How long is the drive "in the real world" - how early do you set off to make a 9 am rope drop for example, or how long does it take to drive back at night? thanks.

I used a towncar service to get from PBH to Disey's Boardwalk Inn. It took about 20-25 minutes.

You're relying on I-4 for this drive, so you'd do well to build in extra time. I would suggest leaving the hotel about 45-60 minutes before you want to arrive. If you're talking morning or evening rush hour, I'd increase that to 60-90 minutes. I-4 is always a pain, but it seems lately it's been much worse. I'm finding it congested more and more frequently. If you're going to down to Disney property from Universal on a Fri or Sat night, then leave yourself LOTS of time - the past month or so, Fri or Sat bet 4 and 7 pm going west bound has been bumper to bumper traffic.

In a perfect world, the trip is about 30 minutes, but I-4 doesn't exist in a perfect world (take it from a local who's ready to vote out the mayor because he hasn't kept his promise about fixing this issue).

if you want to do the rope drop at disney, leave before rush hour if you go down I-4. when i go from one hotel to another park, i leave around 7:00 to avoid lots of traffic jams.

you don't want to miss the rope drop at disney, so leave early. better early than late.

also consider the time it will take to park your car in the lots.

have fun, those opening ceremonies are kewl

I thought I had seen postings that there was a back route you could use to avoid I-4 & some traffic. Does anyone know of this?

there is another way that locals use and they miss out on the traffic.
for the tourists like myself who do the motherland and darkside yearly, it's too confusing........yea, i'm blonde

i stick with the main routes. they take longer but i know the disney turn off and where to go.

local roads from Universal to Disney are rather easy.

Sand Lake Rd West to Apopka-Vineyard Rd. then south to WDW DTD entrance.

my GPS says its 5 min further drive than Kirkman to I-4 to whatever exit.

The other problem is there are cops with radar guns on the back roads. Good job, ticket tourists and put more people on I-4, but that's the way it goes.
So like the others said, just get up early, take Kirkman to I-4 at 07:00am, and follow the signs. The lines to get into a Disney park actually start around 08:00am. They let people in around 08:45am, everyone lines up at the rope, and then at 09:00am they walk to a thrill ride. The sooner you show up, the closer you are to the front of the rope.

The thing about the real world, is you'll forget something at the hotel and have to go back, or you'll miss a turn, or there will be traffic. So leaving early is always a good idea.
