how much do WDW cakes cost?

I found a post from 2/26/2006 that IntheKnow made (click here). IntheKnow is extremely knowledgeable regarding cakes. Since their post pertains to the topic of wedding cakes, I thought I would re-post it here:

I know this all sounds very restrictive, but there are good reasons for the set procedures when ordering wedding cakes. Your EM is responsible for ordering your cake flavors and fillings, design choices, insuring the proper number of servings is ordered, and correct delivery and set up times. They update their order as changes are made, guest counts go up, or the need to switch delivery times and locations. Imagine the bride having to deal with all of this, while trying to enjoy her most important of days.

In addition, please also consider these points. Most often the bride is concerned with the cost of her cake, and the opportunity to save some money by bringing your own cake sounds very tempting. To adequately accomplish this, who ever is bringing the cake must worry about transporting it safely, keeping it refrigerated in the warm Florida climate, and the additional time needed to set all of this up, while they miss enjoying the day with the bride. If the cake is stored at your host hotel, you run the risk of accidental damage (someone bumps into it), accidental contamination (if the cake is not boxed), and mechanical failure of the cooling storage unit. This is not to say that these things will happen, but why take the chance? As the wedding cake is the centerpiece of the event, these concerns are quite valid. If you buy and bring your cake from outside Disney, your vendor will not assist you if there is a problem. Once you take the cake from their bakery, it's your baby. By going thru DFTW and ordering your cake from the GF or Y&B Bakery, you are guaranteed that your cake will be delivered safe, fresh, and beautiful, per your design specifications with enough cake to go around.

I have read other posts talking about the high cost of FTW cakes. Check out the latest issue of any bridal magazine, and see what some bakeries are charging for wedding cakes, especially in New York or LA. Disney is still a bargain.

I'd like to know about the cutting the cake yourself, as well! Also, is it possible to get a smaller cake for less than 50 people? I'm having a custom wedding but there will only be 25 - 30 people and I think it's immoral to waste that much yummy cake! LOL

If I have to I will skip the wedding cake seeing as we're having a dessert party anyway, but if it's possible I'd still like a small one.

I don't think you can cut your cake yourself that goes back to the whole health issue. I was told that we had to have a cake for a min size of 50 people for a custom wedding. This cake helps you meet your food and beverage min.

We are having our VR at Grand Floridian in June. The minimum cake at the GF is a 65 person cake regardless of your party size. But our cake is still reasonable at $11.50 per slice. And we are definitely taking that cake top back to our room!!!

Is 65 person minimum a new rule? The reason I ask I because my husband and I were just married on Nov 1 and our reception was at the GF as well....we had a 50 person minimum rule for our cake.

I guess it must be something new. We have tried to get them to make it only for 50, but they will not. I'm not really upset because of the price but it is just too many for our small group and I hate to waste our pretty cake. But to get our money's worth, our cake is going to be a focal point in our room. A great idea by our Floral Event Manager, Laura puts it under a gazebo with lights focused on it.

However, I'm not complaining because our VR is rescheduled because of Hurricane Katrina and since our contract is so "old" we dont' have any other of the new added "extras".

Cakes for less than 50 people can be done. Some designs may be excluded. Ask your EM to inquire about your cake design choice.

how about having a "FAKE CAKE"? I was at a wedding as a dj where they have a fabulous 100% fake cake for display, and then they brought a sheet cake from a local baker for a lot less money.

The fake cake is for "dsiplay purposes -- pictures -- only.

Most of the Disney cake designs can be done for 50 ppl, but some designs require the higher number to achieve the look requested. Some cakes require larger tiers to support the floral choices, achieve the style pictured, or are of a varied shape difference (round.square, round) that require larger tiers.

The idea of a fake cake does not lower your cake cost at all. The majority of the cost of your cake is in the labor to create the decoration, not in the cost off the products to make it. Some bakeries will "rent" you a fake cake, but Disney does not employ this practice.

To lower your cake cost, consider ordering a smaller cake and making up the difference with undecorated sheet cakes that will not be seen, just served.
