How much time do you spend in the cabin?

At WDW, we use our room for the 3 S's. We rarely stay in the room for any other reason. If we are not doing one of those, we are off exploring or doing something else. For me, $ is the most important thing. I would book an inside stateroom simply because it is the cheapest. If I am awake, I would rather be out exploring parts of the ship or enjoying activities.

Are there people that just go and relax in the cabin?

Which 3 S's? Chris Rock's?

Yes, people do relax in their cabins, especially if they have a verandah.

We've been on 2 disney cruises and have booked the secret porthole room on the Wonder both times. We don't spend much time in the room. The next cruise we have booked is on the Dream and we booked an aft balcony since they're actually cheaper than a regular balcony. It wasn't much more than an oceanview when we booked, so we decided to splurge. I will be making a point to spend time on that balcony!! We might find we miss stuff by forcing ourselves to use the balcony, then we will likely go back to oceanview. I've never stayed in a true inside cabin...I need a little outside light.

Yep, we spent a fair amount of time on the cabin/on the verandah in the last two cruises. One of those was to Alaska, so we saw some of Tracy Arm, whale watched, etc. from our cabin. On the second one, our kids (twins who are starting to get too old for the Club/Lab but not old enough for Edge) preferred staying in room vs going to club/lab when we had nice adult dinners (Palo/.Remy) or otherwise wanted adult time in a club, adults only show, etc.

My parents spent the entire cruise on their verandah when they went, reading books. Even while in port.

So, yes.

Lots for me. I prefer to read my books and lie in the sun on the verandah. We had the hugest aft verandah last cruise, I think I spent half the time on it! Less for DH - he takes naps here and there but mostly is in the adult section. The kids are rarely in the room, just for sleep.

Thanks for the info. This may not sound nice, it is not intended to be mean. The cruises I am looking at are ~$6,000 for 3 of us. If I am spending that much money, I don't plan on sitting in the sun reading (if you get the meaning). I can do that at home on my deck for free. That is kind of the same thing we do when we go to WDW. We get out to enjoy the parks, play the pool games, enjoy everything they have to offer.

We got a veranda for our cruises because I tend to wake up around dawn. I sit out, watch the sun come up and wait for hubby to wake up. We watched all of our dockings and departures. We didn't spend a lot of time in the room but the veranda was nice and we tended to run back down for little reasons, because it was just a quick jaunt.

You are 100% the same in the way we travel!! I am PAYING to be doing things and seeing things. I will rest and relax when I get home. :) So with that...we were on the 15 day WBPC cruise, so LOTS of time and honestly, aside from sleeping, showering, etc. We spent every waking moment out doing activities, at character greets, etc. One evening, we sat on the deck to watch the sun go down because I wanted to say I did it...

Now...we planned to sail in an inside room for cost saving measures (and have sailed balcony on other lines)...but it worked out that a midship oceanview was available for cheap. So we booked it. I can say that I am so thankful for the porthole. Because we are so go, go, go...I would have felt very trapped in an inside room while I waited for my family to all be ready to go to wherever. It was nice to sit and look at the window as we cruised along and watch the dolphins play in the wake, or see the port as we pulled in at the crack of dawn. We maybe spent an hour total in the room just having down time per day, tops, on average. I feel that a balcony would have been an absolute waste. I enjoy people watching and being part of the action. I would consider a balcony on an Alaska cruise simply because you can go in and out easily if its cold and not fight for rail space all day.

I'm wondering too. At WDW, we are out at daybreak and don't come back until we are exhausted...bedtime. I would have gone with an inside room if the price hadn't been cheaper for the GTY. I'm not sure we will be in the room much if it is anything like WDW! I did worry about being claustrophobic on a ship so long or if I was sick and stuck in the room!

But to answer your original question, there are definitely people who do not mind spending "a lot" of money simply to be in a peaceful environment and read books for a week. I am a travel planner and this blew my mind when I first went in to the industry. I could not comprehend why someone would pay a small fortune for a fancy resort or whatever and then just hang out in their room/balcony/patio for a week. I wondered, why don't they just do this at home...you are spending money for amenities, get your money's worth. But I realized that I valued activities and amenities and others valued peace, quiet, tranquility, being in a new place/view from their lounge chair and they felt they got their money's worth because they came home relaxed and well rested.

I use the room for the 5 things that start with the letter S. So a inside is fine with me. What are your 3 things that start with letter S. My five are sleep shower shave sex and going number 2.
You have all 3 of mine. I was keeping 2 of them out of it because there may be G-rated readers.

I think we use our time differently. My family is just less commando. When we do Disney (mostly AKL or Ft Wilderness) at least half the day (if not more) is spent at the resort. I wanted to ask the question here how could I ever give up the verandah but I can see if you are just never in your room and go from activity to activity it would make sense. The rooms are always a home base for me and I venture out for specific things more sparingly.

If you have a little extra $$ I suggest maybe booking a cabin with a porthole. The inside cabins are a little dark. It's nice to have some natural light.

We book verandah for a variety of reasons and have gradually spent more and more time in them for each cruise we have taken. :)

1. The first cruise was all about going to the Sail Away party (and being crushed together like sardines) While this experience is really promoted and enjoyed by thousands every cruise, my walk away impression was "One and done" :) Loved the party like atmosphere at first, but after the first few elbows to my chest and some foot tramples in my sandals, I was sort of underwhelmed. I was thrilled when my husband and kids said they wanted to go back to our verandah and wave from the balcony. (Okay, I might have suggested it with lots of emphasis)
2. I like people, I really do. But on sea days when there is next to no space on the pool deck, or even the adult areas, I actually prefer spending quiet time on my verandah and GASP, reading. (I know...boring right?) Sometimes hubby and I will go up to SF for some drinks while the kids are in the clubs. And sometimes, we stay in the cabin for some *ahem* quiet adult activity time.
3. We book verandah for the sunsets (I am not so much into the sunrises...I am admittedly a night owl so mornings annoy me)
And though I love watching docking procedures at our various ports of call, I really detest pulling up to the dock at Port Canaveral.
4. Falling asleep and waking to the sound of the wind and waves as well as the breeze on sea days is priceless to us. The best sound machine money can buy. :)
5. We still spend time on deck and enjoy all the amenities that we choose to, like the Detective agency, the pools and Aquaduck, the mini golf, etc. And the hubby and I enjoy having some quiet time in the bars after dinner for a drink or two. We don't feel like we have to spend every waking minute in our cabin, but certainly enjoy the times that we do.
6, It is a very nice experience to be able to step out on deck with a book or a camera and relax while the the rest of the group is showering and getting ready for dinner or movies. And while the cabins on Disney ships are bigger, they are still cabins made for 4 people.

These are a few of our reasons. :)

We spend a lot of time in the cabin and always book a veranda. Although we enjoy the MDR and the shows, we aren't club people so we don't hang out at the bars at night. We also don't like karaoke, trivia, bingo, or any of the interactive experience. We also prefer to relax on our veranda vs. sitting on the pool deck or deck 4. I guess we are just introverted and don't like interacting with strangers all day long! But we are the very same way at WDW. We only stay at the parks about 6 hours a day and spend the rest of our time at the resort. Different strokes for different folks.
