How Much for Your Child's HS Cap and Gown?

To piggyback on this, where does your high school hold the graduations? Our school use to hold it at the Tampa Convention Center, but later moved to the USF Sun Dome (cheaper venue). Each grad does receive a limited amount of tickets as well due to not enough seats for everyone.

Most of the schools in our area use the same downtown theater/auditorium. Since DDs class is smaller, they each get 10 tickets. Other schools where there are more grads get a lot fewer tickets per person. We don't need 10 tickets, so we'll give away the extras to anyone who needs them, if there is anyone!

That's part of what gets me - DDs school is public. It is a magnet school, so it draws a wide cross section of the community. My daughter says many of her friends are freaking out over the cost. We can afford it, but there are lots of families out there who need that $60 for basic expenses. I've contacted the principal because after some Googling I found High Schools in California are supposed to provide loaner caps and gowns to any student who doesn't want to buy one. But there's been no mention of that to the students. Schools in this area are just now being called on the carpet about that - I suspect her school hasn't faced the music on it yet. Instead they choose to sell the kids out to Josten's, who gives the school a kick back. The current principal is really bad in that regard - he's all about the money. He came from a middle school in the wealthiest part of town a couple of years ago, and just can't seem to shake that "make 'em pay" mentality.

And our year book is $75 :crazy2: but that's optional and kids can skip it if they can't afford it.

Our yearbook starts at 75 and that's if you buy it in August. As each month goes by the price goes up until March 31st which is the last month to order it. I believe it was at 120 by then.

Yearbook ads for a 1/4 page for seniors are 125.00 this year. They were only 75 when my son graduated in 2014. Since we did one for our son, I had to do one for our daughter too. Talk about highway robbery. Ugh. I had to finalize it by last Friday so I did that. There are no refunds if you didn't get it turned in on time.

I'm not sure what our cap and gown cost is yet. I know we had to buy them when my son graduated in 2014 but I don't remember it being too bad. Of course he lost the graduation year charm that goes on the tassel when he threw it into the air after graduation. We have the cap, tassel and his graduation picture in his cap and gown framed. He actually took that with him to college and displays it in his bedroom.

We use a county owned arena - its bench seating (its main purpose is hockey) and its first come first served on seating - so you can bring 92 people, but they'll have to sit in uncomfortable bench seats for an hour - which tends to limit the amount of interest in graduation that you get. (We also keep the ceremony really short - one student speaker, one teacher speaker, then 400 names are called and they walk across and pick up their dipolma and they are done).

Herff Jones was the provider. We had to buy for around $50.
They had packages of other things like t shirts, fancy address labels, etc. We declined on everything except the cap/gown.

Our son wouldn't have even done that if he didn't have to.
