How much weight did you gain?

I don't gain anything. Just because I'm on vacation doesn't mean I need to gorge myself with food all day long. I have a nutrition and fitness routine at home that I follow even when I'm on vacation.

We leave Mr. Adkins at home when we go on our cruises. I usually gain about 5 pounds even though it seems like we never stop. But it comes back off pretty quickly once we get back home.

I typically gain a few pounds depending on the length of the cruise because I'm not as active as I am at home and have so many food options all the time. Thank goodness, I have finally found a plan that works for me and have lost 14 pounds over the last 6 weeks. I am almost to my goal weight and will definitely be ready for bathing suit season and our next cruise. :beach:

First cruise - gained 0 pounds (with friends - drank a lot more than I ate! :drinking1)
Second cruise - gained 2.4 pounds (with husband - less drinking and more eating)...it was gone withing 2-3 weeks

I eat what I want on the cruises (within reason) and try to hit the gym more days than not...and stick to taking the stairs. :confused3 Once I get back home it's back to the normal routine.

on one ship tour of the fitness centre, they say the average cruiser gains 1 lb a day

That seems about right for me.

My diet when at home is pretty strict for the most part but on vacation I eat whatever I want. I try to avoid friend foods but not because they are unhealthy but I don't like how I feel afterwards. Same things with burgers...I usually avoid when possible. Not because they are unhealthy but because I usually don't like them. I kinda a burger snob.

But pizza, pasta, cream sauces, 1000 calorie alcoholic beverages, desserts...whatever just throw it at me. That being said, I still make sure I run a few miles each day so I can somewhat feel "normal"

Phew.... So happy to hear that most folks gain minimal weight. Been working hard over the last 2.5 years to lose 45 pounds (and maintain that loss). Haven't vacationed since the weight loss, and honestly, have been stressing it a little bit. We picked a cabin mid ship and I plan to use the stairs exclusively, drink lots of water, and try not to eat too many :mickeybar.

We did 3 days at WDW prior to the cruise. I lost weight (no scale, but I went down 1.5 belt holes). Then we went on the cruise and by the end of the 4 days, I was back to the original belt hole. When I came home I weighed exactly the same as I did before I left. So in the end I dint gain, but if I hadn't gone on the WDW portion, I would likely have gained weight.

Alright, ready for this? Got back home last Monday from a 7-Night cruise on the Magic. I had gained 6 pounds which I have already lost is all but 2 pounds. However, my BIL who had been dieting prior to the cruise to get down to his COMFORTABLE weight gained 24.5 pounds in the same week while on board with us. He has since lost about 14 pounds of it.

@Justacruiser He gained 24.5 pounds??? 24.5??

Two years ago we did a seven-day cruise and I felt like I ate like a glutton. I mean, just disgusting amounts of food.

After the cruise we had four days at WDW with relatively light eating (primarily because we had spent all of our money!!). I figured overall I gained maybe five or six pounds, but I actually lost 1. Credit it to all the walking in the parks, I guess.

Woah. That's insane!

I'm guessing a lot of these stories are water weight. From what I have read some people swell up on cruises for an unknown reason (theories are the high salt content in the food, or something about reacting to the desalinated shipboard water. I mean serious ankle/leg swelling, not 'need to unbutton top button of jeans' overeating.)

Last year we went to WDW for 3 night and then did a 3 night cruise. When I got back I had gained 7 lbs! It is SO hard for me to lose weight so I only lost 4 of that before my cruise last week (7 night Fantasy). I didn't drink any sodas, smoothies or special drinks but I did have desert with lunch and dinner and only gained 1 lb :cool1:
We also couldn't walk or take the stairs much because my DH neck was hurting and he had to be careful. I think I do eat healthier on a cruise though.

Congrats on losing 45 pounds, that's awesome!

I can semi-relate to your stressing - I worked really hard to lose about 25 pounds a few years back (doesn't sound like much but it was tough for me). I have two 7-day cruises coming up later this year and I'm a little nervous about them. But I'm trying to tell myself that I have have mostly good habits, and that time on the cruise is not how my normal life is, if that makes sense. And it's vacation, which to me, means that I can loosen the reins a bit.

I think your strategy of stairs + water is a good one...but lemme at those Mickey bars!!! :)

:faint: How did he have any clothes that fit?!

he was wearing the clothes that he had before he had lost the weight, just had to loosen the belt, lol.

Well that's just good planning! :teeth: I thought you were going to say that everything he had, had an elastic waistband!

Just got back from cruise this past Friday...If you want to eat a lot like I did and still lose weight on cruise, go to Magic Kingdom day before and follow a 5 and 3 year old around, guarantee you lose weight....I ate a ton of food but still lost 5 lbs because I must have walked and carried kids for 20 miles seems like, LOL....Whoever says not much walking done on the boat should have followed me around on the 4 day cruise, of course with the elevators jammed full most of the time I did take the steps a lot during the cruise...That is all you have to as well, get a room on the 2nd floor and take the steps up to the 11th every time...

The most important thing is to simply stop eating when you're not hungry any more. I think that many people get caught up in trying to "get their money's worth" because they paid for the food in the cruise price. There's always lots of healthy options and don't feel that you have to eat it just because it's there. If you get hungry later, there will always be something available and there will be healthier options. You had the discipline to lose the 45 lbs so continue to exercise that while indulging just a little. Even my trainer says that it's OK to indulge a little (he admits to doing that himself on vacation) but keep moderation in mind. If you do put on a couple of pounds on vacation, just focus on dropping it when you get home and don't stress about it.

Full disclosure: I lost 75lbs with lowcarb and have kept it off for six years now, but I will be eating any croissant I spot while on board. (I don't miss sweets too often, never cared about pizza or donuts, but croissants are my kryptonite/vacation indulgence.) it's possible I'll hit the gym on board, we'll see. :)
