How much should I pay a college girl who is going to be staying at our house for 1 week while we are at Disney? She will be taking care of our dog and getting the mail and the paper. She can't wait to stay here to get away from her family for one week. I asked her how much money she wanted and she said she had no clue. Anyone with any idea of how much to pay her?

I don't really know. I paid my sister $100 for a long weekend.

In Kansas City, I paid Critter Sitters $45 a day just to come over once a day to feed and water the animals and clean the catbox. I have no idea what it would be for someone to actually stay at your house. My sister is taking care of my animals for a long weekend while I go back to Missouri. I'm giving her a great big hug! Now before you all think I'm really cheap, I recently took care of her animals while whe was gone.

How much would it cost for your local kennel per day? Our local kennel, ehem...pet hotel for the regular "room" is $23.00 per day.
A "suite" or "cabana" is $33.00 per day.
In addition you can "add" things like play time and "extras" for more money.

I would at least pay no less than $20.00 a day. Probably $25-$30 a day is fair.

If it means a lot to you I would pay her accordingly. Atleast your dog doesn't have to be away from home!
I would probably give her $200 for the week. I'd pay more at our local kennel with all the play times etc.. so we would both be happy!

Depends on how well I´d know her. If I could compensate in other ways than with money I probably would, but if she´s almost a stranger I´d probably pay $ 150-200

we paid my BF $200 to housesit our 2 dogs and cat for 8 days

I've done housesitting for relatives and I've never been paid! Anywhere from a few days to up to 2 weeks, and one of those times was 2 weeks with 2 dogs who continually pooped on the basement floor.

I did get a "lovely" souvenir from their big vacation though (Kinda tacky looking wooden plaque thing)

I think $200 a week sounds like a nice amount.
I agree, this is what we pay for someone to take care of our two cats while we are out of town.

we pay $10/day if they stay at the house and eat here lol.

my housesitter always says he should be paying US! ( works for me ;) ) he eats here sleeps here gets a break from his family and gets to watch Dish.
He's more than happy to do it! LOL

We pay our friends $20 per day and usually go to WDW for 10 days, hence $200. I also pick up a really cool Disney polo or sweatshirt (around $60) for them, as well.

Don't go by what it would cost in a kennel. These individuals do not have the overhead and the surroundings are much more pleasant than a boarding place. You are comparing what it would cost you not what you are receiving. Oranges and Apples.

I would make the arrangements with the housesitter before you go away, that way you have an agreement and she/he is not surprised or disappointed in your settlement.

Bottom line - do what you feel is right.

I pay $100 for a week. Plus they get to stay at my house and eat all my groceries and watch my satellite and surf my computer for free, so I figure that covers it. When we had a new puppy (that we no longer have ) and it required a bit more attention, I upped it to $150.

My first thought is $100.00-150.00. It sounds she's looking forward to it.

I think $100 and a souvineer should be good. She did say that she's excited about getting out of her house. It's not like she's doing a whole lot of work. I think $200 is excessive, unless you had multiple pets that are hard work. $100 to a college student is usually a lot of money.

I think $150 sounds good. Make sure to write down everything you want her to do and not to do. Make sure there are no misunderstandings.
Also, make sure you have it written down what you want done in an emergency with the pet.

I pay my house/dog sitter (a college student) $50 a day or $300 a week. My dog needs quite a bit of attention though. He's a border collie and requires several long walks per day and usually a trip to the park to play frisbee to burn off some of that energy.

My first thought was ~$50/day. After reading the other posts, I would say a minimum of $200.

If she is living at your house, using your stuff, eating your food etc. I would say $100-$150 plus a souvenir. If your animals require a lot of work or attention, I would increase it proportionately.

Thanks for all your help. I think I will pay her $150 for the week and have food here for her. We will probably bring her back a sweatshirt from Disney. I knew this was the place to ask.
