How many smashed penny machines and what do they cost?

DD has liked smashing pennies other places we've been, and I'd like to bring pre-shined pennies and the right amount of payment for the machines. How much do they cost each? How many machines are there in all the parks?

LOL, I like that you called them smashed pennies instead of pressed pennies.

cute.

edit: and bringing shiny pennies for this purpose is a great idea!

Here's a reference list. Almost scary how much detail there is....and how many machines/designs there are!

We use a mini M&Ms container (or two) and layer it up....two quarters, one pretty penny. There are quarter pressing machines too, but we just consider those completely off limits :) My DSs spot a machine and yell "Smashing money! Get the tube!!" You can get a pressed penny portfolio too to display them in. My kids have fun adding their new pressed pennies to it at the end of each day or before heading for the parks the next day. A lot of fun for something so simple, but if you get addicted, the $$ can add up!

They are all over the place, my daughter loves them too. The sell a souvenir holder for the pressed pennies too. Of course they do. :) A tip we learned was if you have one of those cylindrical Mini M&M containers, they fit quarters perfectly and neatly as opposed to a ziplock. Have fun!

Tons of them. Most of the resorts have one, if not two. And they are at all the theme parks, scattered all over the place. You can find listings online, or should be able to ask at guest services for a copy of their list. Keep in mind that they get moved all the time and may not be exactly where they are listed as being.

There are 502 pressed penny designs. Most machines have 3 designs so there are approximately 160 machines for just pennies. There are some quarter machines which need 5 quarters (4 quarters plus 1 that gets pressed). There is also a dime machine in Magic Kingdom by Space Mountain. Not sure of the cost of that machine.
Presscoins.com has the most accurate list (at least that we have found) of the penny machines (and quarter and dime machines) and designs and has them listed several different ways. They just updated their lists Feb. 23. Disney does periodically change the designs - so you never have a complete collection.
I looked at the maps referred to in the previous post and it is definitely not up to date There have been some machines removed at some locations and new locations added. Also there are machines at the resorts. We have over 400 pressed pennies collected so far (need just Ft. Wilderness, some new machines/and or designs in the parks, and the waterparks and disneyquest to collect) - and use the presscoins.com list to keep track of the coins that we have already collected and which ones we still need.

It took us a while to figure out what to do with them - the Disney pressed coin books seemed like a waste since we were only collecting the pennies and you would need so many of them. Their little books only hold about 60 pennies and 9 quarters. We finally decided to display them like regular pennies.
We got the fold and staple 2X2 coin holders with an elongated cent window and put each coin in one. Mark Johnson coin and supplies (they are on the internet) have a great price on them. They also help protect the coin from tarnishing.
We then bought the notebook page holders that you put the fold & staple coin holders in (Hobby Lobby carries them as well as coin collecting supply stores. There are slots for 20 of the coin holders on each page. We bought a Disney scrapbook (9X12) from Hallmark - it has two posts so we punched new holes on the pages (they are meant to go in a three hole binder). We sorted the coins either by series or subjects (if not part of a series) and put them in the holders.
For our Universal pressed pennies, we picked up a scrapbook with posts at Hobby Lobby (Michaels also has them) which has a spot for a picture on the front. We are putting a picture of the Universal globe that is right outside Universal Orlando. We were originally thinking about doing the same for Disney (getting a black or red one) and putting in a picture of Mickey & Minnie or the castle but we saw the Disney one at Hallmark and thought it was really cute..

My DD8 loves the pressed pennies. I just wanted to add for anyone that is interested that Guest Services at Magic Kingdom gave us a list of all of the machines and what characters were at each machine.

I see that others gave you links for locations, but if you forget them just go to guest services and request a copy of all of the locations.

There were enough that I calculated it would cost about $350 to get them all when I went in 2010. And I had some already from 2004. The link from CapnJack is the one I used too. Other containers that are good for holding the "penny-quarter-quarter" stacks are the tubes that the generic "Airborne" tablets come in and (if you know anyone who is diabetic), the tubes that the glucose "wafers" come in. Getting the Mentos Gum "tubes" is a good way to store the pennies after they've been pressed. They are kinda oval shaped. I had one for each of the parks. Made "filing" them easier when I got home. I put mine in cardboard holders and keep them in binders in a slide page. I used to use the books they sell in the parks, but they turned my pennies all funky. I buy the cardboard holders online, but I can't remember the vendor...

Dimes are usually 3 quarters plus the dime. The newest quarter machines coming out at Disneyland have been $1.25, up a quarter. This trend will probably continue for new machines being released.

We have used the M&M containers in the past. But something I just realized were that Airborne containers will work as well. Just my two cents or fifty one cents.;)

We used the current list with short descriptions from presscoins.com http://www.presscoins.com/Listings/WDWCondensed.pdf and cut out the line(s) of location's machine and coins. We then put the appropriate number of quarters and pennies needed for a location in a snack size zip lock bag along with the line(s) from the listing for that location. We marked the outside of the bag with the location. We also put in an extra set of quarters and penny just in case one didn't print right. We then put all the bags from the locations within each park into a larger zip-lock bag (quart size worked good) marked with that park. We took the appropriate park bag when we went to a park. When we pressed pennies, we put them in their bag so that we knew the location and what we got and what we still need - also kept them organized until we collected enough to start organizing them at home.

Yep, we use the Mentos tubes for the pressed ones too! Perfect size and shape! Of course, I bought the Mentos tubes and pitched the candy...horrible things! I don't have any trouble "emptying" the mini M&Ms tubes though, go figure! :lmao:

we also do the M&M holders. i usually do fill one up with quarters for the quarter press, but it's not as important to us because those really add up!

right now, we have three of the WDW pressed penny books full. it's starting to get harder to find ones that we don't already have.

If you only have three full - you are missing a whole lot. There are 502 different pressed pennies currently at Disney. Go to presscoins.com and get their listing. You can see which ones you don't have. We figured that it would take at least 9 of the Disney books to hold all the pennies and they do keep changing the machine dies and locations - we have a couple of pennies that have been retired in the past two years.
Yes even collecting the pennies can add up. We only collect the pennies - actually hubby does the collecting and I don't mind. This way he can't say anything about my hitting the gift shops - if he does I'll just remind him of his "expensive souvenirs" :)
