I am from Michigan and still currently live in MI (to my dismay). We have just bought into DVC because we love Disney and just FL in general. I really want to move to FL soon, but we just don't have the means right now, but what I was thinking was how many people who own DVC live in FL? I would love to hear from you. Also, if you have any tips for someone who would like to move down to the greater Orlando area, they would be much appreciated, like good neighborhoods or cities to check out homes in. Thanks so much!

When we bought into DVC over 11 years ago, we lived in Upstate NY--Saratoga Springs, ironically!

After we moved to FL about 8 years ago, I tried to convince DW to sell DVC. She would not hear of it.

Even though our DD's are now 11 & 10, we still find ourselves going to OKW for a few days two or three times per year.

We're in Melbourne, on the East Coast, 60 or so miles from WDW, and would NOT live in/around Orlando.

Just what works for us!

I moved here to get away from the snow and cold in Chicago and couldn't be happier. I utilized the FL resident discounts at Disney for years and wasn't aware of DVC until last summer.

I know, if I was in the parks so much how could I miss it? I guess I just had blinders on to sales pitches like other vacation clubs do, so I passed right by.

My DW and I purchased during a trip last August and we have already been there on points 4 times, and currently have 4 more scheduled. Its great that we are about 2.5 hours away, because while its close enough to make a 3 day trip its still far enough to seem like a vacation!

Of course our two DDs don't mind more trips to see the Mouse either.... :yay:

As someone who traveled a lot for work I agree that the Orlando area is not a place I would choose to live, but you can find some nice areas within a 2 or 3 hour drive in different directions!

I moved to FL 4 years ago. We mostly use our points for the member cruises but have done some wdw stays.

As for living in the Orlando area: I live 40 minutes away. If you have children you want to make sure you are in an A rated school area. Lake Mary, Longwood and Winter Springs are nice areas where I live.

It's funny this came up now. I am headed down to Florida in September to look into buying a home somewhere between Tampa and Lakeland. Of course, I am lucky enough that I can transfer my job down there from New York. Can anybody suggest a "nice" (subjective term, I know) area to live somewhere within that area?

ALso, BTW, if we move down there like we want, we will NOT sell our DVC points. STill want to be able to take those 3-4 day weekends like previous poster said!

I've lived in FL for almost 22 years now, and bought dvc just over 11 years ago. It's a 3-hour drive, so I ended up buying more & more points since it's so easy to go for long weekends (4-5 nights).

I had the opportunity to transfer to Orlando about 8-10 years ago, looked into it, and said NO WAY. Why on earth would I live in Florida and live inland??? Florida is about beaches, and I'm much happier living right on the coast. I have 2 beaches - one 2 miles and 1 about 5 miles from my driveway, and loads of restaurants where you eat on the water. Living in the Orlando area has NO appeal to me whatsoever. The traffic is terrible, crime is bad, and who wants to live/work in an area inundated by tourists?? We have our tourist season down here from Jan-Easter, but the rest of the year it's just us locals for the most part. In Orlando you've got the "dumb" and sometimes demanding tourists all year long.

We live about 2 hours from Disney on the Gulf Coast. We moved here in 92 and have never regretted it. We bought DVC about 9 years ago and have been very happy

This was one of the areas we were interested in. We were also looking south of Lake Buena Vista/Orlando around the Winter Haven/Lakeland area. Does anyone know anything about that area? But I am open to suggestions of other nice places to live.

My parents think I am crazy for wanting to move down there, but I really love FL. Something about being down there just makes me happy. You guys are so lucky to live down there, but I do have another question. How do you deal with hurricane season? Are the houses built to withstand them? Are the insurance rates insane? That's pretty much my only apprehension with moving down there. (OK and maybe the huge bugs  ) Thanks for all your advice everyone!!!

Yes, homeowner insurance is very expensive. Few, if any, of the major insurers, State Farm, Allstate, Travelers, etc will write a new policy anywhere in Florida. Most new policies are issued buy the state owned insurer of last resort, Citizen's Insurance.

I'm within 1-1/2 miles of the Gulf of Mexico. Allstate dropped me after the 2004 hurricane season even though I never filed a claim in 20+ years with them insuring this home. Recently my policy was pulled from Citizens and picked up by a new, start-up insurance company. This year's policy runs a little over $2400 for about $200k placement cost. To add insult to injury most companies do not accept monthly payments. Most want 1/2 at the start of the policy year and the balance 3-4 months after the initial payment.

I'm sure that rates are less expensive for inland counties and for homes built after the 2004-2005 hurricanes, but they are still not cheap.

The state relies too heavily on sales taxes for its revenue (there is no personal income tax here). When times get tough people cut back on spending and the revenue stream starts to run dry. I'm a state employee and we've had no wage increases in 3 of the last 5 years, in large part because of the state's budget problems. In addition, Florida's job market is not too healthy. I think I read the we lead the nation in unemployment.

On the positive side (for new transplants) house prices are falling and predicted to continue dropping at least through 2008. Homes on my street that sold for 350-400k in 2006 are now on the market for 200-250k. Also, some inroads are being made to reduce property tax inequities between new residents and long-time owners.

I've lived in Palm Beach County for 31 years( born and raised on Long Island NY)- been going to WDW since I was 16 years old- met my hubby in florida and we bought DVC in 96- love WDW and love Florida.
