How much do you tip Mousekeeping?

I leave it daily and I enjoy making up special envelopes for each day...at Halloween time, I made special Halloween versions and at Christmas time I made special Christmas ones!

Here's where I print them from but I made the Halloween (and Grinch) ones myself with some clipart I found.

Thanks for the envelope link! Those are adorable! I couldn't get the Mickey mouse one to work but all the rest are awesome!

I usually check with the hotel about the policy on tipping.. and even if they say not to I try to leave a few dollars with a note telling the housekeeper that I'd like them to keep the money..

I think $1/per person per day is fine.. as long as you're not making a ridiculous mess, that is. :)

Please don't feel like you have to explain yourself. This is a personal thing. Tip if you want to and don't tip if you don't want to and tip whatever amount you want to!

Some have never heard of tipping housekeepers and some grew up always tipping housekeepers. It's a matter of opinion.

Do whatever you want to do. The OP just wanted an idea of what others tip.

No one is right and no one is wrong.

Well said.

I didn't know about tipping housekeeping until I was an adult. My family growing up never did and I don't think they ever really thought about it. Well anyway I tip now. I made up my own Mousekeeping envelopes and for these last couple weeks before the trip I have just been putting in the singles I have at the end of the day. This way I am not digging into my shopping money :cool1: and all I have to do is set the envelope out each day.

I love the preprinted env. idea. Very cute. We tip at the end of our stay for private villa rentals where we have a few dedicated people for the entire visit. I tend to tip at the end of the shorter hotel trips. But I had never put much thought into it before this thread. So daily it will be.

Do you also tip if you request extra pillows or something from housekeeping?

I tip at every level of hotel we stay at- which is many with DD's hockey.

In my opinion anyone who is willing to scrub a toilet after strangers :earseek: needs a few bucks to put a smile back on their face. :flower:

Again, not to invite heated discussions (and not talking about WDW resorts), you'd be surprised at some of the Best Westerns-full spa/sauna, whirlpool suites, continental breakfasts and a formal restaurant open only for dinners etc. You'd also be surprised at what some of these people are paid-they consider housekeeping a part-time position (most don't work a 40 hour week-not by choice) so they are paid part-time minimum wage and no benefits. And some of the stuff/mess people leave behind would be enough to scare a seasoned paramedic :earseek: IMHO they should get danger pay.

Here's to the housekeepers-they have my gratitude!

As a business traveler, if I am going to be in a room for more than one night, I tip the chambermaid $5 per day. I leave it on my pillow, and more often than not I've gotten a "thank you" written on the notepad. Additionally when staying at a place such as a Hampton or similar, you just may find that the $5 gratuity leads to extra bottles of water, cookies, or snacks somehow being left in your room... I'm saying thanks for your hard work, they're saying thanks for noticing. ;)

When traveling with my DW (who somehow manages to use more towels than anyone would think possible), I'll occasionally add a bit more to thank them for keeping her "in stock."

Now as far as Holiday In Express having pre-made envelopes -- Ugh, I am soooooo against that. I don't think it's cute, I find it completely tacky. Based upon the last HIE I stayed in just three weeks ago, I think they should worry more about cleaning the mildew out of the shower than having their hand out looking for a gratuity.

My comment about the cute envelopes was in reference to Heidi's cute Disney ones that she made, not the obnoxious things supplied by a hotel begging for tips.

My apologies if I wasn't clear -- custom thank you envelopes are indeed a wonderful touch, mass produced "we want a tip" envelopes are not...

Well I hate to tell you but I have ran into hotel supplied tip envelopes at the Drake hotel in NYC and the Royal Hawaiian in Oahu. Not your HI by any means! LOL!

We are 2 adults and 2 children and VERY tidy... my DP will not rest peacefully until every single thing is in its place, trash gathered and bag tied and set by the door even. We tip at every hotel, usually $5 a night, but there have been times/service that we tipped more. :confused3 I don't necessarily thing it is expected...perhaps that is why it is a nice gesture... a real thank you that stands out.

Another vote for a buck a person - I'm a stickler about straightening up before we leave the room, so I figure that's plenty. Now, if we do happen to leave it in a total mess - I up the ante a bit.;)

I never knew you were supposed to tip the maids until reading these boards.

Does anyone actually know how much an hour the housekeeping staff makes at WDW resorts? I was curious about that.......

You're not "supposed" to. They're not tipped personnel. Some people tip (if they can get them to take the tip) which is okay. But I don't like the claims that tippers get special treatment. You're supposed to get top notch mousekeeping REGARDLESS.

Does anyone actually know how much an hour the housekeeping staff makes at WDW resorts?

They're unionized with benefits and start around $11 an hour. It's not slave labor by any means.

Wow-$11 and hour is very good for cleaning rooms!!

$11/hour + $5 EACH room for tips=pretty nice job!!!
