We grew a lot of tomatoes this year - some are huge, some are regular size, some are plum tomatoes. How much would you pay for a really big homegrown tomato? My daughter wants to sell some, in lieu of a lemonade stand, she wants to have a tomato stand. ;)

I was thinking $1.00 for a really big one, 75 cents for the regular size, 2/75 cents for the plum size - does that sound too cheap or too expensive or just about right?

I guess it depends where you live...around here I'd definitely pay $1 for a nice big home grown Beefsteak tomato! I dont have time to grow my own, and the ones from the grocery store are crap.

We have a lot of farms around here, I just bought a box of 5 small-medium size home grown slicing tomatos for $3. A box of plum size (had about 8-10 in it) was $2.

So where is your daughters stand? I could take a few off her hands!!!

I love tomatoes fresh from the garden, and I would pay at least $2.00 per lb. I pay at least that much in the store and they aren't as good as the fresh homegrown ones. I wish you were close by I would buy all your daughter wants to sell.

Bought a 1/2 peck of medium sized tomatoes today for 3.00 at the Farmer's Market in town.

The first two prices sound just about right...but I might say 3/75 on the plum ones...but that's me. I don't know that I'd pay 2/75 on the plum ones...
Sometimes, the gentleman we buy from, if he has an abundance of regular sized ones, he sell them 2/$1 but you have to buy 2. no .50 for 1. ;)

This sounds reasonable. Here where I live so many people grow tomatoes they end up giving them away....

That's too cute; what an industrious child!

I can't comment on the prices, it all sounds cheap to me; I haven't seen tomatoes much cheaper than $2.95-$4/lb from farmer's markets.

Is she selling other stuff with them as enticements? Like the cookie platter on the lemonade stand?

If you grow basil she could like, offer a small bunch for $.50 or free if you buy $5 worth of tomatoes or something? Have her make mozzarella to sell, it's really simple - she'll be the neighbourhood mogul in no time! :lmao:

My DD did the same thing this year. She's getting 50¢ for the slicers (a mid-sized variety) and 3/$1 for sauce/plum types. The best sellers are the cherry & grape tomatoes, though - at $2 a box they're still cheaper than the grocery store and ours taste way better.

Yes, I did plant way too many tomatoes this year... especially since I haven't used up last year's batch of canned salsa or spaghetti sauce yet! I

I think I would do 2/$1.00 on large ones and 3/$1.00 for medium sized. My kids did this last year and the neighbors loved it :). We live in a subdivision. This year my tomatoes are too ugly to even give away, the tops are all split :(.

We grown our own, but when buying them at vegetable stands, $3 for a bowl of four smallish ones is pretty average. $1 for a big one is probably less than a $1 a pound. You might want to invest in a little scale of some sort and price by the pound. Anything $1 - $1.50 a pound is pretty cheap for homegrown tomatoes. I'd probably pay $2 a pound for really nice ones or if it was a neighborhood kid.

Actually, she does have basil plants for $1.00 each! :)

Your prices are in line with the farmer's market that we go to.

I agree with the other poster - that it might depend on where you live. In our area, there are a lot of tomato farms. In fact, in a nearby county they have the Slocomb Tomato Festival every year.

About 1 month ago, I purchased a grocery bag full of large Slocomb tomatoes for $5 - about 15 large tomatoes were in the bag.

Those are fine for canning. I know my sister asked at the farmer's market for 'seconds' tomatoes so that she could make sauce (they sell them for much less than the regulars).

So jealous hearing these price suggestions. Tomatoes at our farmers market are . . . (brace yourselves) . . . 8 dollars a pound. Makes me want to cry.

Grocery store tomatoes are cheaper at about $4/lb ($2.50 in summer for ones shipped from WA) but they're not especially ripe.

Put them in a paper bag, fold over the top a few times, and leave on the counter (vs in the refrigerator) two-three days.

Local farm stand here sells a basket of 6 for $2.50. They are medium sized at least.

I just bought five large tomatoes for $1 at the farmers market yesterday. A quart of regular grape/cherry tomatoes was also $1, a quart of cherry heirloom tomatoes was $3 or 2 for $5. I can get them at the grocery store for $2/lb.

perfect!

Just went to the local flea market which has a large produce section....paid $3 for 4 huge beefstake tomatoes! They are so good! About 3 weeks ago the same tomatoes were selling for $4/4....guess it fluctuates depending on supply/demand.
