Hi,

All kids in IL are supposed to have PE EVERY day. IL is the only state left that mandates daily PE. My 8th grader has it everyday. My High Schooler is exempt because she is in a varsity sport and has a full load of classes.

PJ...Wow! That can get confusing. I would have to mark the days on my calendar. I already do that for his lunches.

I would mark it on the calendar BUT.... if there is a snow day they don't lose a day of "special" .... they just pick up where they left off. If they were due to have PE on Tuesday but it is a snow day, then they have PE on Wednesday.... they don't skip the specials.... really made a scribbled mess of my calendar!!!.......P

He has it every other day so 3 days one week and 2 days the next.

My son is in the sixth grade and has PE 2x per week. I do not think they get much exercise, however  .

My DS has also struggled with his weight and we have him enrolled in a weight management clinic through our local Children's Hosptital. In addition to having the option of going to a high intensity exercise class each evening, we see a nutritionist about once and month and just had a 6 month follow up with the cardiologist. Now that DS has football 5 days per week, he is not able to go to the exercise classes. He will likely start again at the end of football season.

Here are some other ideas. When DS was close to not "making weight" for football one year, he and I would take a five mile bike ride on the days that he did not have practice. Also, we walk on days when he does not have some other activity. We have a 2 mile route and a 3 mile route. It not only gets us moving (DS likes to have little races during the course of the walk) but also keeps us communicating. I have also used that time to quiz him on school work if he had a test coming up--that way we could not say that we could not exercise due to having to study!

Oldest DD is in kindergarten here. She has organized PE twie a week, but they have a 30-min recess every day (including PE days). She is also starting her 3rd year of dance, once a week for an hour.

DD has PE twice a week and then recess everyday. She's in Kindergarten. I also have her involved in cheerleading, dance and color guard to burn off all that energy she has.

Every day here for Middle and High School.

8th grade (last year of middle school) will have PE for 9 weeks 5 days a week, right now in that time period DD is having computer tech, then art, music and then gym.

DD gets enough exercise as she is a year around swim team.

Imgonnabe40...WOW!!! The things I don't know about football yet. And thanks for the ideas. Walking and schoolwork...have to love it! :teeth:

LisaTX and tiggerlover...Thanks for the ideas! :teeth: And those stats are pretty scary, TL.

Lurker...I want that law in VA!!

pj...Sorry for the sloppy calendar. That must be tough to keep straight.

Edit: Just mentioned to DS that if he has PE just once a week, then the second weekly period must be used for something else. He said they have Spanish twice a week. :( Seems backwards to me!! In Florida he had Spanish once a week...where there is a LOT of Spanish spoken!! Here in Virginia, I don't think I've heard too many people speak Spanish yet. Can't think of one actually, but I'm sure I'll cross someone.

Come to the Richmond area. There are tons of Spanish speaking people.

DD is going into 8th grade. She hasn't been required to have PE since 6th grade. I remember having it every year.

I voted five or more.

My oldest is in fifth grade, and the 4th and 5th graders have it every day. They do not have a place to go outside for recess every day, so they just have gym everyday instead. My middle child just started kindergarten and has it three times a week. This is the same for the 1st-3rd graders as well.

Another thing about gym class in my school district, is that they must have shoes just for gym. They need to be non-marking shoes that are left at school all year.

Elementry School every school day.

Middle School 6 out of 7 days. They are on a rotating schedule where they have only 6 out of their 7 classes per day. Dropping one class every day.

High School, not sure what it is now but when I was going it was every day, and you had to take 4 semesters (out of 8).

1 x a week. They also have music, art, computer lab and library time 1 x a week. Sports are usually played at recess though, and both DS play organized sports outside of school.
