How many vehicles does your household have?

With rumors that gas prices may extremely rise by fall, (possibly over $3.00 :scared: ) can your family survive with just 1 vehicle? We had this conversation at work and I'm not sure if I could share a car with DH. I'm used to having 2 cars. I know some families only have 1 vehicle? How do they do it? Could you?

We couldn't do it with one car. DH and I both work and we work in totally opposite directions. I hope it is only a rumor about gas prices. We're paying 2.38 now.

I hope I never have to give up one of our two vehicles! I guess you gotta do what you gotta do, but it would be hard to have just one vehicle in this day and age, with kids being involved in sports and having two people working, etc.

We probably could if we had to now that I think about it...my first reaction was "No way"....but DH and I actually work opposite shift...he gets home before I leave for work in the AM and I get home before he has to leave for work.

Right now we have a 2002 Dodge Ram Quad Cab pickup, a 1998 GMC Suburban.....and since DH drives quite a hike to work....he bought a 1990 Mercury Cougar (the Hoopdee...we call it ;) )......

Our truck and suburban really suck that gas!!!!

No way!

We had just one car for the first two years of our marriage and it worked as long as we were both working in the same town. Now DH works 60 miles to the north and I go to school 25 miles to the south.

We lived with only 1 vehicle for about 5 months. It was really tough. My DH works on call and can be called in anytime of day or night. When he would get called in to work in the middle of the night I would have to lug the kids out of bed to take him to work. It was so hard to carry them back in from the van back upstairs and pray they would stay asleep. Once DD started school we had to get a second car again.

We have 3 cars and a motorcycle. When prices got high last summer/fall, hubby took his bike to work.

With 4 kids I need the van. We do not having bussing in town so I have to drive the older ones to school.

Right now we have one.

When we lived in CA we had two. Once when DH's jeep was broken for a few months I had to drive him back and forth to work so I could keep the van to take the kids to and from school. It worked out okay.

Now it sucks. Sorry, but it does. His job is too far for me to be going back and forth to take him, and since I am a SAHM I don't really NEED the van especially since the kids now ride a bus. But that leaves me home with no transportation and I think that's part of the reason I have been so bummed out lately. It's depressing being home day after day.

Bottom line it can work out if you have to.

Technically...we're insuring 4 vehicles, but oldest daughter drives one of them in Texas. Youngest son will be driving in the next few months, so the 3rd vehicle will get some use again. I'm not working now, so we could probably get away with just 2 vehicles at home, but wouldn't go back to just 1.

We probably couldn't. DH runs his own business and doesn't have set hours. He often gets called out of town for the day at the last minute. I wouldn't be able to take the children to their Dr. appointments, or pick them up from activities or school if they're sick. We don't owe anything on either car. I would probably just drive the least amount possible, rather than sell one of the vehicles.

Technically we have 3. Anybody wanna buy a slightly used 2002 Dodge PT Cruiser, purple with grey interior?

DH drives a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I have an '02 Dodge Neon which I love to death, even though I miss my 96 Buick Skylark. I felt SAFE in Bucky (the Buick) because he was a massive Detroit behemoth, a virtual land yacht. Luna (the Neon) is like a Barbie car..small and made of plastic. I am scared to death somebody's going to hit me or I'm going to run into a tree and that'll be all she wrote! :scared:

right now we are down to 2, but we will be going back to 3 with in the year. DH and I are both in outside sales, so our cars are our offices.

We have 5 vehicles for 4 drivers. DD has hers at college, I need one, DH needs one, DS just got his license and it comes in handy letting him drive himself, and we have one farm pickup truck. I would love to unload a vehicle, but right now we really use them all. With NJ insurance rates, I think I work just to pay insurance!

Technicaly we have 7 vehicles, however we only really drive 2 on a regular basis.

1- 02 chevy caviler
2- 03 chevy impala
3- 85 chevy suburban
4- 58 chevy belair
5- 55 chevy belair
6- 69 old cultass (455)
7- 70 IH Scout

or yeah and two motorcycles :moped:

8- 89 suzuki 1200
9- 87 yamaha rebel 250

obviously we are collectors, but our top two are the everyday-ers.

but we usually take the train to work.... so it saves on gas $$$$

Oooh..I want a 58 Belair... *drools*

That or a modified (to have automatic transmission) 68 VW Beetle. That was the first car I ever remember my parents having and I loved that car.

We have two cars for two drivers. It would probably take more gas for us to have just one car than for us to use two cars.

First, we would have the pain of getting two cranky children up and ready for the day to leave the house a 6 a.m. and then we'd have to drive Dad to work about 20 miles away. Since nothing is really open so early, we'd have to drive all the way back home (drive total of 40 miles). Then, DS would need to go to preschool 10 miles away, I would run a few errands and head home with DD (we're now up to a drive total of 60 miles). Then, we'd have to go get DS from school in the afternoon (our total for the day is now 80 miles). Then, DD had better nap quick because we wouldn't have more that a few hours before we'd have to go get DH. So, that would be a total for the day of 120 miles of driving on one car. And I and the kids woud be very cranky.

Currently, driving two cars, DH drives 40 miles a day to/from work. And I drive 40 miles taking DS to and picking him up from school and running my errands. So, that's a total of 80 miles of driving each day.

We have a Subaru Forrester and Toyota Corolla. Both get pretty good gas mileage, but the Corolla is slightly better because it isn't AWD and it's smaller than the Forrester. When gas prices got so high last year, we tended to bundle our errands into fewer trips to town and we took the Corolla out for our weekend errands (we usually take the Subaru because it has more room with the kids).

we have 3 cars for 2 drivers. DH recently got a Yukon XL and we decided to keep our 94 Honda for our DD who will be 16 soon.

We have 3 for two drivers, but have two kids coming up that will hopefully be using the same vehicles. We have a '95 van, a '96 truck, and an '02 small car. We normally use the truck and the small car in town, but take the van camping etc.

There is no way I'd want to be without a car. I don't work but wouldn't want to be stranded at home in case I had to get DD from school or something. I also do not shop at night or on weekends because of crowds. If I didn't have a car then I'd have to wait til DH is home from work. Gas was already high so going to over $3 again won't bother me. Right now we have 3 cars. One for each of us and one for DS.
