I work at a job where I have a set outfit I wear everyday. I just have to provide black pants and shoes which of course after all these years I have plenty of. So if I am interviewing with a different company- a women's clothing store-how much more money would I need to make to make it worth leaving? The clothes are pretty expensive I think he said the average price was $65 but you do get a 40% discount.I currently hardly ever buy myself any clothes and if I do it's at Kohl's!

I'm a little confused? Are you required to buy these clothes to wear to the new job?

Personally, I think if you think you'd be happier at the new job, and making more to boot, then it's probably a good move. Esp. if you'd get commission on selling the expensive items. However, if you are going to be required to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe, you may want to make sure you'll be able to make up what you spend on the clothes with the extra earnings and be sure you'll enjoy the job before you spend too much.

They don't require you to wear their clothes but I don't really have any clothes right now which would be suitable. I am not unhappy at all where I am now but if the money is right..................

When I got my 1st job that required a lot of business type clothing, I went to a really nice 2nd hand shop to get me started. Full suits were $20 and one was imported from Italy that I'd gotten there. Most looked brand new. It might be a way to save initially and help get you started. That's IF you have a nice shop in your area.

I don't know what you'd want to budget in for clothing though. I'm sure the answer to that question would be different with everyone who responds. Look at the jeans thread. There is no consensus on what people are willing to pay for a pair of jeans.

Good luck with your decision.

As a young, newly promoted manager, I did this. Even if you get a line on an out of town upscale consignment or 2nd hand shop, make the trip. Phone ahead to ask if they carry yr size, if they're not busy & cool, they might even give you a heads up on a few worthy items--be sure to let them know busines attire-conservative, Middle of the road etc See if you can leave yr name & number to have them phone you should they take in a garment which fills yr criteria
Also, check out seperates, color coordinate blouses, skirts, pants, vests, blazers & accessories. For a 5 day week you will need much less than you think-Really, it's all color coordination, accessorizing. I started out with 3 skirts, 3 blouses, 2 jackets a couple of scarves & big silk flowers, & a big drawer of yardsale jewelry & one pair of shoes ;) You can even buy cheap shoe clips!
Best of Luck!

Well I probably would buy their clothes. I have worked retail long enough to realize it helps to wear the product. I just don't know how much money is worth leaving my current job over. Like I said not unhappy-but could be happier with more $$$$$$!
