We bought into VGC. Although we are east-coasters who vacation mainly to WDW, we chose VGC for two reasons:
1. With incentives, it was cheaper per point that BLT, which is the WDW resort we were considering (we weren't considering re-sale contracts).
2. We were comfortable with the idea that we would be able to book
somewhere at WDW whenever we wanted to go there. But on the rare occasions when we wanted to go out to California, we wanted the home resort advantage.
I disagree with those who say it's easy to get the reservations you want at the 7-month window. Like I said, you can be pretty sure that there will be somewhere available, but depending on the time of year, your prefered room type/view, and your length of stay, there might be only 1-2 choices. We've been lucky enough to be able to stay at a variety of resorts over our first few of years: SSR, VGC, AKV, BLT, and in Jan it will be BCV. But it took us 3 trips to WDW before we lucked into a BLT reservation at 7 months, and we still haven't gotten into BWV.
That said, we've been very satisfied with each of the places we've stayed, and each has their own advantages and disadvantages. Since we haven't had any particular needs (other than people capacity), we haven't had a bad trip yet.
Editing here to add: We bought this DVC without visiting any DVC resort. We were already experienced WDW-goers and comfortable with the idea that any available WDW DVD resort would serve our needs (a place to stay). We had never been to
Disneyland, but knew we wanted to go at least occasionally (maybe every five years), and had a really good feeling about the VGC and its proximity to the parks.
