How many points is enough???

My dh and I bought 160 points last year. We just added 50 more yesterday before the price increase. We have 4 children and need to stay in 2 bedroom units from now on . We live an hour from the Mouse and my dh absolutely loves everything Disney. It is all he ever wants to do for vacation. I enjoy it very much, although I am hoping one day to lure him away from Orlando so we can visit HHI or VB for some "Disney Lite".

I guess I am wondering if any of you have a "formula" for figuring out how many points you need... I am already thinking we need at least 40 more, but I don't want to put our money into that right now...nor does dh. Maybe we can happen upon a good deal in a couple of years through resale...But then again I think this is kind of like an addiction that will never be completely satisfied...and that some day we'll have 1 million points and still be eyeing the resales!

The answer to your question is unique to every family. It will depend on:

How many trips per year do you want to take using points?

What size accomodations will you want? You already know you want a 2 bedroom.

Will you stay over weekends or mostly limit your stays to Sunday - Thursday? Since you are Florida residents (often good cash discounts are available to Fl residents), are you willing to pay cash for weekend nights and move between rooms or even resorts if necessary to save on points?

What time(s) of the year do you plan to visit?

Once you have thought through those questions, you'll have a better idea of what you need (well want, anyway, LOL). I think your financial situation will take care of the "1 million" points probelm. Right now, that would mean about $4M in dues every year!!!

My own "addonitis" is pretty much in control for the moment - limited by the amount of vacation time my boss allows.

As Carol said, it varies with each family.

However, DIS research statistics show that the "enough" range is a moving target which appears to be about 150-200 more than the DVC owner currently has.

any amount of points will never be enough. I'm still trying to figure out how many points I need to stay for 1 year at a time!!!! I just want to move in......good luck figuring it out though!!! You are so lucky you live only an hour away - I wish I could take the $$$$ I spend on airfare and put it towards more points!!!

We started with how many points it would take for us to have one nice trip each year in a 1BR and then splurge with the extended family maybe every 3 years or so. But I have to be honest, I want more . I went in on DVC with my brother and he's more reasonable when it comes to investing into DVC, so he is usually able to talk me down .
