How often do the refillable mug designs change?

Well, this thread just made me think about the mugs I got for a surprise for the kids!

A co-worker was just there and I asked if she could pick up 2 mugs for me since I knew we were going to buy them anyway for our trip in January. The kids don't know that we're going since it will be a Christmas present/surprise so I've been trying to get Disney stuff to put together for the big reveal. Now I don't know if I can use the new mugs I just got or if when we go, it will look like 'last' years mugs!! :confused3

Can anyone tell me if the lid allows you to use a straw with it?

This past June they changed during our stay. We got one mug and by the time we left they had a new mug design out.

We went in late January, and was still the old mugs (blue wintery looking ones.) Then I saw pictures of the new mugs in February...but by the time we went in May again they had changed again. I thought maybe they were going to start changing them every few months to keep track of "new" vs. "old". I do know that when we were at POFQ for a week in September, for the first time ever I saw castmembers telling people they could not use old mugs. Twice in line to pay the cashier told people in front of me that they would have to pay for their beverages and could not use the mugs on their tray; and a couple of times I heard the person cleaning up the soda fountain area tell people they needed to buy new cups because the ones they had were no good anymore.

Well, if it's like this year, they didn't change over immediately on Jan. 1 -- we were there just after MLK Jr. Day and they still had the previous year's mugs. And they didn't change all the resorts at the same time...they phased them in over a couple of months. Even if they do change, your kids will still have a nice souvenir;)

Can anyone tell me if the lid allows you to use a straw with it?

Yes you can use a straw - the lid is the kind that snaps on, then you swivel the top to open the drinking hole...can easily fit a straw in there.

If I remember right, they don't just change once per year. We went once in fall and once in winter and I remember the winter mug being full of winter designs. I love these mugs too! My dh can't get enough diet soda and I love the hot cocoa so it's well worth it for us!

Yum, hot cocoa every morning! I WILL get the mug this visit just for that...I'm a huge coffee drinker but hate Disney coffee. I've always stayed somewhere with a coffeemaker and bring my own coffee but staying at a value this time around. I think I'll survive without my coffee for a few days if I substitute cocoa, a splurge I never allow myself at home...

We get refillable mugs every trip (even though we come no where close to getting our money's worth out of them; I'm a travel mug junkie!). People on other refillable mug threads have said that during one of the times we purchased ours (Dec. 2001 at the Poly) that they are good forever but we were told nothing of that when we were there, there was no sign indicating that, and it's not on the mug itself.

My Dad (much to my dirty looks and brow beating) tried to use a POR mug at CSR during our 2004 trip (we were only at CSR for one night and then would be purchasing new POR mugs the next day in his defense) and was caught red-handed by a CM. :rotfl:

I wish they would go back to resort specific mugs too (although I know why they don't). I found the designs better and much more fun to collect (like one of the refillable mugs we have from WL was during their 5 year anniversary and it says the dates on the mug).

Ok quick question about the mugs... are these refillable on any drinks anywhere? Or are these just at your hotel? I know that when we go we are looking at getting them in the Deluxe Dining Plan but I wanted to know how much use we would get out of them.

They are only good at the resort although I wish they would charge a few dollars more to be able to use them in the parks like you can use the ones at Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach (you can buy a refillable mug at the water parks and for the entire day you are there you just walk up to a drink kiosk, scan the bar code on your mug, and you can use the kiosk to get a drink; if you bring the mug back on subsequent trips it's a little cheaper as they put a new barcode over the original barcode instead of giving you a new mug [of course, you CAN get a new mug, it's just cheaper to just get the new barcode]).

What we usually do is fill up our mugs before getting on the bus/boat/monorail to go to the parks in the morning. Then when we go to a CS we'll purchase the largest size drink possible and pour the leftovers into the mug or if we go to TS we'll pour whatever's left in our glass into the mug or use it to dump the free cups of ice water you can get at CS places into the mug.

I have read all of the previous posts and I can't find this answer. If the cups are the same no matter what resort you are staying at, can you use the same cup if you do a split stay?

Example: I'm thinking of starting my trip at All Star Sports and then hopping to CSR. If I buy the cups at All Star Sports, do I need to buy another at CSR??

I hope this makes sense. It is the same trip just moving resorts.

Yes you can! The mug is good for the "length of your stay". I asked a CM on our last trip if you go to visit other resorts during your "length of stay" are you allowed to use their refill stations (as we like to spend a night during the Christmas season visiting other resorts to see decorations) and she said you are allowed to use your refillable mug at any resort refill station as long as you are using it during the length of your current trip. Since the designs are the same now we buy a mug on our arrival night (we usually get in late so we just stay at a value resort for the first night) and then use it for the rest of our stay when we check into our WDW resort the next day. Our mugs look like everyone else's.

You're welcome!! :goodvibes I continue to learn things on these boards that I never knew so it's nice to be able to help other people out with my experiences :).

Curious to know when was this?

For us, it was the first year we owned DVC, so 2001 (right after 9/11)
I usually don't bring the mug with us (I personally like the newer slimmer designs) so I usually buy a new mug when we go(plus I like collecting them). The new mugs specifically states can only be used during the stay purchased. The mug I purhased in 2001 does not state it and we were told it was good for life.

I think this may be new. When I was came back from my Sept 26th-Oct 4th trip I posted that the CMs at the Rix Cafe at CSR were telling people they couldn't use their old mugs. This was the first time I've ever seen the CMs enforcing the policy. I heard them several times that week telling people they would have to buy new mugs or else pay for their beverages. They had the soda machine directly across from the cashier as you walk out. There were different cashiers there during my stay, but I heard all of them telling people they couldn't use the old mugs.

Just got home last night from POFQ (it was fab, as always) and noticed a few people using old mugs, paper cups, etc., but most had the new mugs. CM's seemed way too busy to bother policing the drinks area.

i buy a new mug every visit and have never gotten the same design ,i never use them smirnoff ice does not taste the same out of plastic

Thanks Neverlandclub!!

That helps a lot.

DIS ROCKS:banana:

:rotfl:It sure doesn't!!

I think it's hit or miss if the CM's "catch" people using old mugs or whatever. I ate at the POR food court several times during our August trip and there's no way with as busy as it was and how far away the drink area is from the cashiers that they would be paying attention. That being said, I KNOW it would be my luck that I would try to use an old mug when they had 4 CM's restocking the drink area every time I would go to use it . But I like buying a new mug during every trip :thumbsup2 and doing the right thing (I figure it cancels out all of the "free" toiletries I take from the room).

Are they still the same mug pictured in the posts above? I am kinda bummed they aren't changing. We went in the summer and got the QSDP so we got 4 mugs exactly alike (well handle colors are different) and we leave in a few days again. I was hoping for a new design or my DH won't want me to buy the same mugs we have at home  I really wish they went back to resort specific. It will be our first time at BLT /Contemporary and I would have liked to have had a mug specific to that resort.

I hope that if they get New Mugs they will have
the MUPPETS on them!!!

Curious to know when was this?

I believe it was during our trip in 1992 at POR (Dixielandings) when we were first told we could bring our mugs back year after year.....We were told the same thing again in 2005 at POFQ.....although shortly after that visit, I think Disney began printing on the mugs "good for length of stay only". Of course, we don't use our 'old' mugs at the stations, but we do bring them to use at the pool. :thumbsup2

We are planning a split stay this winter, so we plan on using the same mug(s) at both resorts.... just hope the design stays the same to avoid any stares or altercations with the CM's.:scared:
