I changed my timing belt on my Toyota Celica when it reached 90,000 miles, it's not that it broke, the mechanic just said it is better to change it before it breaks.
if you have an overhead cam motor with a timing belt, not chain you need to change it preventitively around 75-90,000 miles. If it breaks your motor might be toast. They also do the water pump while they are at it.
I've replaced it once July 2003. I now have over 200,000 miles on the car and have no plans to replace the car - should I get it done every two years or so?
I agree with Tiggeroo. Every 75000 or so miles to save yourself having it break. We own a auto repair shop and also recommend replacing your fuel filter every 50,000 or so miles. This will save your fuel pump Your owners manual will give you some good suggestions also.
