Has anyone had recent rental experience with Sixt? I think that I read they’re using AI scanning so that’s something to think about.

We used them in September in the UK

Picked it up from Heathrow and when we returned it in Manchester yes they were using the scanners there in Manchester. I don't remember us going through one on the way out of Heathrow but my husband did take photos of the car before we left the airport there.

1. Take pictures, 2. Take a video, and 3. If you later notice something document it as well. I don’t go nuts trying to capture every molecule but spend a minute or two as a part of my standard rental pick-up procedure now.

As I’ve shared before that has already saved me a $500 wrongful headache. Already did Step 1 and 2 when two hours later I noticed tiny windshield chip and took a pic of that too. A week+ after we returned home they sent us a bill for $500 regarding the chip. Even though I had not noticed during Step 1 or 2, I was able to go back to that footage and find that it already existed during our pick-up! And I knew exactly where to look using that picture taken 2 hours after for reference. Was able to send them what I had and they accepted.

Whether we’re using Sixt or any other, same procedure on our end.

I totally agree with @Genie+ - lots of pics, both outside and inside, then video too. I just came back from Maui and upon return I pointed out a dent in the rear passenger door, the person paused then I pulled up the pic and he noted it was per-existing before I signed off. I hang on to all the photos/video for 6 months before i delete them.

That makes sense and it sounds like it works for the customer’s and business’sadvantage
Only if the system correctly detects damage. Anecdotally what's been happening is that the AI system thinks that water spots are dents and charges fees according to that. Or salt residue is a large paint scrape. Or you drop off a car you picked up somewhere else and you get charged for all of the dings on the vehicle whether they occurred during your possession of the vehicle or not, unless you can prove that it was pre existing.

REmember that one of the first people killed by an auto-driving car was killed because the car's AI didn't correctly detect...a tractor trailer. If I recall correctly the driver was decapitated.
