How much was your first house?

Mine, $101,000 in 1983
House my parents had when I was born, $2,500. Bought in 1950. 1 bedroom, 1 bath on 5 acres. They added on 2 bedrooms and a second bath, and sold it for $39,000 in 1960.
Next hour, $29,500 in 1960, I sold it 53 years later for $556,000.

We've only bought one house, $35,000 in 2001. It was a good deal. We had been living in it 5 years though and done a lot of labor on improvements for the owner by then.

We only bought one house as well. $150,000 in 2009. Sold 2 years ago for not much more. We’re currently priced out of the market again and makes sense for us to have career mobility. Miss owning a home though.

#1 was $80k in 2007, it was a upper/lower duplex with detached 3 car garage.

#2 was $24k foreclosure in the city near a college in 2009, 3 bedroom bungalow. We did not live in this one. What was cool about that house was it was originally a working dairy (one of if not the oldest one in the city), the detached garage was taller than the house and was originally the cow barn, and the back of the house had a very large concrete room attached with milking bays in it and big sliding barn doors on the side, an old walk-in fridge, and drains in the floor. We rented it to college students so as you can imagine they used that as a party room. It was a neat house but every semester we had to fix so much stuff, it was regularly trashed.

#3 $77k, 3 bedroom foreclosed ranch just 6 blocks away from the first house in 2010. We had outgrown the lower unit in house #1 after our first child so fixed this one up and rented the other fully.

#4 $160k, started out as a 3 bedroom rancher on 2 acres with riparian rights to the creek on property, in 2012. Since purchase, gutted, added a 2nd story, etc. Spent more on this house than all 3 of the last ones combined but we will be staying put here for the foreseeable future (we think.... lol).

Holy crap! That's amazing. You can't buy a lot for that around me and I don't think you would have been able to in 2001 either... so jealous! What part of the country are you in, if that's not too intrusive?

First house was like 410k in 2003. Housing in the Nashville area is expensive. It's ridiculous. We're not San Fran or NYC!

IIRC, my parents paid my grandparents $30,000 for their house with 21 acres in the early 60’s. House was over 100 years old.

I gave $36,500 for a mobile home on 7.4 acres in 1994, then ~$130,000 to have the current house built on that property in 2000.

Our first/starter home was $155,000 in 1998.
Sold it in 2005 for $280,000.
Bought our second/current house in 2005 for $485,000.

Wow - you did great on that first house!
We were in a right place, right time scenario. A couple was relocating and wanted to sell fast, so we bought it well under value.
We did many big improvements to the house and yard. Also did a full basement reno with wet bar and entertainment area.

Well, the flip side of selling a house for more than you paid is the home you move TO probably appreciated similarly in the same timeframe LOL
You are correct! We purchased when prices were definitely rising.
Thankfully, our current area is very desirable. We will make money when we decide to downsize in a few years.

Oh, I know... it also depends SO much on location. If you're willing to commute and live in the 'burbs you can save yourself some money, but that certainly means some lifestyle trade-offs too; which works for some people and not for others. But all big choices in life are just deciding what makes YOU (and your family if you have one) happy and not worrying about the rest of it, eh?

One house so far purchased in 2001 for $225K
I hope my next one will be much less.

First house in 1994 for $64,500 sold in 2001 for $129,500. It was a 3 bedroom, 1 bath, full basement, 2 car detached, brick ranch in the city. Second house bought in 2001 was $174,500. 3 bedroom, 2 bath, full basement, 2 car attached, 2.2 acres in the country, vinyl sided home. Still living there.

1997 $170,000, worth about $400,000 now. My property taxes went from $4000 to $12,000.

Purchased first (and only) house in 2011 for 190,000. Thinking about selling and moving. We have about 18 months to decide. DS starts elementary school in 2 years and once he starts school we don't want to move.
