I justbought a new 8 megapixel 12X zoom Canon and a 4GB memory card. If I have it on 8 megapixels all the time, how many photo will it hold? Just looking for a rough estimate. I know the ISO and all that other technical mumbo-jumbo has alot to do with it but I just want an idea. I am very camera technology shy! Thanks!

Are you shooting jpeg or raw, that will make a difference. The easiest way to tell is put the card in the camera, format it, and see how many pictures it tells you you will get. It will be within a few shots of that number.

one graph I found says maybe 2000! Will that be enough?

my canon 870is which is also 8 megapixel has a 4 gig card in it, with the highest resolution and it set on fine it holds about 1100 pictures, will check my S5is when I get home.

Thanksso much for the replies!! Ihave no idea if I will be shooting jpeg or raw- which is better? How do I tell? I actually haven;t received the camera yet, hopefully tomarrow. I hope 2000 pictures wouldbe enough. Our last tripwetook about 800!!:scared1: It is a Canon S5IS if this matters at all.

Yeah for best printing I'd keep it set at highest resolution and on fine. You get less but its your memories. Delete them as you go if you don't like them and you should have enough space. :thumbsup2

Makes me excited to take my new camera. I have 2G card so I'll probably need another.

I would look more at owner opinions on DPReview, look at all of them, then make your own call.

A 4 gig card in an S5is will hold 1124 pictures, thats at full resolution, 3264x2448 set at fine. The S5is only shoots in JPEG no RAW option. Get yourself a couple of sets of good rechargable batteries, I have been using the Energizer rechargables 2500mah ones.

Prices are so cheap for SD cards tht you could buy one 4 gig one and the get a couple of 2 gig as a backup incase you run out of space.

And like one of the other posts say set the camera to shoot at the highest resolution possible for the best prints or incase you need to edit/cop the picture.
