How long have these 'codes' been around?

Anyone know how long Disney has been offering codes like this to the general public? I know people that go every year and this is the first year we found out about them. I was curious as to how long my friends and I have been paying too much. I have only been once in the last 5 years, so it's not too bad for me. Thanks for any input.

There have usually been discounts for Disney Club (Magic Kingdom Club) members and Annual Pass holders, but these code discounts have been popular within the last two years. Prior to that time, Disney offered some specials (especially during the summer) but those promotions usually had a name and you didn't have to have a code to book the discount. I think Disney started the codes to try and monitor their marketing expenditures, but with the Internet this is difficult. A code put in the newspaper in New York can be posted to the Internet and, if it has no restrictions, can be used by someone in Los Angeles.
