How much luggage is allowed and where do you put it?

Okay, another dumb first cruise question. We normally take 4 large suitcases and 2 carrryons with us to WDW. We will be going to WDW for 6 days and then on the cruise so I imagine we will have this much luggage with us. How much luggage is allowed on the cruise and is there a place in your room to store 4 large suitcases so they are not in the way? We are in a Cat 6 and we are family of 4.

4 bags for 4 people is not unresonable. Best storage tip I found was to put them under the bed. The queen size bed is really two twins pushed together. Each side lifts up and you can easily store the luggage there. We've done it on our last 3 cruises (didn't know about it on our first).

WDWLVR.... Are you saying that 4 bags for 4 people is unreasonable because I won't need that much stuff or because they won't allow it or there won't be room? The reason I will be taking that much stuff is that I will be going to WDW before the trip and I always bring that much. I have 2 small kids and I always bring, liquid motrin, tylenol, dimetabb and a bunch of stuff I need for the kids. Anyway, even though we stay at a DVC resort and I will do laundry before we go on the cruise, I still will need that much luggage as long as the DCL allows it and there is a place to put it.

Sorry about that. What I meant to say (and what I have now fixed) is that it was NOT unreasonable. Just didn't proof what I was saying.

It is just DH and I and we are bringing 2 garment bags, a rollaway and two carry-ons. So I think what you are brining is fine.

Sorry again for the confusion.

You are allowed 2 pieces of luggage and 1 carry on per person. When we went in March, for the 4 of us, we had 8 pieces of luggage and 4 carry ons. We determined after being on the cruise that we had way too much stuff. Next time we will not take as many clothes. Of course our teenage daughter had as much stuff as the other 3 put together. You can have you clothes laundered (sp?), which we felt was not to unreasonable, or you can wash them yourself. Luckily we were staying in a 1 bedroom suite so we had plenty of room for all the suitcases. I am not sure what we would have done if we were in a smaller cabin.:)

Be sure to check with your airline, they are all now restricking the size and weight of you suitcase. I had to leave home 1 suitcase that I normally use, it was to big and might of been to heavy once packed.

We had a cat. 6 on the Magic and if your suitcases don't fit under the bed (most do), you can store them on your balcony.

We have fat suitcases. They're not huge, but they are fat, and because of the style, when opened they are only a little bit thinner. They would not fit under the bed, opened or closed. The only luggage we could fit under the bed was a big hard-sided suitcase (opened) and our garment bag. We put duffel bags inside the open suitcase. The other suitcases had to be stowed in our closet and under the desk. They were in the way the whole week. Grrrr...

The problem is that the beds are not that far off the floor. Sure, we could lift the frame and slide our suitcases underneath, but then the weight of the bed was supported by the suitcases! Not a good idea.

Just thought I'd put out a warning that you might run into this problem too. If anyone has a good guess as to the number of inches between the floor and bed frame, that would be helpful!

We are a family of 5 and lately when we cruise we get two Cat 9's because the teens are bigger and older and they want their space and we want ours. I let them each take one large suitcase...whatever they can fit into it is fine as long as it is one suitcase.

This time for our upcoming cruise I told them to make sure their were not too heavy because I was reading Delta's luggage info and they allow less weight than Continental did. I do not want to be hit with overweight bag charges!!

We put all of our luggage under the bed. We had a large American tourister that is about 12" deep that we had to slightly lift the bed to get it under. An extra deep suitcase probably would not fit. There is room in the closet to set suitcases also.

Terry S - we cruised with two DSs 7 and 8 at the time and DW likes to take all of the medicines, etc. Many folks here suggested taking a shoe holder - the kind that hooks on the top of thhe door and has 12-24 pockets for holding shoes. Put it up on your bathroom door in your cabin and use it to hodl the Motrin, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc. - Keeps the counter clear and on the off chance that you do have some rough waters, keeps things from falling/rolling around.

We had to fairly large suitcases, camera bag and back pack. We stowed one suitcase in the closet and one along the wall by the closet. Didn't think about putting them out on the veranda.

Enjoy!

We almost always use duffle bags rather than suitcases -- easier to store both at home and away. Additionally, they're cheap to buy and can be thrown into the washing machine. I love the ones from Lands End.

DIfferent question: Someone said that the queen sized beds are really two twins pushed together. Wouldn't that make the bed a king? Or are the twin beds smaller than normal?

There are shelves in the closet, but that is where they store the life vests.

On our recent 4 day cruise we had 6 people and 4 suitcases. DD 7 and DS 10 shared one suitcase and DD and friend both 14 shared one suitcase, DH and I each had our own suitcase. We put one under the bed and one on the verandah. The two 14 yr olds put theirs on the veranhdah also. My carryon went in the closet and 3 backpack went under the desk.

I could have probably gotten away with one less suitcase if I hadn't packed so many clothes.

MrsPete - Disney has always referred to them as Queen beds and to be honest they don't seem as large as my King at home.

From the Disney site: Queen-sized bed or two twin beds

Hope this helps.

Hi mmouse38!

I do not want to be hit with overweight bag charges!!

If an airline can charge someone for "an overweight bag," I'm glad I'm divorced...

Hi 4407mark.

Didn't think about putting them out on the veranda.

Me either.

Yes, on the far side of your verandah...
= in the Caribbean...

Thanks everyone for your answers and suggestions. I don't think I would have every thought of putting them under the bed or on the verandah. I think I would worry about them somehow flying off the verandah, okay now that does sound kind of stupid when I type it, its not like the ship does 100 mph and the luggage would just lift off, but just the same, I never would have thought of it, thanks again!

Also, like the idea of the shoe rack for bathroom stuff, I wouldn't even have thought of the fact that there wasn't much counter space or that the stuff could move around. I think I need to spend some major time reading posts on this board.

I don't think this is the case with most normal sized suitcases!! We had to lift the bed slightly because the frame has a lip around the outside. Once you got past this (by lifting the bed) there was plenty of clearance for our suitcases.

Something to think about when deciding on luggage - choose less deep suitcases so that they will fit under the bed. Bring 5 instead of 4. Take a thinner bag that will fit inside another. pack a rolling duffle for non-clothing items for the whole family. Anything to help cut down on the number of big suitcases you have to store!!

What we did for the 3 of us was bring 2 medium suitcases, a rolling duffle and a smaller rolling carry on type of thing. The smallest rolling bag went inside a suitcase and under the bed, as did the duffle. The other suitcase also went under the bed, but we used it for storage of bulky stuff.

One more thing. :) We did a week at Disney before our cruise & left as much stuff as possible in our car at the port. I don't know if this is an option for you, but it was great to bring only what we needed!

Duh. Sorry - not enough sleep and too long until the next Wonder. Don't think DW would want me storing them on "the far side"
