How much do you tip Mousekeeping?

Per day, especially on lengthy stays, because you never know what kind of schedule people work. I have issues with the idea of tipping one person $16 for two days work, when someone else may have done it for the previous six. I usually stay solo, but I tip $2/night because I'm not always that tidy.

I also tip housekeeping at every hotel I stay at. I got in the habit after working at the front desk of a hotel in a major tourist area.

Getting tip envelopes ready is something that is great to do in advance. I didn't make fancy Disney labels - just pretty ones off my computer. There is a special incentive program at work that gives me $50 cash a month. One month- a long time before our trip - I used that for tip money and loaded the envelopes. One less thing to do right before your trip. I certainly wouldn't wait and try to come up with tip money every morning before you leave the room...too much other stuff going on.

We stayed at All Star Sports. We left a tip, but didn't leave a note with it so we found it nicely placed on the table. Another couple times we came back to the room mid-afternoon and housekeeping had not been, so when she came to the door we just took some fresh towels and my DH tried to give her a tip and she would not take it. Only after we left it with a note did housekeeping take the tip. I have heard of people making up envelopes ahead of time--I think that would have been a good idea.


We always leave a tip anywhere we stay.

Interesting...I've been giving these a lot of thought, because we never tip at anyother hotel unless we use valet or a bellhop. Hmmmmm...Don't want to not tip if everyone else does, but (don't want to get flamed here) I was not aware this was normal practice anywhere other than Disney.

Our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids) tips $5 / day. If we have a special request we usually give $2-$3 to the person(s) who fulfills the request.

I usually leave $2/day on the pillows as a tip. (Not trying to make them rich, just trying to let them know I thought about them.) Would maybe like to leave a little more, but just never seem to have enough extra money, almost always on a budget.

I admit to being a bit confused here, also. Does Disney encourage tipping the cleaning staff? Most places, cleaning staff (unlike waiters/waitresses) are paid a "full" wage and you're not expected to tip. Is this not the case at Disney, or are folks tipping just out of extra generosity?

When we stayed at POFQ I pre-prepared "Mousekeeping" envelopes per suggestions from this site. I used the $1 per person, per day rate and rounded it up to $5 for my family of 4.

Interesting story, we took a small, stuffed monkey that had been given to us by a church friend a wek before our trip so we could send pictures of the monkey's "travels." Second day at WDW and I left our mousekeeping envelope on the table and used the monkey as a paperweight as I had knocked the envelope off the table twice that morning. Came back in the afternoon and the envelope AND the monkey were gone! Mousekeeping must have thought they were getting a special gift that day. Kind of surprised at first, but being in a Disney mood I just let it go. Hopefully someone's child or grandchild is making a good home for the monkey now.

Tip per day as the keeper may change, good service = $5 and that is generally what we leave, we are very neat. Tip at all hotels, everywhere we go, always have. They are probably making minimum wage and having to clean up after people in a bathroom/bedroom - I respect the job they do, I couldn't do it.

Spent two weeks out west this summer, only glitch was in a small rural town they would not take the money, so on the last day I just left it with a note that said thanks. One trip had a case of gatorade we had not used, couldn't take on plane, so I left it with the tip.

My family went on many, many vacations when I was a teen and never once did I see my dad or mom leave money for housekeeping. Fastforward 15 years later to my DH and I going on vacation: I found $20 on a table as I was doing a room check before leaving and snatched it up. "Honey!" I admonished. "You almost left $20 behind! Geez, how did you miss that?" DH then informs me it's a tip for housekeeping. Huh?! Never heard of that before.

I have since learned the value of generosity and now leave tips whenever I stay somewhere. I never thought (and don't think my DH did either) of leaving it every day due to switching housekeepers every day. Good point! Thanks for the tip. (No pun intended. )

I always tip housekeeping by leaving $3-$5 on a pillow every day, whether I am by myself or not. I figure housekeeping is one of the most thankless jobs, so I'm more than happy to try to brighten their day.

We are going to do 2.00 a day... we do not mess up our room that much at all.. so I am doing good to do that.. this is my first time to tip housekeeping.. I never knew this before.... anyways.. I am glad this board informed me.. but my tip for 2 adults and a small child is 2.00.. only because we are on a tight tight budget...hope this don't offend anyone. Its better then leaving nothing.. I never knew to tip before.

Please don't feel like you have to explain yourself. This is a personal thing. Tip if you want to and don't tip if you don't want to and tip whatever amount you want to!

Some have never heard of tipping housekeepers and some grew up always tipping housekeepers. It's a matter of opinion.

Do whatever you want to do. The OP just wanted an idea of what others tip.

No one is right and no one is wrong.

Not to invite flames but why is it that WDW guests leave a tip (we do -$1/pers/night) but at another hotel chain you might not?

DD worked for Best Western and very rarely were the housekeepers tipped.

Two things here:

1. Best Western isn't a Hotel Chain, it's a Motel chain. I think if you look at most of the 5-star Hotels, people do tip their housekeeping staff (especially if they're getting dry cleaning done). This is also true for the 5-star resort Hotels.

2. I would tip differently at the Value than I do at the Deluxe. $1 per person per day in a Value is a much larger percentage of the room cost than it would be in a Deluxe. In the Deluxes, I give at least $5 per day for two adults.

We tip $2 to $5 a day. My mother always told me to tip housekeeping. I always thought it was one of the rules and I didn't even know that people didn't. I guess that's what I get for listening to my mom

Tipping is a funny thing. When I first met my DH he explained that at Christmas he tips the garbage men and the mailman. I never heard of that before, but why not? Maybe it will help keep our mail from being lost! Now we also tip our kids' teachers at preschool at Christmas and at the end of the school year. They get a small gift (candle), and a thank you note with $ in it. Believe me, it adds up and sometimes I think he's nuts, but he said, well they watch our kids all day and get paid peanuts, don't you think they deserve something extra? Yup!

I leave tips at all hotels, not just Disney resorts. I was in the Holiday Inn and Suites this summer and they even provide a tipping envelope.
