly has better seating in Business select, I responded as I did.
not sure I would go for the BS upgrade if I had a deeply discounted fare either.

Did you try Jet Blue out of Bradley. I am flying on Jet Blue next week as they were cheaper than SW.

Thanks for the answers. We have done the early check-in so we will just stick with that. I was referring to the upgrade we did last year with Delta to first class which is entirely different seating than the regular fares. Not sure how much cheaper JetBlue is out of BDL but their flight times for non-stops are awful. Update - just checked JetBlue and they aren't cheaper for the dates that we are going and as I said, their non-stops are terrible times and the last thing I want to do is take a flight with a lay-over that is in Puerto Rico.

SWA flights go up and down all the time. What dates are you going in August? After 8/15 you can usually get a pretty good fare. As someone who flies BDL to MCO at least three times a year and watches the fares constantly, $120 is an OK fare, under $100 - grab it while you can Used to be Under $80 grab it while you can :rotfl:). We are going in March and because we had some flexibility in our dates I held off from booking for several months. The OW fares were sometime $120, sometimes $150, sometimes $114...Finally in Jan, the fare dipped below $100 each way and I grabbed them. On 1/11 I booked our flights for 3/10-3/21. On one of the flights, that low fare only seemed to be available for about 24 hours. Our return flight, the low fare was out there for about 2 weeks, but not necessarily every day.
In past years, I have also been able to snag a lower fare about 3-4 weeks before travel date.

Good luck!
Anne
