How many former Catholics here?

A CCD teacher told me that my mom was going to hell because she's not Catholic :rolleyes2 Admittedly, I've never had this confirmed by a priest...I do occasionally remind my mom of where she's headed when she gets on my nerves, though :rotfl:

It's just weird to hear that. The only time I've ever heard that was from a born-again Christian telling the Jewish woman I worked with that she is going to hell because she didn't accept Jesus.

I threw liquid paper at her. :rotfl:

Wow. I have never, ever heard a priest tell me or anyone I know that if you aren't Catholic, you are going to hell!!!

I was raised Catholic. I'm not a very good Catholic, but I have no ill feelings toward the Catholic Church. I may disagree with some of their stances on certain issues, but that's why I'm not a very good Catholic. :rotfl:

Honestly, in this day and age, I've never heard all these horrible experiences with the Catholic Church (outside of the abuse of course, disgusting) until I came on this board! And I'm talking of people in my age group. I'm 32.

Guess I'm lucky.

The incidents I was speaking of took place in the early 1960's. Regardless, right now the Catholic church or any church is just not a part of my life.

I wish you could have heard the sermon about how sinful the Beatles were. The priest that gave it kept screaming BLASPHEMOUS, BLASPHEMOUS!!

Believe me, my imagination isn't good enough to make up that and some of the other stuff that happened in that church during my younger days.

Didn't know your age, sorry. But in the past I've seen posts by people my age about how nuns still beat and berate them. I grew up in a very Catholic area, and that sort of stuff didn't go on anymore. In fact, most of the teachers in the Catholic high schools in my area weren't even nuns!

We're about the same age, and I have to agree with you here. I only ever met one odd-duck nun when I was growing up, and I wouldn't even classify her as abusive...she was just odd and a little off. In my area, the priests were the issue, not the nuns. I thought that nun abuse was from decades past. I'm surprised to hear that other people in their early 30's would have suffered from it. We just didn't really have any nuns around the church, save for that 1.

Any organized religion only serves to divide people. There is good and evil in this world. I believe that we must all strive in all moments of the day to choose good, and act on it.

I was raised Catholic but not strict. Married a Catholic, who was raised pretty strict, never missed mass on Sundays or Holy Days. My family was the one that was always there on Christmas and Easter and other Sundays thru the year when we felt like it. I guess because of that upbringing I've never been very strong in my faith, but I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. There are a lot of things I don't believe in the Catholic religion nor do I practice, but I don't feel that I need to leave the church because I don't. Why do some people feel they need to leave the church say because they don't believe in confession, then join a new denomination that doesn't practice confession. I guess I feel we are all God's people does he really distinguish between those that follow their religion to the T, and those who don't? Will I go to Heaven because I'm Catholic and practice all the sacraments? What about those who aren't Catholic what happens to them? I do have 3 kids and they all go to church and two have made their 1st communions, the other is too young. I will be happy no matter what church they go to as long as they go to church. Everyone has to do what is comfortable for them.

I was raised in the Catholic church, and practiced Catholicism until the age of 23. Since that time (I'm now 37) I've been worshipping at one form or other of the Church or Christ (traditional and not so traditional...).

Raised catholic, but as soon as I was able to form my own thought and start to question I did.... and those questions were not received very well at all.

I haven't practiced the catholic religon in 20 years.

As a Presbyterian -I feel I should speak up. They are pretty different! We don't have male celebate priests. (We have male and female non celebate inside of marriage). We don't have a head of the church. We have birth control, We don't do saints -except to discuss them in a historical perspective. I could go on and on.....

The service may be pretty similar -is that what you mean? We like liturgy for the most part and kind of have a "high church" feel. I really like that. :)
I find ritual comforting.
Finding this interesting...thanks!

i think you're onto something here. i do wonder if all faiths originate from the same God but with different prophets.

And i did hear growing up Catholic that non Catholics would go to hell (this was the late 70s into 80s). I really had trouble believeing in a God that would let my friends who were Jewish go to hell.
