I just read on another thread that some think the low point buy-in will only last for a few more days. I'm not sure we are quite ready in the next few days to buy in. Anyone think this offer will last longer? We'll be going back to Disney World in October. Should we take the tour to get more info? We may be able to buy at that time. Any thoughts?

Never rush into buying DCL! There will be another deal or opportunity down the road. If Disney isn't offering a low buy-in when you are ready to purchase, there's always the resale market.

Disney has offerred the low point buy in since we bought in late summer of 2008. They don't advertise it much but if you ask, they'll tell you about it. It could be ending... but I've heard that rumor numerous times. You can't do the low point buy in at every resort (it was only AKV when we bought in ) but it's been available pretty consistently.

Good luck! Crossing my fingers that it's still available when you are ready to buy! (though truth be told... we bought in at 160 and it took no time at all for us to catch addonitis... we currently have 310 points...)

Spoke to my guide today and he said he wasn't sure how long it would be offered and could be ended at any time. Of course he also told me that if I bought now (for less than 100 points)through the end of July he could get me 2009 points and double my points for this year. I did wonder why he was so confident he could swing that if he's so unsure about how long the length of the 50 point buy-in option would be;)

Sometimes, when dealing with Disney, I get the feeling the right hand has no idea what the left hand is up to

He's so sure of the "double" points because that's they way it's always been done and isn't a special that would end. As long as you were buying an Aug, Sept, Oct or Dec UY or adding on to one of those UY's you would get 2009 points if you bought today.

Hmmmm.... we closed in Oct. last year so our UY is March and we still got 2009 points as well.

Yes, if that was Oct of 2009 and you had a March UY 2009 was still the current points. That's all it is - when you buy you get current points. At the moment the Feb-Jun UY's have all started their 2010 UY's so 2009 is no longer current or available. Aug-Dec are still in 2009 and would receive 2009 points as long as the purchase is made prior to the start of the 2010 UY. After Aug 1st then only Sept-Dec UY's can get the 2009 points.

It's not a special so the guide can be confident about it - it's just receiving what is current.

Or the right hand doesn't want you to know what the left hand is up to or NOT up to. And sometimes, they just don't know what either hand is doing!

DVC guides (unlike many other timeshare companies) don't usually tell direct lies...but they certainly are selective about which "truths" they tell! And also what percentage of the truth they tell -- sometimes 80-90%...sometimes 50%...sometimes 20%...

I think this is great advice for buying anything. In my opinion you should buy something when you are ready and not when the sale might end or when the last one available might be gone.

Honestly this is why I have been trying to do as much research as possible here as I can. ;)

We tend to think that Disney is different, but in reality they are a business and now more than ever, they are focused on making a profit.

The deals will come and go depending on how well they are meeting their forecast. The Guides will also come and go depending on how they are meeting their quota.

As a result, Disney has been hiring timeshare sales people and contracted sales people who don't always play by the original DVD playbook.

I guess I can't blame them. Tell a white lie and make a sale or tell the truth and loose your job.

Like everything else in life, the educated consumer will usually get the best deal and make the best decisions.

Owning a DVC interest works well for some and not as well for others. Some purchase based on the numbers and others based on emotions. For us it is a way to save some money while vacationing at WDW. When the magic goes away, or the numbers no longer make sense, we will sell and move onto our next interest.

I agree don't make a snap decision. I have been lurking on this board for a year trying to decide and have gotten a lot of valuable info. If I had bought last year I would have spent 24K at a resort I don't even care for that much. You can always buy resale. It is always better to wait and be sure and happy with the end result.

This is important to understand, and a perfect example of timeshare salespersons tactics -- they take nothing and make it sound like something special.

The reality is that they are not "giving" you a thing, but a lot of buyers think they got a "deal."

All they really got is the points they were entitled to in the first place!

Can't agree more with you on that. When buying direct, the deal is the deal for everyone! There is no special deal that only that buyer received at that moment.

But your right, the guides sure know how to unitentionally inform their prospect at that time how good of a deal they are getting!

Educated buyers make the best of the situations!

But Disney complicates matters because they do have several different deals going at the same time. If a person takes a cruise and attends a sales meeting you get one offer, if you do a tour at the Welcome Center you get a different offer, if you tour BLT you get a different offer, and if you call your guide directly you get a different offer again. And your guide cannot match the better deal on the cruise line or the tour office but it stuck with the incentive amounts assigned to guides.

Only thing that is consistent is the base price per point. Okay sometimes that changes, but it changes across the board. It just that the incentives that will reduce that price per point varies. I hate it. My DH thinks it's smart marketing by Disney and gets you to attend the sales meetings. When I call to add on I just want the best incentive out there without all of the Mickey Mousing around. Did I say that? :rotfl:

Let me give a shot at clarifying, whether a cruise line offering, or WDW offering, or off site offering, yes, the incentives may differ but, anyone on that crusie received the same offer, anyone at WDW tour received that same offer. In other words, no buyer / seller bartering. The deal at that time is the deal for all, not like resale.

And yes, I think that is a good thing to know that if you are buying or adding on direct, the offer from them is the best at that given time, no hassle! Or mickey mousing around! Yes, we did say that!

:) To the OP, just continue to read and read here on the DIS. Dh and I purchased last year after I had been reading about DVC here for maybe 4-5 months....I still don't know everything..and I am still reading.

I really wanted to add on last month before the prices went up because I know we will really use the points...but DH wasn't ready and until 2012 we have enough to make the three trips we want. I have watched them (incentives) come and go this last year, but there is ALWAYS something they are doing to market a sale.

Just hold back and wait until you are comfortable with your financing of the purchase. It is very expensive and DVC forces you to spend money on food, transportation and tickets. It will increase your WDW trip costs exponentially.

;)Enjoy DVC resort hopping in October to be sure you are purchasing at the right home resort for you and your family.

Just for my own clarification, is it possible to buy-in at less than the minimum number of points (whatever that might be at the time) if you buy through resale?

We don't go very often. And one of the things that put me off the last time I seriously considered DVC was the idea that I had to commit 20K. But if I can but 50 or so points at the current resale prices, that seems pretty manageable.
