How much do you pay?

Negative, payed the sales tax, which is required when you purchase in state. Had I gone over to another state and bought it, then the cost of the first tag would have included the sales tax. Nope, just what we pay. I think my neighbors in Alabama are close to this price as well.

So you pay those fees every year?

I have always thought states that charged fees that high didn't have a sales tax and/or an income tax.

Next you are going to say you have to pay sales tax on food and clothing (we don't in PA).

yep, we do. 7% sales tax on everything, plus state income tax. having a smaller population and less tourism means you have to make up the money somewhere else. The fee will gradually decrease over the next...oh...15 years or so. I wonder what the cost of not having a tag on my TT costs...

Wow I would hate to have to pay fees like that every year. Tennessee is really hard to beat in my book as far as Taxes and fees go.

Our is somewhere around $45 a year plus inspection is $16. I live in VA. I also have to pay personal property taxes on it yearly. I think by my estimate that will be around $250-$300 a year but I may be over estimating it. It depends on what the city I live in thinks my camper is worth, I'm estimating on NADA value but the city usually thinks our vehicles are worth less.

In Ontario, Canada, we pay for the camper plate when purchased ($35 IIRC). No yearly fees after that. Vehicle plates are $75 per year, for the "sticker"

Just to maybe make you feel better I have a dream of building my own Tear Drop trailer starting with a Harbor Freight 4 x 8 utility trailer.

In order to register a "kit" trailer you have to jump through tons of hoops including getting it inspected and weighted by only certain number of certified inspectors. Its so cumbersome and expensive that HF stopped selling trailers in PA fro awhile because they were getting so many returns.

A work around is to register it in Maine as an out of state vehicle for like $20 and no other hoops. Then you just transfer the title to PA for a small fee.

I wonder how states that charge you by the value would set the fee for a home built trailer? There is no Blue Book for something like this.

. Lived in Alcoa, TN for about a year. As I remember it, vehicle tags were $35 and no inspection stickers. Have to agree with you on this one.

Those of you with the low tag fees, do you pay property tax as well? I'm thinking that the OP has that all wrapped up in the tag renewal fee, which is the way they worked it in MN back when we lived there (not sure how it is handled now of course), but here in CT the trailer is about $25 to the DMV, but we pay property taxes to our town for the trailer (like we do for our vehicles), and for our Gulfstream Visa 23BHD we paid about $155 this year.

In PA we don't pay property tax on our vehicles, the total yearly cost for my car is $36 plus we have to do a yearly inspection that runs around $60.

No property tax on vehicles or RV's in WI. We just pay the yearly sticker fee. I think the cars are $75yr and I know our trailer is $15yr

It is a common practice for buyers of very expensive RVs to pay to set up a LLC and a PO Box in Montana for about $800. No sales tax and zero property tax for those folks, and on a big rig that can be a huge savings depending on the state of residence (of course they sport Montana tags on the rig).

Tags are $105 per year for motorhome in Illinois, no personal property tax or vehicle inspections.

Explains why when I took the camper out on her maiden voyage, I saw a very nice RV with a Montana tag on it. Folks were from Pearl, MS. Now it makes sense...

Wow!! MS really socks it to ya on tags, eh?? I'm from LA and we paid very low tag fees also no property taxes on RV's or homes. In NC we pay approx. $35 for tags on our MH and $350 property taxes. Amazing a state next door would be so different :confused3 Also, chartle, we know a young couple that built one of those tear drop campers and you have basically sleeping room only - way too claustrophobic for us - good luck to you :goodvibes

Not really an issue, we are tenters that don't live in our tent, its just for sleeping.

Most teardropers call their trailers tents on wheels. :thumbsup2
