How many photos fit on a memory card?

I've got a 4 MP digital camera. I can fit just over 250 photos on a 256MB card. I'm shopping for a 3 MP camera for my cousin but I'm not sure what size card to get him to start off. He doesn't take nearly as many photos as me and isn't likely to ever enlarge anything beyond 4x6, so the 3 MP will be plenty for him. I'm assuming that more 3MP photos fit on a card than 4MP photos so I'm thinking that at least to start, a 128 MB card may be sufficient.

So my question is, how many 3MP images will fit on a 128MB card?

I have a 3MP camera and the following was taken from the manual for a 64MB memory card. The picture quality for all values is 'Normal'. I guess for a 128MB card, the number of pictures can be doubled. I found that the middle setting (1280 x 960) was good enough to print out 5x7 prints. Hope this helps.

I also have a 4 megapixel camera, and at the highest setting (effectively using the 4 mp), I get about 128 pictures on a 256 MB card. If you're getting 250, I'm pretty sure you're not using the highest resolution setting, and you're effectively setting your camera to between 2-3 megapixels, I think. I'm not an expert however.

Memory cards are so inexpensive right now, I'd go ahead and get at least a 256 because they're generally not that much more than a 128.

On our last XMAS trip to WDW, I took two 256 cards, and a new 512 card, and filled all of them up. I ended up with about 500 pictures, which is about right as it means about 125 on each 256 card. I do much editing/cropping on my photos, and it's very important to me to capture the picture at the highest resolution so I can crop a bunch and still end up with a high quality picture.

It depends on both the camera and the card.
