How long will Poly be offered direct?

I am planning a May 2017 trip to WDW. As of right now, our plan was to rent points. We went on a dvc tour during our first trip to the world in 09 and loved the idea of dvc but already owned a timeshare so it wasn't financially possible. Side note, we bought that timeshare because it traded into Disney but when dvc switched to RCI we were screwed. Anyway, we are now in a better financial position to own DVC, so I'm curious how long Poly will be available to buy direct? I'm also curious if it would be possible or even make sense to try to get this transaction completed and be able to use our own points before next May or if we should just wait until we're down there to buy?

The not-helpful-but-true answer: Until they sell 98% of the points.

The timeline on that is anyone's guess, but it is hard to believe they will sell out before mid-2017, or even late-2017 based on rate of sale to date.

If you bought soon, direct, there is no reason you wouldn't be booking at 11 months in June. However, have you stayed Poly DVC before? I wouldn't advise buying somewhere you have not stayed, pretty much ever.

We have not stayed at Poly DVC before. We do LOVE the resort though. That is great advice that I will definitely consider. Thank you!

If you are going to buy at some point, there would be a financial benefit to doing it prior to your trip.

If you were going to rent a studio its about $400 a night after discounts. If you want a 2br, its gonna be about $s1k a night after discounts. If youre staying for a week, thats somewhere between 3 and 7k. If you put that money towards a purchase of 150ish points for a weekly studio (150*$171 per point = 25650) or 350 points for a 2br (350*$171 per point= 59850) you have an 11/12 percent jump on those purchase prices.
If you book your room cash you end up paying for both.

If you buy resale though, you can pretty easily cut those purchase prices in half and doing it prior to your trip makes up an even bigger chunk of the purchase price

IMO the toughest thing is really knowing which resort is your favorite. Nothing worse than buying a resort and in a couple of years after staying at other resorts, finding that you dislike your home resort. Been there done that!

After looking at the DVC rooms online and the lack of any bigger rooms, I decided against Poly. Thank ya'll for the advice! Currently have an offer in on an AKL resale. We have rented points before to stay at AKL and we LOVED it!

If your plans include 2BRs on any regular basis, as in one of the prior examples, Poly direct is probably a poor fit.

Poly is a niche resort, offered at a premium. The premium is not of value if the 11-month priority is not in regular use, IMO.

Assuming you continue with your rental plan...what is your plan for your next trip? When is it, where will you stay, etc, etc, etc? Makes a huge difference.

You asked "How long will Poly be offered direct?" Why did you phrase it that way?
  • Do you HAVE to buy direct?
  • Why?

The only reason I can see for buying DVC direct at any resort is
  • You have to have it right NOW -- which is a falsehood. You don't need to have ANYthing right NOW!
    • (Except oxygen and glucose, but that's another topic.)
  • AND...it's a brand new resort, so there is no resale.
Frankly, if that were my predicament...I wouldn't buy at all. Buying direct because one has to in order to get financing is the worst reason I can think of. Buying direct because you have to have it right now and there is currently no resale is a close second.

I would certainly never recommend anyone buy DVC or any other timeshare influenced by their next trip. And if the trip after this one is a year or more away, there will be Poly resale contracts available which will save you some money.

And...as Aurora noted above, if you want 2BRs, Poly is probably not a great choice to begin with.

You made one timeshare mistake buying a timeshare for its exchange capabilities -- which, not surprisingly, changed. Don't make another timeshare mistake buying a different timeshare for the wrong reasons.
