Looking over my electricity bill, it shot up $45 this past month. This bill is for just one month, and we were at WDW for 12 of the days. We do not leave lights on while were are out of town either, inside or outside. So, for less than a three week period, we consumed 1,022 KWH. This is for just two people. Heat nor air condition was turned on either. So, this is just for things plugged into outlets.

Is this normal? Are we electricity pigs? We do not leave lights on and we've unplugged pretty much everything that is not in use.

How many KWH do you all consume, and how many people is that for?

We are charged 0.09257 per KWH, is that in the ballpark with what you all get charged?

Thanks.

What changed to make it soot up? Usage or price?

Last month usage was 858 KWH 12 month average is 1227 KWH

Our household of 4 used 941 KWH last month.

Our 12 month average is 1221 KWH.

Our current cost is 0.10542 per KWH.

Make sure that's an actual meter reading and not an estimate.

The only thing that changed is that we are turning on lights earlier in the evening as well as first thing in the morning because of darkness. Nothing else really has changed. I'm going to have to really think if anything else has changed. This is an actual bill too. It has an A not an E next to the meter reading. I'm waiting for the electric company's website to update so I can look at old bills for usage and price per KWH. So, I'll know those answers a little later today hopefully.

It does state on this bill that usage went up 19% since last month. It also says it's up 1% from this time one year ago...lol I guess whatever it is, it begins in November...I'll further investigate.

All I know is that my bill is $279 and we didn't have power for 8 days:scared1:

My friend is still out in Brooklyn. I feel so bad for her and her husband. They lost their cars, their basement flooded and there were fish from the ocean in her basement...ugh, I don't know how they're coping.

What i meant was did your KWH go up or did the price per KWH go up? There also could be an adjustment on the bill also for past estimates. I enter all of my utility bills into a spread sheet so I can monitor them. Here is the electric one.

I am in CT, we havea municpal electric company (the town owns it and our rates are lower than the big CL&P, and we have better service). We get charged 0.1076 for the first 700kWh, and 0.1137 for each kWh above 700. There are also some 'power cost adjustment fees' and 'energy conservation fund' fees ($14 total on my most recent bill)

We have 4 people in our home, 3 of us are home almost 24/7 (DH works at home and runs several laptops and desktops 24/7/365) and we use about 1100-1200 kWh most months.

Check how many actual DAYS were in the billing period. Our billing period varies by a bunch...sometimes the bill is based on 25 days, and other times it is based on as much as 34 days, it depends when the meter readers get to our part of town (and they actually drive around in trucks and never get out, they have some hand held sensor thing they use)

last bill.. 980 KWH 0.067330 per not including the various fees

Delivery Services $87.26
Simplify your life Electricity Supply Services $65.98

total $153.24

31 billing days
6 people.. lots of electronics and such..but we leave nothing plugged in( save major appliances) or on when not home..but since we homeschool we are most of the time.

Wow!! Our KWH are insane compared to yours!

Last month our family of 7 in a 3400 Sq Ft house used 2150 KWH at $0.13500

We were still running the A/C on some days though. We are KWH hogs for sure compared to guys.

As a side not e I just changed Electric providers and brought our cost down to .07800 if we use more than 2000 KWH. Anything less than 2000 KWH is billed at a higher rate (.100000 I think).

adding in the winter it will be more. We dont have central heat in the finished downstairs ( split level) so we run space heaters in the kids rooms part time and full time in the 3 season room we use as a schoolroom.

That does seem high to me. Our use for Nov (meter read on the 15th) was 633 kwh. It'll get higher in the winter because we have electric heat on our second floor and run space heaters in the basement workshop as needed, but our highest bills are 800-some kwh. That's for 5 people, 2 of us home most of the time, 2000ish sq ft house.

I'd look at two things - is that an actual or estimated read, because estimated always seems to be way higher than logic would dictate, and if it is actual, is there a possibility that someone else was tapping into your power while you were gone? That happened to us once while we were gone... Our former next-door neighbors' power was shut off so they ran extension cords to our exterior outlets to get by until they could pay their bill and get service restored. So even though we were gone for 12 days that month and had our heat turned down accordingly our bill was higher than normal.

Just a thought--does your power company "round up" your KWH? Ours does, so even though we don't use the average KWH per household, our KWH consumption is rounded up and we are charged for the higher amount.

Here in rural Alberta Canada we are a family of 4 and the boys are terrible for leaving lights on and we used 1068 kWh. There were 28 days in our billing cycle. We paid 7.369/kWh Nov 1-9 and then it went up to 9.918/Kwh for a total electricity cost of $103.27 for 28 days and with all the misc fees etc our total bill was $194.05

Wait, so you have to pay at least the average per household? That doesn't seem fair - no incentive to use less energy that way at all. Our apartment is small (about 610 sq ft) and we used 114 KWH last month (which is the norm for us), I'd hat to have to pay more just because my neighbours used more. Admittedly, I live in a condo where none of the apartments are huge, so the numbers shouldn't be that high.

We have "time of use" pricing, so there are three different price bands, depending on the time of day and weekend/holiday versus weekday. The monthly bill is usually around $35 (most of it coming from fees and taxes!).

Do you have old appliances? :confused3

My usage for last month was 822. I live in a 950sq ft house and have a huge fridge from the early 80s, and two large window ACs we run all night set on 65. We leave everything plugged in and computers on with no concern about being energy hogs. lol!

my cost is 0.097xxx + taxes. $103 was our last bill.

You might look at the kinds of things that would be hard-wired.

Possible you left a hot water drip/leak on if you have an electric water heater? A drip or leak can use up a shocking amount of hot water and cost plenty
as the water heater refills and continuosly reheats. A drip per second is 200-ish gallons per month.

Do you have a hard-wired well or pool pump that could be running overtime for some reason?

Payment at the end of an averaged bill period?

If you are only 1% more than this time last year I wouldn't be concerned. Likely it is something to do with your heating system (probably a blower on a furnace).
