We are new owners at BWV since this fall. We have made reservations for this coming August for a 1 bdrm. I've kind of plotted out my vacation plans for about 4 yrs. down the road. Yes, I know....compulsive. But, I was curious as to how my points would suffice. It seems that I'm borrowing from the next year for the next 3 yrs. then after that I'm fine. I only have 150 points and don't really want more than 200. Maybe I should add on. My question is actually how many of you borrow rather than bank points? Is it a bad habit to get into? This would have all been a lot more simple if I hadn't looked into Vero Beach. Now, I just have to stay there too!!! Thanks all.

We have borrowed extensively even though we own 300 points (100 point add-on this past June; 200 bought Oct 02). Hopefully that will change in '05 because we want to bank some points for '06, our retirement year (Knock on wood!). That said, however, I also have it in the back of my mind that we'll do another add-on when we retire, so who knows? It certainly doesn't bother me much that I don't have two points to rub together (take-off on an old cliche), but it would be nice to have some "in the bank".

hard question - I didn't borrow at all until 1999 - that year we could use our 2000 points and I borrowed everything - we had free tickets in 1999 - anyway since then I just can't get back - and I have plenty of points - but with my brother needing them during high seasons, other relatives, and friends also - I just will have to bit the bullet and learn the word "no"....

it depends if you intend to kept your points until 2042 - it won't hurt - if you intend to sell them especially in the next few years - it can hurt because a buyer won't offer you as much for your points as he would someone who banks there points vs borrowing.

I know - noone knows the future.

On the financial principle that a good today is worth more than a promise of that same good tomorrow, and given that we do not pay anything extra to borrow next year's points, it just makes good sense for us to borrow next year's points as often as possible (IMHO):hyper: .

Now if we were planning to get a Grand Villa one year, I suppose we might bank some. Or if we had an odd amount of points left over at the 8 month mark, we would need to think about banking so as not to lose them; after the 9 month mark, we would have to think about using or renting them out. But in general, a borrowed point that gets used is a point that is never going to be lost.

As for VB, I am kicking myself for reserving there on points for MLK weekend: we are getting 5 nites in a studio (94 pts), and then I see deals for studios for $99 a nite for that time period! Hmm, if we had rented out those points at $10 per point, the arbitrage difference would be nearly $400 after tax. Of course this is on borrowed points (our UY is February) so there is no backing out now:mad: . But then, we are all looking forward to escaping frigid New England weather for a long weekend and enjoying the beach, pool and grapefruit groves of VB.

We are fairly new owners at BCV and VB - we have borrowed BCV points and banked some VB points

Borrowing points is only a bad habit if you cannot control your borrowing (like regular borrowing) and you do not have a firm trip plan forward.

Sounds like you have a firm idea of your future points - if you can stay disciplined with your stays you should be fine and you will probably borrow some years and bank others

thanks

At least you got to use the points, and enjoyed them before another "death and / or disaster" strikes...

I've been short the past 2 years, and keep adding on.... Now I have too many, and may have to sell one. But am waiting to see how the school year (DD - starting 1st grade) effects are schedules and point usage.

In the meantime, I'm trying out renting points, because I really just don't want to let go yet unless I'm really sure.

So I think a point spent, is a point well spent.

How many other things in your life have you put money down for that brings you such enjoyment?

Use them, enjoy them, and buy more (LOL).

Goldi.

Of course. We go every other year. So this year we used 7 banked points, 150 current points and 125 borrowed points from 2004. Now when I get my 2004 allotment, I'll bank them, and in 2005 we will use those 25 banked points, plus the 150 points for a 175 point trip in 2005, and then having a LOT of points in 2007

May I suggesting renting points on occation? Our lot of 2007 points is to take my family. I think I'll end up a few points short (unless I manage to hook us all up with standard view rooms) and I'll probably just rent those.

Thanks you guys. My dh saw my post and almost had a heart attack...."Add-on more points????" Poor guy. Nope, not at this point. But who knows what's down the road. I never thought too much about renting those few missing points. Thanks.
A side note here....my dd, 10, is extremely shy. She hardly ever approaches someone to ask a question. So, when she came home from school today and told me that a noon aide at her school had a whistle with DVC on it and she talked to the lady, I thanked DVC for one more thing!!! It seems she saw the logo and just walked up to the lady and asked "Do you belong to DVC?" The answer was "Sure do, do you?" Katie proudly said "yes, at Boardwalk and where do you go?" "Yacht Club." So, just one more reason to love DVC. It helped my dd conquer her shyness in some small way!!:teeth:

Cute story about your DD!

We are usually in banking mode, but in reality, banking or borrowing is all the same. With banking, you have to be sure you use enough points the next year, and with borrowing, you have to make sure you don't use too many!;)

We are borrowers here.... And we are in the 1000 point club....

For me, borrowing is easier since we have a Dec UY for most of our points... that way my Dec2004 points I use in 2004, instead of 2005 when there are current. It helps my brain conceptulize everything. And with 5 contracts at 3 resorts and 2 UYs I need all the help I can get, to keep it all straight! :earseek:

So for us... banking is really just not using the points in 'my defined' UY, but in DVC's defined UY, (except no deadlines)if that makes sense.

Anyway, it works for us.

I'm starting to get dizzy just thinking about this:D

We have consistantly banked for the last three years, but that is due to change with a possible cruise and GV lurking in the not too distant future.:smooth:

Wow! And I thought I was just rationalizing! What a great way of thinking about this. I have a December use year, too, and I just found the whole idea of borrowing so much easier so that I am using my points for the year in the year they are "assigned" to. I've already borrowed 2004. (was given 2003 too). I'm just looking at it like it's really no big deal because around vacation time next June in 2005, we'll just borrow 2005 points.

(I think)
