after you've been on Ammoxicilin (didn't spell that right)?

Learned I have strep on Thursday night, started my Ammoxicilin then, and I still feel like dying! I'm taking a pill every 12 hours.

My throat started hurting on Monday, went to the Dr. on Tuesday, that strep test came back negative. I went back on Thursday when I still felt miserable.

I'll go back to Nighttime if I have to but I really hate that place...pretty sure that's how I came down with Pink Eye on Friday :sad2:

For me it was at least 5 days before I started heading in the right direction. I have a miserable time with strep :(

ETA: Feel better soon!

The meds take care of the infection, but the irritation to the throat needs rest and plenty of your favorite ice cream. :thumbsup2

Without a steroid shot, it takes me about one and half to two weeks to feel better after having strep/throat infections. With a steroid shot, I feel better in about two days.

I am in the minority then because when I had strep I was feeling relief by the next day after starting a Z Pack. Not sure if that is a stronger antibiotic or what, but I had strep 3 times in one year and always felt a bit better the following day.

My children had strep back in February. I tested negative, but since all 4 kids had it and I had the symptoms (throat wasn't sore, yet), I was put on antibiotics as a precaution.

Their moods improved after 24 hours. My one child who first had the sore throat (and the only one with it) had improvement on that symptom after 24 hours. We took the whole week off though and by Monday we were good to go.

I would say if you feel you are getting worse, it either is not a bacterial infection OR it is and the meds you have just are not working.

All of my children had amoxicillin. I am allergic to that and was placed on another med.

Even when I had other bacterial throat infections, I felt improvement after 24 hours (razor blade/broken glass sensation when swallowing was gone even if throat might have been tender).

Did you actually have a positive test on Thursday, or did the doctor just decide that it was strep from your symptoms? I would think that you should be feeling at least a bit better after three days of antibiotics; if not, then the bacteria may be resistant the amoxicillin (which is supposedly rare for strep), or it's viral. Have you had mononucleosis?

I did test positive for the rapid strep test on Thursday. I've never had mono; is a sore throat a symptom of that?

My sympathies. I had a horrible strep throat that was coupled with mono. once--had to go back to the dr. for a refill of my antibiotics after 1 week. You may have to get a refill of your antibiotics, or have the prescription switched to another antibiotic. My sore throat took a couple of weeks to become bearable--I lost about 20 lbs. as a result, and survived for about 3 weeks on a diet of vanilla milkshakes, jello, Bird's custard, and warm tea with honey.

As to the strep throat--one of the symptoms is swollen glands, you can also have a sore throat. Not sure how mono. is diagnosed these days--I had to wait a couple of days my test results to come back.

I had a horrible throat infection this winter and I was feeling better about 36 hours after starting the z pack. It did take me about two weeks to get my voice back, but I work in Customer Service and am on the phone for 8 hrs a day.

Have you tried Chloraseptic or something like it for the pain? I'm sorry. Feel better. :goodvibes

Call your doctor and ask for a new prescription. Don't believe the "it takes 5 days for the antibiotic to work" crap either. If it's the right antibiotic, it doesn't take that long to work. It should stop hurting withing 24-48 hours of taking the first pill. Sometimes sooner.

First, let me say, I hope you feel better soon. I had a bout with strep about five years ago and it was horrible (I felt like I was swallowing shards of glass-and I mean that literally).

It took 2 1/2 weeks for me to start feeling better. I believe I got a Z-pack in the begining (because I was allergic to penicillin). It wasn't enough to knock out the strep, though. I had to go back about a week later and they had to prescribe an pretty strong antibiotic that wasn't even on my formulary. I'm very sorry, but I don't know what it was called.

It might be time to go back to the doctor and see if they can prescribe something else.

I hope you start feeling better-I remember how miserable I was and I really wouldn't wish that upon anyone.
