how much do you tip for cut and color ?

well with 2 friends who are great hairdresser/shop owners I am privvy to what the actual costs of their products are compared to what the charges are for the services i.e. a haircolor treatment. They also build into their cost a reasonable wage for their services. Tipping, as for ANY profession/job, is a courtesy, not a requirement. Wait staff is paid just over $3/hour. I know that that is not true for hairdressers. just mho. I don't want to see another tipping battle on the boards! lol

DD is a hairdresser (in another city, drat!) and says that an awful lot of customers don't tip at all, or else give her just a couple of dollars!
My own cut/color every six weeks is $90 and I tip $20. My stylist takes her time and really fusses over the color and cut so I think it is worth it.

When I get my hair cut and colored, I tip 20%.

I only go to places where 5 bucks IS about 20%, so that's about how much I tip. :)

I always tip at least 20%, whether I like it or not. I am a sucker that way :( . My current hairdressor just can't give me a good haircut. I don't know why I keep going to her.

Perhaps since you are a generous tipper even though you think she does a bad job, she thinks you LIKE her cuts, so she doesn't see a reason to change it up. Talk to her, tell her you don't like it. Or go elsewhere.

Hi!

I also have a similar question regarding my hairdresser - I have always given him 20% and have followed him 3 times over the years - I was actually his last client last week before he goes out on his own to his own salon. Now - the next time I see him how do I tip him? I was always told you don't tip the owner, but he has already told me how much he's invested in his new place done a lot of the wordwork, decorating, installing by himself, etc... so I know a tip would be appreciated - what would you do?

Thanks!

Melissa :)

When I went to a guy who owned his salon, he 100% refused tips. He would push your hands away, and not take the money. He would state that he owned the place and he priced his services correctly, and that he did not want a tip. Along with the fact that he is the ONLY hair guy I've ever seen who understood my hair and could cut it so it looked good straightened (which only he has ever been able to do well) or curly, air-dried or blown dry, I really liked him! :goodvibes

So if your guy is like that, he will refuse the tips. If he doesn't refuse, then you know you've got someone who isn't operating on that same bit of etiquette, and that he doesn't know how to price his services correctly, and you can figure out what you want to do from there.

I had a business, and I included the costs of running the business in my charge. No one ever gave me tips, and I would have refused them (though I did accept some hot chocolate mix once from some kids of a patient). Hair stylists who own their shops should price their services correctly, and not accept tips, IMO.

Just a question:Do you tip 20% when you eat out?Your server is with you maybe 10 minutes out of the time you are eating. With your stylist, you are with them about an hour and a half, sometimes longer.Isn't their time worth more? They have products, etc they still have to pay for and if you are tipping them $5 that pays for part of their product. They are there to make money, just like you are at your job.

I am a stylist and you would be amazed at how little we really are paid. The tips really help and it makes us happy. After a 9 hour day,on my feet the whole time,it is nice to be able to use my tip money to buy dinner on my way home for my family,as well as adding it to my Disney fund, bills, etc.

I do live in a smaller town.Granted,I did hair all over the country and this is by far the worst the worst tipping place I have worked.I only do it to get out of the house now.DH makes enough now that I don't need to work.I work part time and my whole check goes to Disney.Yeah.

I always tip $10 for a cut (costs 25)

I tip $20 for color/tips (costs 80),
DH freaks says I over pay, but looking here I think I am right in line.
She's a single mom working 6 days a week to feed her kids and I like her cuts and color!
My DS cut is usually 15 and he a/k/a MOM/me tips $5

Oh and girl that washes always gets $3 in her tip jar, is that in line???

i tip 15% when i eat out. every time. however the waiter/waitresses are making way below minimum wage so their salaries come from tips. Now my hairdresser gets 100% profit and i have been to the places where they buy the supplies and its pennies to what they charge for their service. her prices have also went up significantly within the last 3 years. (not saying every hairdresser gets all their profits). i also never miss a hair appointment which is about every 7 weeks. the way the economy is im sure people will start coloring their own hair instead of paying high prices. so do i feel bad? nope. i am a loyal customer and she gets a big amount per year from me. ;)

I tip $15 for a color and cut. $20 if it's highlights during the summer like now. I'm guessing for our area that is very generous. People here are hurting bad and not able to tip a lot. I would think if you were a good hairdresser/stylist that you would charge to cover costs associated with the job. Any tip would be above and beyond. IMO.

I always tip $3 for the wash, and $5 if she also has to wash out a glaze.

Wow, I guess I'm cheap! I pay $80 every six weeks for cut and color with the same hairdresser I've had since about 1989. I tip 15% which is $12.

Typically how much do you tip ? 20% ? This is of course assuming that you are happy with the service.

I am a 20%er for my hairstylist, another $5 for his assistant who shampoos me. 20% for my manicurist. Full price of service at Christmas. Expensive, yes! So worth it though, as I can always get in on a moments notice...my hairdresser even opened at 5:30a to fit me in before a trip.:)

My friend uses someone who comes to house to cut the kids. She says its $10 and you dont tip because its all profit when she comes to you. Kids are usually a few minutes so i think she has some kind of side thing going on. Its not the first i have heard of that.

I get foils and cut and i usually tip $20-$25....on a about $115. I wish i knew how to color.

i need to go get my hair done and have been putting it off. Why because its expensive so i go once evey 5 years. I have df cut my hair straight across. It long(to my waist) and curly. I got it cut last year in long layers and colored for the first time.
i was told he charged 25-35 for cut
65-85 for color

he also dried , flat ironed my and curled it. The cost was 140.00. I tipped him 20%
silly me didnt ask him to break it down for me. My ? is do they charge extra to dry, iron and curl hair? I'm thinking so. If he did then next visit should be cheaper if i just walk out with my hair wet.

Glad to see 20% is the amt to tip.

I tip 20% of whatever service I get (I round up to the nearest $) If I didn't like a service, my tip would reflect it (if I paid for it)and I wouldn't go back. Would you go out to eat and not tip the waitress properly?

Is this at a salon? I would just call and ask the price before you go. Most salons include the blowdry with the hair cut and it is the same price. Many times i left with hair wet because i am always in a rush and I have thick hair, but the price was always the same even with the wet hair.
