How Many Character Meals Is Too Many??? A Sept. 2010 DxDP Report with pics

Great reviews!! I'm totally with you on the clown as well, CREEEEEPYYYYY!! I can't believe those glowing eyes!!! Flying Fish is on our Must Do list, it really looks amazing. Your daughter is such a cutie pie!!! You two are adorable together. :goodvibes:goodvibes

Loving your reviews! We loved Tusker House as well and I really loved the experience of eating in the castle at least once.

Thank you for reading! The more Kassidy and I talk about it, the more we can't wait to visit Tusker House again. The castle was lovely, I was really glad we did it, but Tusker house is less than half the price and the food was amazing!

Love your reviews!! I loved the sinful as the day is long statement LOL Loved your daughters dress as well

Why thank you Minnie J! We keep circling one another on different threads, LOL. And that dessert really, really was sinful, I felt like a bad girl every time I took a bite! :rotfl:

Although, I never saw that thing at night with the glowing eyes. If I had I probably would have switched hotels. :rotfl:

Loving your reviews by the way. I wish I could get DH to do that many character meals in one trip.[/QUOTE]

I'm telling you, if I was at the BWV and had to look out my room and see the clown with the glowing eyes, that would be it for me. I swear. I have visions of me trying to sleep and hearing whispers of "They all float down here...." If a balloon was accidently blown out of the hand of a child and wafted past my window, that would be it. I might have a heart attack right there.

Thank you! You will not at all be disappointed in the Flying Fish, it was a fantastic meal with a fantastic margarita!!! (I really cannot say enough about that margarita, LOL.) I hope you have a wonderful time, and STAY AWAY FROM THE CLOWN! :lmao:

I was still kind of stuffed and flying high from our wonderful breakfast when, like clockwork, my daughter was hungry again exactly two hours later. Due to having a couple of meals that were two credits a piece on our DxDP, I was prepared to pay OOP for a counter service meal for lunch that day. I gave Kassidy her choice of places through the Animal Kingdom and she chose Restarauntosaurus in the Dinoland area of the park.

(Side note: What on earth is that area doing in the Animal Kingdom? It doesn't fit with the rest of the park at all. But I digress....)

This was the menu this day:

Since I was paying out of pocket for this one, I ordered Kassidy the chicken nuggets on the adult menu, and I went with the Dig Site salad. Please note, if you plan on stopping here to eat, that the combo meals here do not include drinks, you have to order them separate. They had soft drinks and tea and lemonade.

IMG_0694.jpg

Kass enjoyed her chicken nuggets, but there was no question on that one, LOL, I knew she would. I tried one, it was pretty good. Better than a McDonald's chicken nugget, but a little greasier.

My salad was not great. Not terrible, but not even quite good. Edible at best. It was basicly the same quality as snack stand nachos with added chili from a ball park concession stand.

IMG_0693.jpg

Trust me, it looks much better than it tasted.

There are two dining rooms, one to the left of the ordering station and one to the right. We went left. The dining room was air conditioned, but pretty bland. I was ok with that though, because there wasn't much to look at we didn't linger and hightailed back to Everest to ride twice more.

So, would we eat here again?

Mom: Nope. Not unless every other CS place in the AK was closed and this was the only choice. Next time we'll try Pizzafari or Flame Tree BBQ.

Kassidy: Yeah, I like chicken nuggets.

I had heard it was pretty basic fare there. But I guess the burgers are supposed t obe decent...and the chicken nuggets. But it does look kind of pricey for just basic fare.
I think I would've ordered the Chocolate Mousse and the Cheesecake in a cup though!

They look better than those chicken nuggets at ABC commissary lol Probably taste alot better too :lmao: I tasted salad from pizzasafari(sp?) in AK and I was in love. Very good salad and pizza

I have really enjoyed reading your reviews and seeing your pics! Your daughter is too cute. And after showing my son the Buzz Lightyear light up thingy that was in her drink he has already demanded that I buy him one our first day in the parks LOL

Just found your review and I like it! I usually don't look at the reviews that involve people with kids, so this is hitting a lot of places I haven't been yet. I'm really wanting to try Tusker House now.

I agree about Flying Fish....amazing place!

Thanks for the awesome reviews. We'll be dining at Flying Fish on Christmas Eve. Looking forward to it! We'll also be staying at the Boardwalk, I'm praying that my room does not look anywhere near that clown pool because it will freak me out. I don't know how that is even allowed. hahaha

Worried about our Sci Fi ressies though. We'll also be a party of two at that meal and I have a feeling every car will be seated to capacity. Ah well.

Thanks again, and what an adorable daughter you have!

This is great info! I am loving your pics, stories, and advice. Sorry about the counter service place at AK, Flame Tree and Pizzafari are both really yummy.

What kind of salad specifically? I will keep my out for it in May! :thumbsup2 The husband is a massive pizza fan, he'd eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday if he could, I'm glad to hear the pizza there is good.

Hi! Thanks for reading! LOL, like I said, I decided that everything at Disney is specifically designed to make it so that once your children see other children with something they turn to you and say "Mom! I want one too!!!" Those little glow thingys are no exception. Other kids were begging their parents for them and pouting if they were told no. Best $7 I ever spent in order to avoid a pouty fit, LOL.

Hello and thanks for reading! I'm counting down the days until I can book the Flying Fish again. I have dreams about that margarita, I tried to duplicate it at home but it just wasn't the same. :sad2:

The Tusker House is fantastic. I think it will be the only breakfast reservation that I make next time. Its worth getting up extra early and racing to the park for those cheese blintzes.

Thank you and you're welcome! :) I think Kassidy is pretty adorable, if I do say so myself.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that you don't get a room facing the clown. *shudders* I'm sure that the slide is all sorts of fun, but the exit is too terrifying for me to face. I couldn't relax by the pool with a drink with that thing looming over me, LOL.

I would bet money that if you go during a busy time that you will end up with some back seaters in your car. Hopefully they are fun, interesting people and maybe you can start up a conversation or something. Its definately not the place for an intimate dining experience, but the clips are fun if you like old cheesy movies.

Thanks for hopping on board! I'm really looking forward to trying some new CS in the Animal Kingdom next time.

We left the Animal Kingdom around 3pm and went back to the Poly to relax in the pool. I have absolutely no idea how, but somehow we ended up being late again. We got ourselves showered and dressed all purrrty again, and arrived at the California Grill at 8pm for our 7:50 reservation.

*Note again* Everything at Disney will take longer than you think it will. Always leave at least 15 minutes earlier than you think you need to. More like 30 if you are relying on the bus system.

We were escorted high atop the Contemporary by our hostess, (which Kassidy found to be very fancy, btw), and sat patiently in the bar area to wait for our table.

And we waited. And waited.

This was the longest wait for a table we had. Luckily we had a great bar waitress who was more than happy to get Kassidy a lemonade and myself a glass of wine. ( A $14 glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Now, I love wine. I am a wine-o. But I don't have a sophisticated enough palate that can discern a $14 glass of wine from a $7 one. My husband is a very basic eater so we don't go to upscale restaraunts often. This was the most I have ever paid for a single glass of wine. It was good, but was it worth $14? I don't think so. But I digress...)

We were finally paged to our table, only to approach the host and be turned back to the bar because I still had an open tab. :headache: We waited another 10 minutes to cash out with the waitress, then, finally, we were seated at 8:45.

The dining room was very crowded but didn't feel cramped. The nearest table to us was a couple in their 50's to the left of us, who tried to hide it, but were obviously not excited to have a child seated so close to them. I saw them make a little face. No matter, we kept to ourselves during dinner.

Another side note...I realize that this is a hot ticket ressie for families because of the view for Wishes, I totally get it, because the view was amazing. However, I was really surprised at the number of really young kids, like toddlers and preschoolers in the dining room at that hour. I saw a number of really frazzled parents trying to talk their overtired children into sitting still and not running around all over the bar area.

We had just enough time to order before Wishes began. We were given a yummy basket of sourdough bread, and to my very pleasant surprise, Kassidy was given a plate of Goldfish crackers!

IMG_0722.jpg

She was completely happy with this, she loves Goldfish. She smiled very big when she saw that she had her own plate.

We went outside for Wishes, which was AMAZING! The deck was semi-crowded, but Kassidy could easily see if I picked her up and kind of let her rest against the railing. The view from there is really spectacular, it made me rather envious of the people staying at the Contemporary with a Theme Park View room. Here is the view from the deck, taken on my iPhone.

IMG_0736.jpg

When we returned, our appetizers followed us to our table.

Kassidy had a fruit plate. Its not listed as an app on the children's menu, but our server suggested it when Kassidy mentioned that nothing on there looked that good to her.

IMG_0723.jpg

It was huge! It was also so pretty that I almost hated to let her eat it, LOL. Wonderful presentation, and she probably could have made a meal of this on it's own, it was that big. If you have a picky eater with you for this meal, be sure and request this fruit plate!

I had the crab salad.

IMG_0724.jpg

This was really, really good. It was very light and didn't leave me feeling at all heavy, I was still hungry for dinner. The portion was just right for an appetizer.

I have to give the California Grill very high marks for presentation. The dishes here were the most visually appealing of our trip. Like I said, I almost hated to eat them, they were so beautifully plated.

For our entrees, Kass ordered the kid's salmon and rice.

IMG_0725.jpg

She really surprised me this whole trip, I never expected her to eat the salmon, normally she shies away from fish. She ate most of it.

I had the Florida Black Grouper.

IMG_0726.jpg

It was delicious, but I have to give the flavor edge back to the snapper at the Flying Fish, as far as fish dishes go. The grouper itself was very good, but the bed of corn relish it was on was a little blah.

The highlight of this meal had to have been dessert. :woohoo: Get your salivary glands ready.

Kassidy had the best dessert ever, that I have since had to try and replicate at home. She was treated to the rice krispie treat Sushi plate.

IMG_0732.jpg

I LOVED this, it was so adorable. The rice base is, of course, rice krispie treats. The longer pieces have Sweedish Fish on top of them. The maki rolls are wrapped in fruit roll ups with gummi worms stuffed in the middle. The "soy" sauce is chocolate syrup. The "wasabi" was a green marshmallow and the "ginger" was pink tinted white chocolate. Major, major props for this dessert, it was just delightful to look at. Kassidy liked it too.

IMG_0734.jpg

And for my heavenly blessing of a dessert, I had the carmelized banana dessert. (Can't remember the exact name, but you'll be able to pick it out on the menu immediately.)

IMG_0733.jpg

Oh Lord, this was fantastic. Seriously. I don't know if it's possible to make a reservation at the CG just for dessert, but if you can, I would reccomend you do this. This was so wonderful, I ate every bite. The carmelized bananas kept their texture and weren't at all mushy, and were very crunchy on top. The toffee pieces were very crispy, if you have sensitive teeth skip the crunchies, they may hurt. The carmel mousse was the stuff that fabulous desserts are made of. The whole dish together was really just fantastic. As far as edges go in signature restaraunts, I have to give this round to the CG over the Flying Fish. Dessert was definately better here.

An update from a snippet I mentioned near the top of this post. As we were getting up to leave, the 50ish couple that I mentioned earlier....remember them? They tried to hide their discomfort at having a child seated so close to them? As we were getting up to leave, they stopped me and mentioned that it was amazing that my child was so well behaved and well mannered. They gave me a thumbs up and told me that I must be doing a great job. :thumbsup2

So, now comes the tough question. Would we eat here again?

Mom: I just sighed when I asked myself this question. Yes, I would eat here again, but I don't think that I will make reservations here on our next trip. If I can only go for one 2 TS credit meal, I'm going back to the Flying Fish. Other than the fireworks, I enjoyed the ambiance of the Flying Fish, it just suited us a little better and didn't feel quite as stuffy. Plus, it's way easier to get a reservation there. If we ever get to go again, after our May trip with my husband, I might trade off and use another 2 TS credits here.

Kassidy: Yes, because I like Goldfish crackers.

Great reviews,

That was very interesting with the 50 couple next to you made a face and then make a comment how well behave your daughter was b/c some thing happened to us when we went to Narcoossee's. We took our son when he was 2 and 3 yrs old there (we have been taking our son to restuarants since he was an infant and well behave). We were in the first sitting so I know there would be alot of kids at that time but a couple (I think they were on their honeymoon I guess wanted a very romantic dinner was seated next to us and in back of them another table with 2 kids about 8 and 10). My husband and I talk to our son and keep him entertain or he entertain himself with coloring and watching the monorail and boats go by (he knows indoor voice and knows the dinner behavior) but not the 2 olders boys...they were yelling and running and going under the table. When we finished and walked by...the couple said we didn't even know there was a toddler next to us b/c he was so well behave and so quited. We said thank and went on our way.
