How many lights on a campsite are too many?

I found out on our last trip that my family thinks our campsite is too dark at night (after how many years of camping they tell me this). I usually just pack a lantern for the table and a flashlight for inside the tent. I've even been known to do whatever needs to be done at the campsite without a light at all.

But, after seeing how some of the campsites look with a couple strings of Christmas lights hanging around, I'm thinking of buying some for camping. Do any of you use Christmas lights at your campsites year round? How many strings of light would be too much light when camping?

My choices are:

1. One lantern, one flashlight.
2. One string of patio lights.
3. 2 strings of Christmas lights (icicles maybe?) between 3 trees at edge of campsite.
4. Strobe light.
5. Enough Christmas lights to warm up anyone who walks by (this happened one night when we passed the site on the edge of the 1600 loop).

The rope lights are what we use normally and then we have some awning lights that hang from the camper awning. The rope lights put out a surprising amount of light and we wind them around the concrete pad.

Now,,,, if you're talking lights for Christmas, July 4th and Halloween,,, one can never have too many!!!

If you're speaking of the rest of the year, we put out some rope lights around the pad & string white icicle lites from the awning. Although I did buy some of the Colored Mickey Head Patio Lights - which could be used year 'round, as opposed the the Peppermint Mickey Head Patio lights, which are strickly Christmas lights. (There has to be some rules for site decorating.)

If when you turn on your lights, the people watching the water parade all turn towards your camper and say " Hey whats that over there " you might want to reduce by a string or two .

We also like to use rope lights. Rope lights come in all different colors. It really depends on my mood as to which lights get put up. If you have access to power, why not have a little light?

No seriously, I have three different sets of lights depending on when I'm camping. I have blue lights that I cable tie to my canopies for most of the year (my camper has a blue theme going). I have multi-colored christmas lights for November/December (along with multi-colored Mickey globes), and I have orange lights (along with Pumpkin Mickey's) for October. I put these on a dusk to dawn timer.

I tend to camp mostly where there is no electricity so only have a couple of propane lanterns, but when there is electricity, the sky is the limit!

We put a string of icicle lights around our screen tent - all year round! We get many comments from people walking by about how pretty it is!

My awning is 18 feet, so I use 2 - 10 foot strings & run the balance up the sides. I'm really techno-minded in my hanging method. I use wooden spring-type clothes pins!! I know there are doo-dad's out there specifically for hanging strings of lights from your awnings, but I always carry clothes pins. They're there, so that's what I use!!

Another vote for using Christmas lights year round when we camp. I use the big ones and zip-tie them around our EZ-up. This provides more than enough light for our campsite.

Every time we think about trying the Fort, we get stymied by how upscale it sounds. We're used to camping being a private spot in the woods that you have to carry your water into.

DW and I were commenting that some of these campers have missed the boat since some of these setups are simply the "mine is bigger than yours". We passed a tent site last night that had like three strings of lights tastefully done and we said now at least they gave it a shot. We're like three sites down from that guy with all the lights/displays in the 1600 loop with the animated Santa, etc. and quite frankly it's just silly and is clearly someone who has uncontrolled Testosterone issues.

If I want to see lights on steroids I will go to MGM for the Osborne display.

If you plug them in and all the lights in your loop don't dim, you don't have too many lights up!
