I was asked to tutor a 3rd grader in Reading and Math. She asked me what I charged, but I had no idea. I'm a college student who is getting ready to graduate in Decemeber with a degree in Business and Health Systems Administration (if that makes any difference). What should I charge for about 4 hours a week (Tues and Thurs) of tutoring a week?

Thanks! :sunny:

my DS had a grad student tutor him last year and he charged $10 an hour. We took him to the school library so there was no transportation to charge for.

Myy DD is going to have an hour of math tutoring a week this year. It's $30.00 an hour - we are splitting it with another family. But she's an experienced elementary school teacher, so I'd think $20.00 was more in line for you.

I was shocked to hear that the going rate around here is $40 -$60 for a tutor. A lady at the hair salon on Thursday said she is paying $40 for her high school sophomore daughter to get tutored. She found people charging up to $60!

I don't really think that's all that high depending on the type of tutor. My mom is a retired teacher but when she was teaching she was a reading specialist. She worked with elementary school students who could not read at all and got them reading at grade level. For something like that from someone with advanced degrees and years of experience I don't think $40-60 is that bad. Now for a college student to ask that price is crazy, I think $20 is about right.

I pay $22 CA for an hour of grade 1/2 tutoring. She is an Educational Assistant. However, the going rate for a teacher is $40.

Thanks for all the replies. Some are a lot higher than I expected though. I don't want to feel like I'm ripping this lady off, but I don't want to undercharge either. Hmmm...decisions, decisons. :)

$60.00 per hour here. My dd gets tutored 1x a week by a teacher in her school.

I worked for a tutoring company for a few months a few years ago when I was pregnant with my first child. The parents paid $30/hour, regardless of what type of tutoring it was. I tutored a high school junior in chemistry and algebra II, and I taught English and math to a homeschooled 8th grader whose mom didn't feel like she could teach those subjects.

At the Learning Center that my boys attend for tutoring, the rates are $30 per person for group lessons, and $50 per person (per hour) for individual lessons.

I charge $40/hr. I have an honours degree in math and am a high school math teacher.

DD will be tutoring Spanish and English Composition(not what it's called these days-my age is showing) this year and the college is paying her $16/hr.

Our local high school math teacher charged $30 per hour this summer.

It depends I usually charge around $40 an hour. I've tutored Pre-Algebra, and Algebra at the Jr High Level. This year I'm going to be tutoring High School Accounting and Algebra. I have a BS in Accounting, an MBA, and a CPA liscense.

But just like a teacher, usually when I tutor my time spent preparing for the student is just as much as the time spent with the student. I don't charge for my prep time. I also usually need to buy a copy of the textbook so I can keep a couple of lessons ahead of the students and prepare for what is coming ahead.

I also way more times than I count run over my hour of tutoring time explaining missed homework answers and quizzing for upcoming tests. I just charge for the hour.
