Leaving in 30 days - on DxDP for the first time. I've recently lost 35 lbs (still have more to lose) and am trying to at least maintain while we are at Disney for a week. At the same time, I want to give myself a little slack to eat what I like (fried food junkie), and eat some of those desserts! I know we will be doing a ton of walking each day and I doubt I'll have much time to get a work out in otherwise. I recently went to Seattle and ate junk all week and did a lot of walking, but not nearly as much as we will do at Disney, and I didn't gain anything. I'm not counting on the same luck at WDW  How much did you gain if any, and do you have any tips??

First of all- Congrats on losing 35lbs!! Not an easy thing to do!

2nd- Last time I went, I was on the DDP and noticed that I didn't gain but LOST weight even with all the food I was eating! I did A LOT of walking and sweated a lot too... lol

Personally, you should enjoy yourself and don't beat yourself up if you do gain a little weight. I don't foresee gaining no more than 5 lbs, if that!

Enjoy!!

I don't think I've ever gained any weight at Disney because while yes, we do eat more, we are also very active while we're there. Whereas I might walk/jog a total of five miles per day at home, it's more like eight to twelve at Disney World. I would wager that most people have more trouble once they return home with their new Disney-fed appetites and decreased activity.

Your chance of gaining weight hinges on your touring style. Some people gain weight, but may not walk as much as those that don't. Also, if your body is used to a lot of exercise, the walking may not be that big of a deal and you could gain a little. I didn't gain anything on the 4 free dining trips that we've taken. One tip from me is to make sure you do a little walking after dinner. Have fun!

Portion control. For me, I find it's about how much I eat not necessarily what I eat.

I think it depends on what your regular routine is like. I'm in pretty good shape and run about 4 miles a day so when I was at Disney walking around the parks was way less hard than my regular routine. In 8 days I gained 7 pounds.

I had never gained weight at Disney until our last trip and I gained 2 pounds. I felt like it would be much more because we ate, a lot! I guess all of that walking does help.

My tip is to give up your membership in the clean plate club and become a member of the taste club. I find that I don't have to stuff in every last morsel. I can eat a few bites and leave the rest to go to waste instead of going to waist! Also, filling up on some water and high fiber cereal or something prior to mealtime will help you be sated with a smaller amount of food at the actual meal. Prior to the fiber cereal, I had issues with being "regular" on vacations...

I usually maintain my weight while on vacations. Last time DH and I went to WDW, however, he gained 8 pounds because his membership in the clean plate club did not only include his plate, but extended to my plate as well. :lmao:

ok first of all congrats on the 35#...your awesome...!!!!!!!!!!!!! second of all we did DxDP September 09 and we honestly felt we ate our way through Disney and have to say WE LOVED EVERY MINUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!....you do so much walking and sweating cause Florida is a humid state...lol....but you are on the go so much you don't really have to worry about not being able to do extra working out....you will actually probably lose weight even on DxDP , we both lost about 10lbs that week..and it honestly felt like all we did was eat...lol...I say GO, EAT and be HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This. I don't find "all the walking at Disney" to be much of a workout compared to what I am used to. And, it is rarely done at an aerobic pace (unless running for a bus!) Now, if you are not very active otherwise, I can see how you'd burn those calories.

I always used to lose weight at WDW, but that was because my "regular life" had basically no exercise. Now that I'm running a 2-4 miles most days, I gain a little at WDW. That seems consistent with most others' experiences---the more active you are in "regular life", the more likely you will be to gain a bit at WDW.

That said, I would still go and have a good time. Be reasonably sensible, but enjoy a few of the World's more decadent pursuits, but be sure to get back on track when you get back home.

I gained a few pounds over the week, but I think some of it was water retention. We walked a ton, but I am very active, so I don't think it did much for me.

Honestly, I don't think I'd have gained much at all, but I gave myself carte blanche all week. I had several pig out moments, LOL. I think with just some portion control and good sense you should be able to maintain.

And not to be all preachy or annoying, but even if you gain a pound or two--hey, it's life, and sometimes the scale will go up a bit. (Trust me, though, I have to take that advice myself, and it's not always easy!) If that happens, try not to get down on yourself! 35 pounds is a fantastic loss and i'm sure when you get home you'll get back into your routine and if you have any more weight to lose, you will do it.

have a great time!!!

:cool1:Congrats on your weight loss and your up coming trip. I personally know your struggle and you should be very proud of yourself. On our recent trip I ate what I wanted and only gained 2 pounds which was water weight and after a few days at home I was back to my regular weight. We also were on the deluxe dining plan and I ate, but never stuffed myself. What with all the walking and the sweating it worked out well. Also I never drink soda. Mainly I don't like it and it has a ton of sugar in it. So I stick to water and I know that helps me. Go and enjoy yourself and keep up the good work.

I tend to gain about a pound a day. I walk tons and am very gung ho, go-go-go when I am there. It is because I have been dieting so much on and off in my life that if I am not on a calorie counting regimen I gain. My body is used to few calories...

Congrats on your weight loss !! :cool1: When we went last Sept, my DH and I were both on Weight Watchers. We also did the deluxe dining plan. Oddly enough, neither one of us gained any weight at Disney....although it felt like we must have ! :lmao:

We were pretty careful about what we chose to eat. ( we didn't count points or anything like that) but we did limit bread intake. We stuck w/ proteins / veggies / fruit for our meals. ( on the buffets, it's VERY easy to eat healthy) We also tried to stay away (limit) fried food. Mostly because when it's hot, it just makes you feel gross. But, we DID eat dessert every night and sometimes we got a snack during the day....

but we walked our butts off !! So I think that helped..... but we didn't deny ourselves anything that we wanted... it's vacation afterall !! You have the rest of your life to get rid of the 1 or 2 lbs you MIGHT gain by having fun. to me, it's worth it !!! :woohoo:

This is me too. I exercise more at home than I get from all of that walking at WDW (at least for us, we aren't walking fast enough to get our heart rate up so it's more of an activity rather than a cardio workout). I generally gain 7 pounds while at WDW. We no longer do the dining plan because it's just too much dessert.

Eat what you want, it is just a week. You can go back to your healthy lifestyle when you get back. Disney World is a special time, treat yourself!

Thanks all for the great tips!!! Feeling better that I'm not seeing crazy weight gains, and feeling less guilty about wanting to eat the junk food I like all week :rotfl:

The most weight I've "gained" over a week's stay was 9 lbs. I say "gained" because 9 lbs equates to about 30,000 extra calories - which I didn't do. But Disney most food is very high in sodium, which will cause water retention. So don't freak out if you come home heavier on the scale. Give yourself a couple of days for your real number.

Unfortunately for me, that 9 lbs was still 4 or 5 after a couple days of normalcy at home.
