I know that sounds crazy, but I think I have decided to plant a hedge to solve my fence problem with the neighbors. Does anyone know how long it would take new red tips to grow up enough to form a border? Also, any suggestions for a fast growing hedge type plant other than red tips is welcome. Thanks!

I know in my area red tips are prone to disease. For a living wall, you could try leyland cyprus. These are very fast growing evergreens and are frequently used as screen barriers.

If you want the look of the red tips, you could also try cleyera japonica. We had these planted in front of our house and they got out of control. They required year-round trimming and got tall and wide. We ended up cutting them out when they covered our dining room windows. Realized we cut the dickens out of these plants, but they were over 5 feet tall in about 6 years even with severe pruning.

Just a warning if you plant the leyland cyprus: make sure you are several feet within your property line. My neighbor planted a line of these and they have overtaken my yard. They are pretty trees, but I would like to be able to walk down my side yard without having branches slap my face. The leylands grow very quickly and may be something you want to investigate. My neighbor's are over 20 feet tall and have been planted about 8-9 years. They were 2-3 feet tall when planted.

In our area the redtips get a disease (a type of mold?) and die off. You need to see if it's a problem in your part of NC.

My landscaper planted some wonderful fast growing thing along my back fence for privacy....I'll look at it tomorrow and see what it's called.

Our neighbors have a row red tips across their front yard. They've been in that house 10 yrs, and I'd say they're easily 15 ft tall. Probably by year 4-5, they were about 5-6 ft tall.

I'll be the oddball, and say that Leyland Cypress around here grow for about 4 years and then die! Our developer put them at the front of the neighborhood, and several people within the hood put them in their yards. When the ones at the front died (there's about a 200 ft approach into the neighborhood, before the first lot), the association paid a tree company to remove, then stump grind. Lots of work and $$

Thanks for the response. dis-happy, I would really appreciate knowing what you used.
