My feather bed is a PITA to wash/dry. I have to take it to a laundry mat 30 minutes way where they have a 75lb washer and dryer. Along with my 10 tennis balls. I change my sheets quite regularly, 2x a week usually, but the feather bed, only gets washed/dried 2x a month if i'm lucky. Its actually under a comforter, and then the fitted sheet because i hate getting stuck with feathers when I'm sleeping, so it doesnt get "soiled"

i love the way its so fluffy after washing/drying but its such a pain! Even fluffing, tossing, and turning it over doesnt fluff it up like the washer/dryer does.

Confess- how often do you wash yours?

I don't have one, but didn't know you COULD wash them! LOL. I used to wash my down coat and would dry it with tennis balls in just the air dry cycle of my dryer. I can't imagine washing it twice a month though!

I don't have a featherbed, but I do have a down comforter...close enough, right? Anyway, in the year that I've had it, I've never washed it...I had just heard that they don't do well going through the wash. So I just keep it covered with a duvet. Works well. The duvet is much easier to wash.

Can you tell me what the tennis balls are for please.... and to answer the question we dont have one because it is florida and too hot. I would think that with changing your sheets 2x a week and having a comforter over it that it would be pretty clean. I would through it in the dryer only to kill germs and fluff it up and not keep washing it.

I'm fessing up too. I have one that's for the sleeper sofa. I've had it for about 6 months and it's been used maybe 20 times at most. I have absolutely no intention of ever washing it. :teeth:

I also have a pillow top mattress (both sides of the mattress) and have no intention of ever washing that either. I see them as the same I guess.

Like you though, we do not sleep (well kids do not, I don't sleep on the sofa bed) directly on the featherbed.

Uhm...didn't know you COULD wash them. So my answer is, uhhh, never. I change the sheets weekly and always fluff it/Lysol it at that time, but I have never put it in the washing machine. How many cycles does that sucker take to dry?

I also have a down comforter in a duvet....how often do I wash it? Every time Mavric throws up on it! Thank goodness DM has a nice new LG front loading washer and dryer! Although I have done it in my regular one when desperate!

The tennis balls are to keep the down from wadding up....makes it even fluffier!

Because the dryer is a 75lb dryer, it doesnt take "that' long to dry. I take it out every 5-6 minutes and fluff it as its drying.

the thing is- when its freshly laundered, its sooooooo fuffy, fluffier than when it was new i love sleeping on it for the first couple of days!

I think i might just bring it and toss it in the dryer with tennis balls...its not getting dirty.

Heck, there are feather beds at my great grandmother's house (who has now passed) that are nearly 100 years old and have never been washed. I didn't know you were supposed to wash them. We have always just taken great care to keep them clean, spot washed the lining and took them out and 'beat' them. They are still have a like new fluffiness and feeling.

I have never washed mine. Too afraid of how it will come out!!!!! Everyone in the house has a feather bed. We tood DD's to the dry cleaners a few years ago. It started out as a queen size. When we got it back it was about as big as a large dog bed :dog2: :dog2: !!!!! They shrunk it :earseek: . That is why washing it isn't on my list of priorities.

ah the good old feather beds. I remember the REAL ones like those at your great gramma's house! They had REAL feathers, 100% real feathers....ugh I miss those...the new ones are never full true feathers, theres always something synthetic in them.

It says on the tag to dry clean only, but the reason they say that is because its hard to get them dry dry. Thats why I go with the big boy dryer...I think I could fit my entire familiy in it. A normal size dryer just wont work.

I never thought of sprayint it with lysol, cant imagine that would smell too good every night sleeping though. I might get a duvet cover for it, even though its not a comforter. Or I might just toss it in the dryer and every 3-4 times wash it...its just a pain in the buttocks!

Actually, I use the new green apple scented Lysol and it really does smell good. But once the featherbed is back in its place underneath the sheets, you can't really smell the Lysol anyway. I don't know, I'm just a Lysol kind of girl. You know, when in doubt, Lysol it. :teeth:

I thought you weren't suppose to wash down things too often 'cause it breaks down the feathers..... :confused3 No????
