How much does the tooth fairy leave your kids for a tooth?

My ds told me that someone in his class lost a molar and got $20! (or was it $30?) There is no way we could (or would want to) give each child that much money every time they lose a tooth. Now, I don't have any problem doing my own thing and not worrying about what the other families choose to do, but how on earth do I explain to my own kids WHY the toothfairy gives so much to some kids and much less to others?

DD just lost 3 in a week and a half!! We give 5 for the top front teeth....and 3 each for the other teeth.

DD got $5 for her first lost tooth. Now it is $1 per....good thing...she just pulled her top one!

$1 or $2 - maybe $5 for a molar, since they're a little tougher :)

But no WAY $20!

Our tooth fairy leaves $3 for the first tooth lost ever and then $1 a tooth thereafter. Our toothfairy generaly leaves silver dollars (if she can find them).

The question of why some kids got more than others came up....also the question of why she got a paper dollar when a tooth was lost at a girl scout campout.

Our explanation: "We really don't know honey. We can only assume that there must be more than one tooth fairy. Different ones for different neighborhoods or something. It's something we've always wondered about too and this is the only explanation we can think of that makes any sense. More than one fairy"

Anyway, she (and now he) bought it hook line and sinker. I think saying that we really didn't know either but this was what we thought it must be is what really sold them.

Good Luck!

$5 for the first one, and $1 for the rest.

It's been a while...my kids are 21 and 19...but I think the toothfairy left $5 for the first tooth and $1 for each one after that. I used to get a quarter!

Most of the children at the daycare I work at get $1 it seems.

$5 for the first tooth and LOTS of change for the rest.
We make the change into a math session each time and
count it in all different ways.

One dollar a tooth. Maybe a little bit more for the molars if it took a long time to come out.

One dollar per tooth.....unless one is lost on vacation.....so DS was once visited by the Disney tooth fairy and got 5 Disney dollars.......and DD was once visited by the Canadian tooth fairy and got 5 Canadian dollars.

Depends on how hard the tooth was to get out and how hard the child worked to get it out in a timely manner. Can you tell my kids didn't like to pull teeth? I think $5 was probably the most ever left and usually $1 to $3.

We explained the difference in $ left from one house to the next by saying that it probably depended on how many people lost teeth in a given night. For example, if there were lots of lost teeth, the fairy wouldn't have as much money to go around as on a night when not many people lost teeth. We also explained that the fairy knew how hard the child worked to get the tooth out and that probably had a bearing.

Oh, that's a GREAT explanation, MerryPoppins! I think I will use that one.
