How many days does the average American take off from work per year?

Last year I took all 10 of my vacation days and used maybe 3 personal days. However, 2011 is going to be a bit different. I've already had 3 days off for bereavement and I get 15 days vacation (which I will use).

DH gets (and takes) a lot more time off than I do, but I would say not more than 4 weeks total.

I already gave my answer for me, but what I didn't say was that people who started 2 years earlier than I did are able to get 5 weeks of vacation, and up to 10 payback days, plus 7 sick days and 3 personal days.

If I could have had that, I would have taken a week off every 2 months, and still used all the other days.

And, if we worked holidays we had our choice.... get paid 1.5x salary and a future day off, or get paid 2.5x our daily salary. And if we didn't work a holiday, you got 1x your regular pay.

I get 3 weeks of PTO a year (10 days vacation, 5 days discretionary/sick). I use all of it as we can't carry it from year to year and don't get paid for it if we don't take it. It will come in handy for the 2 week WDW trip I have planned in December . My life is all about vacations!

I use all of the vacation time I am allotted--four weeks a year. I am also allotted additional time off in that my office is closed the week between Christmas and New Years, as well as all of the Monday federal holidays and the state holiday Patriots Day.

Starting this summer I am eligilble for five weeks of vacation per year, but my husband only gets four weeks so I don't know if I will use it or not.

Our sick time is seperate and we can accrue up to 120 days before we start to lose it. I have been maxed out on my sick bank totals for a couple of years, but I don't mind losing sick time--it means I have not been sick very much! Plus it is not worth anything unless you are actually sick--you can't sell it back and you don't get paid for it if you leave.
