How many meals do you actually prepare in your villa?

We cook each night at home (except for Sunday as my dad cooks), as I come from a restaurant family. We eat very healthily as we have allergies/sensitivies/bowel issues, so we don't eat packaged, processed or prepared foods, except for things like crackers and cereal (when it's not organic). We try to buy organic as much as possible too, so we don't eat stuff like: Kraft dinner, pop tarts, hot dogs, soda pop, etc. We eat fruits/veggies each and every day as well.

We usually go to WDW for 2 weeks in the summer as I'm a teacher, so we have been working out different dining scenarios. We've pretty much done it all in regards to dining and prefer 2 TS meals per day. We can eat breakfast in our room and have done so many times. This time, we started looking into cooking a few dinners in our villa as it would save money, but once we started looking at it, we aren't sure if it will work for us.

I read through many posts on cooking meals in villa, but a lot of the food is stuff that we don't eat, or, it's processed and will be a problem for our allergies (I am allergic to corn syrup, so canned sauces, etc., are a problem for us). We drive from Canada, but we aren't about to pack our Crock Pot for a few meals, nor do we have room to load our van up with groceries. Also, the actual grocery shopping for items will be problematic in Florida, as we have to read all labels, and since we are Canadian, this will take awhile as your products are made differently.

So, for those who cook in your villa, why do you cook? Is it to save money, make your favourite meals, save time, etc? We only have 2 kids, one of which is a baby, and one who is 5, so their food costs are pretty good, although we don't care for many of the kids offerings such as chicken strips, etc., so we get steaks, chicken and pasta most of the time.

For us, we actually like to go and sit in restaurants (we like the Deluxe plan) as it gives us time to rest and cool down as July is hot! Because we have allergies, we also get to speak to the chefs, which is great. The other thing, is that over a 2 week period, the savings of cooking a few dinners and eating a bunch of breakfasts in our villa, is not astronomical - we thought it would be higher, but we are pretty good when ordering out as we only order what we can eat, don't drink pop, don't get desserts all of the time, drink water, etc. So, for a few hundred dollars savings between eating in our room for a few meals in combination with TIW, as opposed to Deluxe plan, we aren't sure that those savings are worth having to grocery shop, prepare food, etc. Plus, with the Deluxe plan, we are getting more food, snacks and water, which will be more than enough food to feed the kids.

I'm sorry if this is a long and confusing post, as we are just trying to wrap our heads around cooking in our villa - we love our 1 bedroom, but not really for the kitchen. We like the break from cooking as we cook every night at home, but once you factor in grocery shopping and preparing meals in our villa, we aren't sure that it would be time well spent? Anyone else like us?

We're right there with you!

The only thing we use the kitchen for is breakfast and it's usually something quick - cereal, bagels, etc. - no actual cooking involved! The fridge is great for milk, half-n-half for coffee, cold drinks & leftovers from restaurants! We like to eat one sit-down meal a day at WDW and the other is usually a CS in one of the parks. Someday we might mix it up and prepare a meal or two in the villa. It's nice to have the option. :goodvibes

We do a fair amount of cooking. I think it saves us a ton of money and time, and just the sheer calories of restarant food.

We eat every breakfast in the villa, and two or three dinners. Lunch is often out because we're in the parks.

We also bring home our leftovers from restaurants and have them in the villa for lunch.

As for what we cook, for breakfast it's:

Eggs/bacon/bagels/
french toast/orange juce/coffee/
cereal/pop tarts

I normally buy a big tray of the cut up veggies with dip. That way, we have a fresh, healthy appetizers and I can use the cut up fresh veggies for dinner as well, like stir-frying the broccoli and carrots together with some onion.

For dinner, meals are often:
Steaks on the grill, baked potatoes and a salad
Spaghetti and salad
Hamburgers on the grill, coleslaw and beans

We also bring popcorn and lemonade to have in the room as snacks.

Particularly when we go in the summer, we are at the villa a lot during the day using the pool and such.

Oh, and we also have wine and bourbon in our Owner's Locker as well as spices and such, so we can have cocktail hour.

We often have friends with us as well, so we like to kick back on our OKW balcony with our cocktails and appetizers before dinner.

We cook in our villas because we dont believe in going out more then once a day, even on vacation.

We always have breakfast in the villas, we like to do one "fancy" breakfast ( french toast, sausage, bacon, eggs, etc.) but all the other days we have cereal and fruit.

On most days we are out of the room at lunch time but in case we arent we make sure to keep chips in the room four lunch or afternoon snacks.

We usually only have one or two dinners in the room, for one we usually order pizza to be delivered and for the other we see what we're in the mood for. I remember a couple years ago our family made baby back ribs in the room!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another good idea is to keep sandwhich fixings on hand:thumbsup2

In view of what you've said, I think I would plan the best I could and I would buy what I needed in Canada! That way whatever you do need to fix in your villa, you will have ingredients you are familiar and comfortable with. You like the DDP, so do it, and if you think you'll need breakfast things, bring what you need. If it doesn't work out the way you like it this year, well you at least have some experience for the future.

We don't stay as long as you and really only use the kitchen for food for the DGC and breakfasts. We do like having fresh fruit available.

We eat a cold breakfast in the villa - cereal, coffee, juice, maybe something from a bakery. I know quite a few people enjoy (or don't mind) cooking on vacation, but I'm not one of them. It's a vacation! We'd rather spend that time out in a park, not in a kitchen doing what we can do at home. We enjoy having the kitchen for breakfasts, snacks and heating up leftovers. But that's about it.

We occasionally fix a hot breakfast, we also occasionally go to Olivia's at OKW for breakfast. Or norm, though, is to have cereal, coffee, fruit and toast. We also usually buy a package of cold cuts and sliced cheese, in case we want a sandwich. Other than that, we usually have a Table service lunch and Counter service dinner.

Being a Canadian who resides in FLorida but travels back to the homeland, other than prepackaged items, food is food. For me it's, I love to cook no matter at home or vacation. My family loves fresh fruits and vegetables, grilled meats and assorted salads. What I make here in Florida is the same food I make when I visit home, sure the produce probably comes from different states or countries but that's about it. The grocery stores here now carry just as much gluten free products and organics if that's your tastes. In a 6 or 7 day visit, I like to eat out a few times (2 lunches and 2 dinners) but personally we don't like to eat out every night and I find a lot of the food not to be as tasty as what I make, in the end the sauces all taste the same and the DDP is a ridiculous amount of food in my opinion. We love Jiko and Le Cellier, Yachtman, Flying Fish so everyone gets a vote so we can make the ADR for the few times we will eat out.

We don't eat in our villa at all. I mean NOTHING. Not even cold cereal,. In fact, we don't even keep anything in our room refrigerator except the occasional beer for DH.

I refuse to cook on vacation (or even wipe crumbs off counters:rolleyes: ).

We ALWAYS get the Dining Plan & have a counter-service "brunch" & a Table-service dinner.

We cook in the villa more to be healthy than to save money. We both have high cholesterol and need to watch the fat intake. That being said we also like to have our cocktail hour at the villas to save big bucks! ;)

I have a question for those who like to use the grills. How do you clean them? Or do you just grill on foil? I'd like to try grilling next time we're down but am alittle squeemish to use a public grill.

Seeing as we are early risers we always have breakfast in the room. Coffee, cereal, toasted bagel, fruit, an occassion pancake or waffle is all part of our breakfast fare. We usually have a late morning pastry (at the park's bakeries) then a light lunch (sometimes) in the room with sandwitches, chips, etc. Back to the park or other, then dinner six'ish from entrees we bring from home (so it is an easily a heat and serve proposition). Minimal kitchen duties (shared) and then either an early night or off to the park(s) again.

We figure we are saving money and also controlling the food we intake (here again, some allergy and sensitivity concerns that we take our own responsibility for.)

We do usually plan for one night out (at a Disney restaurant).

This is pretty much us too. We eat everything out. I'm on vacation, I refuse to cook. The kitchen in our villa gets pretty much no use. We do keep a few bottles of water in the fridge, but that's it. Last trip I brought snacks and nobody wound up eating them. I tossed them in the garbage before we left. We use our TIW. Nobody really eats breakfast in our family, we grab CS on the fly for lunch and then its always TS for dinner to relax and enjoy.

On the few occasions we did grocery shop and cook in our room, we didn't like it. I didn't like cooking and we hated feeling like we were missing the Disney magic by sitting in our room. I'd much rather take in the atmosphere at one of the restaurants or parks.

We eat breakfast only. And it doesn't involve cooking. We keep milk and a bunch of bottled water in the fridge. We eat cereal or occasionally donuts for breakfast. I don't really like cooking at home, so I am not going to do it on vacation LOL. I have a couple of times made spaghetti and macaroni and cheese, but even that doesn't happen anymore.

So, for those who cook in your villa, why do you cook?

Kids are tired at the end of the day and it's more relaxing to prepare something I know they like - Publix frozen pizza  - than to order off a menu every night. We do go out at least once for dinner. I don't go to counter service restaurants, what I make (no, not the frozen pizza) is just as good if not better.

Breakfast is in the room every day. Just so much easier. Lunch is wherever we are at that time.

I don't feel I'm missing the magic. Balcony door is open for the breeze and sounds of Disney.

Edited to add: I do feel grocery shopping is kind of a waste of time. Last trip I used wegoshop (emailed a specific grocery list beforehand) and it was great and there within 15 minutes of getting into our room.

We haven't made our first official DVC owners trip yet. We have rented points. We just kept water and soda in the fridge. We kept snacks around as well.

Our trip in May/June will be for 7 nights. We plan on eating a few breakfasts out (we use this as a brunch) but the rest of the time we'll eat in the room. I plan on going to Publix to get lunch fixins...they have the best lunch meat and cheese and breads!! We will eat at least one or two lunches in the room and then make up sandwiches for our drive back home. I also want to keep fresh fruit in the room as well!!!

When we planned this trip, we weren't DVC owners yet, so we planned to eat out more than normal. We don't want to miss all the fun we planned, but from now on we plan on eating in the room a bit more!!

we make coffee, an occassional small b'fast (toast and/or bakery goodies), & some sandwiches & frozen foods.

i don't cook at home, so i'm certainly not going to start while on vacation ;) . we always rent a car (enjoy outlet shopping, etc) & do at least one grocery run for goodies, including water.

if needed (allergies, etc) i might start cooking, but to me vacation includes eating out :)

Hey Tiger, DW and I are also teachers, so we also spend 2 weeks in the summer. That's the way to go, IMO. Can't afford to eat out all meals every day for two weeks, not to mention the excessive calories, sodium, fat, and sugars in all those dining out meals. Add that to the fact that WDW food is not that great anyway, and the quality of service and menus have both declined with the DDP. We also eat a lot of produce, fruit, grains, etc. DS and I both also have food allergies, which we need to be very careful about.

We usually head over to Publix and stock up on many of the things we usually eat at home. Florida produce is just not as good as what we are used to in California, but Publix has a very good selection compared to Winn-Dixie, Goodings, and Target. I never step foot in Wal-Mart, but I'm sure it's just as lacking as those other stores.

We eat breakfast in the room every day. Yogurt, cereals, occasional eggs, fruit, whole grain toast.

Lunch is usually in the parks and any TS meals we have are eaten at lunch, with the exception of the Biergarten, which only has saurbraten at dinner. We usually only eat about 1 or 2 TS meals these days since the quality has really declined. Besides in the 20 years we've been going to WDW, we've pretty much already done it all. The CS restaurants offer a lot of variety. Anyone who says it's just burgers and chicken strips hasn't spent too much time at WDW, because I never eat a burger or chicken strip the entire time we are there. We always take picnics to the water parks, and we go to the water parks at least three times over the two weeks we are there.

For dinner, we eat out mostly, but we do cook 4 or 5 meals in the room. We don't use processed foods either. We buy fresh chicken breasts, ground beef, a type of fish, tortillas, bread, etc. We always buy key lime juice to make a pie, (very easy to make, and not easy to find in California) and then marinate the chicken with leftover salsa condiments and the leftover key lime juice for 24 hours. Throw those in a pan and you have a 15 minute dinner, along with a salad hot veggies, and fruit. Ground beef is for burritos, along with a can of fat free beans, a salad, veggies, and fruit. We broil the fish (or grill it) and have that with grilled veggies, salad, and fruit. We will also make a meatless meal one of those days, salads with canned beans, cheese, and lots of veggies- whatever is left over. Our last night before checkout is leftover night, including any leftovers we have from restaurants.

We spend about 20-30 minutes cooking dinner. We always take a break in the afternoons, so we are in our villa anyway. If we only went to WDW for a week, we probably wouldn't cook so much. Since we do spend a long time there, we need a break from all the eating out. I realize this doesn't work for everyone, but for us, we look forward to it.

We prepare no meals in the villa. We may eat breakfast there but it would be a bowl of cereal. Sometimes leftovers from dinner the night before.

We are in the parks for lunch and dinner just about every day, or at a hotel restaurant. We love TS at Disney- Jiko, Cali Grill, Artist Point, Yachtsmen Steakhouse, etc.
